Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

...Oh, and the academics comes first in the big ten. If it was about athletics first it would look a lot different.....

ROFL!!!!!!! This is legitimately the funniest thing I have read on uscho.com, ever. So I guess Jim Delany personifies the all that is good and virtuous in Power-5 intercollegiate athletics.

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Except the chancellors are the ones who vote on it, not the athletic departments. They aren't going to tarnish the brand as an academic research powerhouse by bringing in a sub-par research institution.

Oh, like Notre Dame?

edit: the other way to spin this is to say then its clear the stalwart college presidents are more than willing to bend to the athletic dollar perverting their own vaunted group.

Ok. Laugh all you want, but it's the way it works. Delaney doesn't decide who gets in the Big Ten. The schools do.

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Because you want them to... Not because they do

I don't care. But there's a reason that the Big Ten has been overtly pursing them for decades. Their athletic department is sort of holding them back academically. At least for major research opportunities. Though they do hold their own at around $121 million in research expenditures. Which is about $40 million less than the lowest Big Ten/CIC member, Indiana.

Like I've been saying though, Notre Dame doesn't tarnish the brand of either the CIC or the athletic conference. That's the key factor. You need both. UConn may be right up there with Notre Dame academically, but it doesn't carry the same weight athletically. And by athletically, I mean football.

I just hope Hockey East has a little common sense about this and either brings in a 12th team that fits the league or just stays at 11. Staying at 11 and having the last 3 teams miss the playoffs would be my preference. Let's make the regular season worth playing again.

Absolutely agree!

I would love to hear an explanation of how athletics is hindering their ability to attract DoE, DoD, NSF, NIH grants. Enlighten me

I don't know if this has been discussed, but on USCHO Live, they were speculating that maybe UNO get affiliate membership in the B1G, and then Arizona State would then join the NCHC. Which makes some sense, at least more sense than ASU joining the B1G.

If UNO left, I'd like to see the NCHC go pick off Mankato State from the WCHA and the leave ASU to the WCHA. Picking up Mankato would be a much better deal for the majority of the NCHC, both in travel costs and tournament attendance - assuming the three-league tournament never comes to pass.

Agreed on FB, although the last time UConn and Notre Dame played in FB, UConn won. ;)

Quinnipiac to Hockey East and Holy Cross to the ECAC. Easy peezee.

But RIT will also have a good shot at the ECAC.

You can't put both Alaska schools and ASU in the same conference. The pain has to be shared at least a little but.
