NWHL Women's Pro League

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

Is that even a suspension in the NHL?

But I get your point, and IMO, it has no place in either league. Set the tone and make that a 6 game suspension, even if it is one-third of the season. That will end it.

I suspect it's not a suspension in the NHL, but this is not the NHL.

Heck, you can drive a defensless players head into the ice causing them permanent paralysis and only get a couple games in the NHL. Dave Forbes removed a guys eye with his stick and hardly got a slap on the wrist. Thats crap that made me lose interest in the men's game - its not hockey. Good for the women for 0 tolerance. When the CTE lawsuit bankrupts the NHL maybe the women's game will get the attention it deserves.

The point is that this doesn't seem like zero tolerance.

that players days are numbered anyway...when the 2015-16 seniors graduate this year and sign the old and marginal players will be flushed out.
what a punk

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

Not condoning it but that was one hell of a short left...Wow...maybe she's in the wrong sport. Seriously.

If you watch just as the clip begins Engstrom knocks Duggan to the ice behind the net. Duggan gets up and skates away and Engstrom follows her and doubles down. Makes you wonder what might have happened prior to the first knock down behind the net. Was the 3 knockdown rule in effect? Duggan is no angel...makes you wonder what prompted Engstrom. And weren't they team mates on team USA? Any history of bad blood?

And the commentator's "observation" was somewhat clueless in my opinion describing the punch as being thrown at an "unsuspecting" Duggan. When something has prompted such action which escalates into a mouthing off tete a tete that begins at less than arm's length you should expect anything...the fight or flight juice should be flowing and your senses should be on high alert. Like the ref always admonishes in the center of the ring before every boxing match..."protect yourself at all times".

Again, not condoning it...hope Duggan is alright but that was one hell of a short punch.

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

Exactly ARM! I'd give her 6 games (1/3rd of season).

And if she does it again then what? Banned for life? This seems like a good start & sets the standard that this sort of s**tuff won't be tolerated while leaving thembigger sanctions for repeat or worse offenses. As others noted this might not even have been a penalty in that other pro league.

And weren't they team mates on team USA? Any history of bad blood?
Our daughter played against girls that had been teammates and those ties sort of disappeared when the sweaters were different. I never saw anything close to this but often ex-mates know better how to get under your skin and emotions take over during the game.

It was only unexpected because it's womens hockey but I have seen the sequence in other games & if you turn to square up with your opponent like that you should be expecting a reaction up to a punch. It's not right but it happens. As for the 'short punch' part, I wish the clip had continued on, I wonder if that was a dive intended to increase the penalty to a 5 or if the refs thought that? Otherwise she might have a future in that other league!

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

I'm on the side of people who don't think this is a big deal. The punishment was appropriate.

If she didn't get knocked out we wouldn't even be having this discussion. You see this exact sequence of events after every other netmouth scrum.

They were squared up for a good few seconds; this was not a punch of an "unsuspecting" opponent.

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

I heard tonight's Whitecaps Boston Pride game is being televised on 45 at 6:00 PM.

Considering how prone the gals are to concussions, that should be a season ending punch. What she did was totally irresponsible as a hockey player.

"the gals"?! Really?! How the heck old are you?? Nobody that has half a clue and respects women's hockey uses that term.

Guaranteed that Duggan provoked the situation - that's what's irresponsible. If you're going to be a sh*t disturber you've got to expect that someone is going to retaliate so you better be ready to protect yourself at all times. She clearly turned and got right in Engstrom's face. Just because they were teammates doesn't mean they liked each other so maybe there was already bad blood between them. Engstrom obviously wasn't going to put up with it and did she ever connect. That's one of the best punches I've seen in a very long time including both genders of hockey players.

You don't see that exact sequence after every net-mouth scrum in women's hockey. There are thousands of "square-ups" every season in the women's game. Plenty of pushing and shoving. But punches like that are rare-to-never in the women's game.

As a point of interest you might want to google some bi-polar bear (UND) brouhahas from 5 or 6 years ago to see what is already on record. Some pretty violent episodes.

wow, talk about emotions getting the best of someone, somebody uses the term "gal" and you blow up and then make this comment

sure, blame the victim

just what is visable from the video:
knocked her down from behind - penalty
cross checks her - penalty
punches her - penalty
yet only two were called

she got off easy with only one game

Re: NWHL Women's Pro League

It seems to me after watching the video of Engstrom hitting Duggan that this did not just start from "heat of the moment" during this one game. There has to be a history with these two. And what's even more disturbing about this vicious hit...everybody knows Duggan has a history with concussions and this one hit could have ended her career. It is simply not right regardless of whatever their beef is. Have some words, shove each other...whatever. But, cold clocking a player to the head is wrong. IMHO.
