Obama 10: Rahm it through.....even in the shower.

Re: Obama 10: Rahm it through.....even in the shower.

Are you responding to a voice in your head or to me? I'm a little confused as my post had nothing to do with more welfare. If anything, I'm calling for scaling back benefits. If the system can only pay 75% of current levels to people like myself 30+ years from now, my idea is simple. Reset it so that the 75% level is the new payout. Not sure what your issue is with that....

That, I have no issues with. When you "means test" SS (as was in your first post) it becomes welfare.

No, it's an insurance policy. I don't get money back from my insurance company if I don't need it and this is the same thing. It's insurance so you can have some money no matter if you go bankrupt or not if you worked in the United States and paid into the system.

It's not welfare.

So, Knucks', remember when you all said the US was going to take a bath on the auto bailout and we should have lost those hundreds of thousands of jobs because they'd all go out of business?

The following is not a joke. This is from an actual Congressional hearing, and the person asking the questions is a member of Congress. Just start watching and make sure that you're listening closely at about the 1:25 mark.

:D This is Hank Johnson. The same guy that said Conservatives all want to join the Klan and terrorize the countryside on horseback (or something) because they voted for McCain.
Now his handlers are trying to get him to say he was making an April Fools joke, and he's refusing to back down from the imminent capsizing of Guam.:D :D

But the insurance in this case is for living past a certain age regardless of wealth. It was sold as you paying a down payment for a future benefit. Not paying for someone else's benefit.

If it is truly insurance against not having enough money then people should (and would) be able to opt out and take the risk on their own.

25% increase over last year? What'd they sell this year - 5 instead of 4? If you really want to hitch your wagon to "the bailouts will make the US automakers perennial powerhouses" argument, don't let me stop you. Just make sure you're using a quick-release harness...

If you allow people to opt out then you're just going to increase the amount of elderly that go on welfare. So, I guess pick your poison. Or just let the elderly go homeless and let them die.

A couple of interesting things here; the same facts generate opposite "news" stories in the Detroit News and CNBC.... and after the death watch of 2009, these sales figures aren't impressive (as you said) except for this: Toyota expects a 40% bump year over year in March? It really surprises me that there are that many new car buyers who are either suicidal or live in a cave.

Re: Obama 10: Rahm it through.....even in the shower.

Then let me out

No. It's the same catch-22 as health insurance. We let you out and then something catastrophic happens (God forbid) and you end up on public assistance.

We could go in circles all day on this. If you're going to have a social safety net you're going to have to have people paying into the system who don't use the social safety net.

Or you're going to have the streets littered with homeless begging for food.

My view is that it should be (and was intended to be) an insurance policy, which requires means testing for any benefit, but it's become an unrealistic national pension plan. We should cut the tax by 2/3, and reserve the funds for the truly needy. The 80% who can get along without it, should do so.

I have no problem with that.

OK, it makes more sense--he holds Cynthia McKinney's old seat. And now that I think about it, I guess this is an improvement

Re: Obama 10: Rahm it through.....even in the shower.

Well, great. Although I agree that Congressman is stupid for saying we'd tip the island over we are going to end up paying millions of dollars for wastewater treatment in Guam due to us moving a lot of military there.
But he said, if that demand is created by DOD "than we would look to DOD to help pay for the impact of forcing GWA to secondary treatment."

Secondary treatment may cost from 200 to 250 million dollars said Sanchez and coming up with those funds will be a key focus of the negotiations over a new settlement agreement with the U.S. EPA.

So, any idea why the buildup in Guam? North Korea? China?
