NWHL Women's Pro League

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

It seems to me after watching the video of Engstrom hitting Duggan that this did not just start from "heat of the moment" during this one game. There has to be a history with these two. And what's even more disturbing about this vicious hit...everybody knows Duggan has a history with concussions and this one hit could have ended her career. It is simply not right regardless of whatever their beef is. Have some words, shove each other...whatever. But, cold clocking a player to the head is wrong. IMHO.

Yes, yes, and yes. Well said. This one game slap on the wrist is an embarrassment.

Whitecaps won over Boston on Sunday 5-4. Whitecaps were up 4-0.

almost all of the Whitecaps players from MN? just proves the MN hype is just that.

Where is the team based? It was a two game series between the Whitecaps and Boston Pride thus I'm thinking reporting scores seems reasonable.

syndrome...right. it sounds to me like you're a bit paranoid...
i'm just pointing out how you and all of your MN cronies put your state on such a pedestal for no good reason. you don't participate in Nationals...you have your own tournament...don't play any other teams (u10-u18) outside of MN and try to spread the garbage about how MN girls/women are the best. not to take away from the great players because there are a bunch of great ones...just stating info that directly contradicts your MN bias.

Actually I don't...and in my opinion, same goes for most hockey fans in Minnesota. Even though it may be warranted, which is what really sticks in the craw of Eastern fans. Just pointing that out. It always sounds to me you're a bit angry. What hockey fans in Minnesota do is simply discuss the players we're familiar with. Then read posts from others outside of Minnesota...overwhelmingly from the Eastern US in my opinion who exhibit an irrational hard on for an alleged bias. I guess because Minnesota fans of the sport don't "honor" the players they're unfamiliar with to begin with.

This isn't new. You're pretty much a carbon copy of another goalie dad who polluted the forum with the same neurotic garbage awhile back. Guy from New Jersey whose D played goalie for Princeton.

What is it with goalie dads?

Ice being a noteworthy exception.

i'm not angry. what do I have to be angry about? i'm just pointing out what I see (read)...nothing more. we'll agree to disagree. have a Merry Christmas.

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

Hope you people realize that there's nothing PROFESSIONAL about either of these women's leagues. It's just another extension of girls minor hockey for ex-collegiates. Sorry! :(

Paid to play. Not a lot...but paid nonetheless. Technically that's professional. NWHL that is...not the Whitecaps...that I know of.

$15K for only 18 regular season games comes out to $830 per game. Wish my kids made that much money playing youth hockey.

this is one of the reasons student athletes in canada come to schools in the USA. to get away from people like this guy...and the other is that they must like the USA national anthem better.

if what you are stating were correct what would it matter to you? professional or extension. they get to play.
just so you understand...if a player gets a full scholarship to Wisconsin she's ultimately being paid to go to school, eh? I don't think $60k per year for a 18-22 yr old is anything to shake a stick at. it doesn't matter what you call it. it's money.

is this Don Cherry?

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

I hope they have good insurance since they don't seem to mind players gooning it up.

Yeah, too bad they don't play nice & sweet like the NHL does. The instances of thuggery in the NWHL season would be hard pressed to equal the average NHL game.

"goon" You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

I take offense to this comment. I played on a full scholarship at a great school. And I will say that while I didn't play in the NHL, I sure felt like I was treated like I did. Did I get to sign a big contract after I received a diploma? No, but I came out of school debt free and a great experience. Not many people can say they received both these days. I lived in a luxurious apartment with enough money in my stipend to pay my cell phone bill as well and buy as many groceries as I wanted. I'd consider those 5 years "payment" for getting a great education and playing the game I love. As far as the NWHL is concerned, everything has to start somewhere. So while the top pay is somewhere around 15k for 18 games, it's a start. And, a start is better than nothing. The women in this league are pioneers, making sacrifices to continue playing the game they LOVE and paving the way for the little girls who were just born. How about we show some respect to these women and encourage and support them rather than degrade their efforts to "ex collegiates playing minor hockey".

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

Great post, FanofGoodHockey. Couldn't agree more with everything you've said.

The only caveat - and it's a big one - is that eventually the majority of the teams in this new pro league will at least need to break even financially. And that means drawing enough fans and generating enough revenue to pay the salaries and all the expenses that come with running a professional hockey team. That's assuming the owners are in it for the long haul, because in the short run they are almost certain to lose money. That won't be an issue if the owners are willing to fund their team(s) at a loss indefinitely as benefactors - at least in the short run. But if those people (wealthy owners who have a love for women's hockey and are in it for the long term) don't emerge and continue to support, or if attendance numbers and team revenues don't climb quickly, I'm pessimistic that this league will succeed beyond a few more years. And my doubts of its long-term viability are NOT due to it being women's hockey. There are plenty of examples of men's leagues and teams that have folded in every sport, due to low attendance numbers where revenues do not cover expenses.

Hope I'm wrong, but that's the way I see it.

P.S. If pro women's hockey were to come to Minnesota, I would personally support it. But even in the "State of Hockey" I fear there would not be enough like-minded fans that would do the same. And then, unless another Ridder would come along, its long term viability, even here, would be in doubt.

That's true D2D! One would think Madison might be an even better choice given there is no other professional team there (meaning nhl, nba, wnba, major league baseball). I heard they get 4,000 fans plus for their Badger volleyball team, they draw pretty well for women's hockey and I would bet if they could sign some former players and piggy back off the women's games they might be able to grow a fan base even quicker. Both good choices though! And to be quite honest we need to work with the Canadians because that's all they do is watch hockey. Maybe Barry Melrose should put up the cash he makes just talking hockey, buy a franchise and then he can promote his team and the league every night.
