Sure, but once again if a student doesn't want to say that they should not be forced to, or guilted into it.
True, it is sort of a throw back to the grand old days of extreme nationalism.

There's a great line from some paleoconservative that a VAT is currently unfeasible because the Dems know it's regressive and the Republicans know it will fund unlimited government spending, but it will become inevitable once the Republicans realize it's regressive and the Democrats realize it will fund unlimited government spending. :p

Arizona and Nevada get in on the lawsuit fun. Up to 16 states now.

These two make me a little uneasy though to be honest, two governors going over the heads of their AGs with executive orders.

The one that gets me is, I believe, Washington, where the AG went over the head of the governor.

Now I know many states work differently than the feds in as much as the AG is an elected position, but it still seems like the governor is ultimately in charge of the state (the client), and if he doesn't want to pursue the case, then the AG should be bound by (the client's) decision not to litigate.

Also, VAT's suck. That is all.

Re: Obama 10: Rahm it through.....even in the shower.

There isn't a critical mass. All 50 states can bring suit and it won't mean a thing if the Court finds their argument without merit.

course, if 34 states were against it, then in theory a constitutional amendment could be made overruling the legislation. I'm guessing that's what he means by critical mass.

Of course then you have to get those 34 states to agree on what type of amendment to create and it's wording.

I think we should bring back the pledge and corporal punishment and In god we trust. maybe that's the reason for the dismal failure of our school system. ;)

I didn't realize that our city spends more on k-12 school than anything else. our yearly city budget is around $400million (from $200m in 2002) and school budget is around $800million *or maybe $600m*. And yet our graduation levels hasn't improved an iota or testing for that matter. and the city is in Debt $1.3Billion (60% of these bonds were for school projects).

Most of the teachers/school board seems stuck on less student/teacher ratio from 30/1 to 20/1 ... how about doing some tests with one school and 20/1 ratio and see if it makes a noticeable difference instead of just blaming everything on the student/teacher ratio.

Maybe some butt paddling and whipping will shape these future leaders into shape. or fear of god and country.

That was desegregation and letting women in.

If you're looking for a reason for the dismal failure of your school system, just realize that it is run by the government.

Welcome to the real world, isn't that true in every town across the US? Its almost 70% of my towns budget

No, Bill......it's because the schools don't have enough MONEY. Don't you know that's always the reason(s) for the failure(s) of government program(s)? The culprits are the evil Republicans refusing to throw massive amounts of taxpayer money at the problem. More than doubling educational spending since the 70's has done SO MUCH!

Not exactly government (although laws/regs do effect competition). but more of bureaucracy and failure of teaching methods than anything if you look at the private school numbers too.

Instead of spending more money I would freeze the budget and see if there is any measurable link to performances. I doubt there will be any. I wouldn't mind doing that at the top corporate level too, freeze their pay at 350X regular employee salary and see if corporations fail miserably from lack of pay increases at the top.

It's kinda funny but there were big flaps in the 90's when top executive pay went to 100X from 20x and these guys snuck in stock options with help from congress taxlaws to align the management interest to the shareholders and the pay scale has gone super-nova instead.

I was shocked because our population has increased a bit (15%?) but not by 100% ... but the city and school budget has increased over 100% in the last 7 years or so. mostly due to property value (tax revenue) increase. I don't know where all that money went to .. healthcare costs? pension? wages? administration costs? but it's funny that more money hasn't and doesn't mean better perfomances.

There is a link between money and peformances but at certain point more money doesn't equate to better performance since there is a limit to performance but no-limit to pay.... Ie perfect example would be our top executive compensation.
I doubt paying our school teachers $10million/yr will somehow improve our school graduation levels or test scores.
