Notre Dame to Hockey East

Re: Notre Dame to Hockey East

The schedule would balance better if they stand pat at 11. That way each school would have an even number of conference opponents (10). If you add a twelfth school, you get an unbalanced schedule as you would need to figure out a way to schedule an odd number of opponents (11).

What!?!?! With 11, one isn't playing a league game on any given day. With 12, all can be playing.

Re: Notre Dame to Hockey East

Also, with respect to stability... what if, instead of viewing Hockey East as a waypoint to another hockey destination, ND chose Hockey East in anticipation of landing in the ACC in other sports? Would Hockey East not be the nearest hockey equivalent?

That's my thinking. I used to believe ND to the Integer was inevitable, but now I think the Irish and UConn go to the ACC, Mizzou to the SEC and the Integer and PAC staying at 12 and Texas keeping the Big XII-? viable even if it means bringing back SMU and other old SWC rivals. ND doesn't do things by the seat of their pants; I think this is all part of a bigger picture.

eff the irish...IN ALL SPORTS

Hey, credit where credit is due. ND pulled off a legitimate TV deal for COLLEGE HOCKEY. If you are looking to be angry at someone for the peripherals of that deal, I hear Hockey East is a good target ;)

Balanced against that is with 12/22, someone is going to have to do a home and home with Notre Dame every year to keep it 11 home, 11 away for both schools.

It's not impossible to pair that with a NC game, or forget the NC and just split it across two different weeks. That is done quite often in the ECAC (who has a 12/22 setup already).

so...

not to **** and moan, but http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap...XQeOHw?docId=1934628c359246ef97a656c0fb8df98c

Notre Dame w/NBC is a huge and unfair advantage to that program. B10, Fox Sports or whomever don't have 1/5 the pull of NBC for sports...

eff the irish...IN ALL SPORTS

That article was posted (in one of the numerous threads on this subject) yesterday. What that article fails to point out is that while the contract with ND begins next season, NBC will also have a contract beginning in 2013-14 with Hockey East.

Actually, ND pulled off a great deal for ND and a good deal for Hockey East. Not sure how that helps the rest of college hockey, but I'm sure Commissioner Goddard will be along any minute to tell us why this is a great deal for the LTHC.

Re: Notre Dame to Hockey East

To put a little gambling flavor into the possibility of a 12th team to HE and who it could be I have come up with the following odds.

RPI 3/1 - Seems that they are interested this time. Alot of rumors and where there is this much smoke, there is usually a little fire.

Quinnipiac 4/1 - Upgraded facilities and New England base put them right in the mix.

UConn - 6/1 - Probably the choice for many in New England but arena and Title IX could be too large of an obstacle to make the relationship work.

Syracuse 15/1 - Gotta have a team first.

Stay at 11 teams 8/1 - Worked for the CCHA and with 11 teams. Would 14 non-league games be too many? Odd team might be left without anyone to play on weekends after the new year.

The field 20/1 - Stranger things have happened, especially in the last 4 months.

How many of those splits involve flights? And you're seriously underestimating the distance between hockey schools out west. Western's 75 miles away, MSU is 150, UM 165, BGSU 165, Miami 170 and Ferris 235.

120/1 - the world ends before an announcement can be made.

Agreed. The Notre Dame Hockey Conference will benefit tremendously from this. :p:D:D

Sorry, what I meant was it's impressive that they have a deal for a college hockey team. It does nothing for the sport as a whole.

But the NCHC will find a way to spin it, no worries :)

I haven't seen any indication that the ACC is interested in UConn, but I suppose if they added ND, they wouldn't care one bit who #16 is.

The contract starts this year, VS is showing this year's HE championships as well as a few regular seasons games.

Where are you getting that the HEA championships are on Versus this year? There's nothing on the HEA website.

Re: Notre Dame to Hockey East

I'm not sure why people are so hot to trot with RPI in Hockey East. There's really no good reason for it. Its a mid level EZAC school with limited resources to compete with the likes of ND, BU, BC, and even UNH. Its going to be worse when they have to play a HE schedule. IMHO they're far better off playing in a conference with similar schools so I don't see the point of them changing conferences. Do we really want another Merrimac?

My preference is either a committed to hockey UConn team or an 11 team conference. Keep the top 8 making the tourament format. UConn has natural rivalries with existing conference schools and the resources to compete if they decide to. Unless Red Cloud has $100M lying around (and if he did I suspect he'd be a lot less grouchy) to donate to the program they're just going to be fodder for the better teams.

Re: Notre Dame to Hockey East

Merrimac's arena is wonderful compared to what UConn has - basically a closed in outdoor prep school rink with zero ships.

The only problem with an 11 team conference, IMO, is the unbalanced schedule... unless we go to either a 20 game or 30 game (yikes) conference schedule.
