Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

How stupid do you have to be to try to pull that off? 0.1 blood alcohol won't account for that.
That was my thought as well. If he'd been at 0.2 or higher, well, okay. But at 0.1, you really just feel a little tipsy and happy - not that I'm saying you'd in any way be safe to drive (or ride in the back of a pickup!), but if you had sound judgment about whether to fight a cop to begin with, then 0.1 wouldn't interfere with that.

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

McAlarney's suspension (for a semester, not a whole year) was not about being arrested, it was about being arrested for a drug offense (edit: and I don't think he would have been suspended for more than a few games if it were solely up to the basketball coaching staff).

Yeah, I forgot he was here the first half of that season. But my main point was the arrest itself was without incident and IIRC the officer involved commented that McAlarney was cooperative and friendly throughout the experience. Since Palmieri wasn't he stands to be in much hotter water. And I was always under the impression that had it been up to Brey, McAlarney may have missed no time at all, or perhaps served a token suspension.

My point was that the magic word "marijuana" created an automatic escalation in McAlarney's case which makes it apples and oranges to compare to Palmieri's. It's impossible for me to say how they place alcohol+resisting relative to drugs; I know they take the latter very, very seriously.

So the Big East Football coaches might try to pass an ultimatum on Notre Dame to either join for football or leave for all sports. http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/21870/coaches-want-notre-dame-ultimatum

If this moves pushes Notre Dame into the Big 10 and possibly create the Big 10 hockey conference will Notre Dame hockey fans like this?

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

I don't see how the coaches pull any weight here. Furthermore, the only way anything of the sort goes anywhere is if the ADs from the non-football schools get on board. (And the only way that happens is if they think that the Integer would take ND and ND only if the Big East were to kick ND out.)

If it comes to pass that ND has to approach a conference in order to give the non-football sports a home, my preference would be the ACC.

Anders Lee named series MVP as Green Bay wins the Clark Cup. He totaled 22 points and was a +10 over the 12 USHL playoff games. The Gamblers came back from an 0-2 hole to win the final series in five games. We could use some of that attitude in South Bend going forward.

I don't know if ND has announced their schedule yet, but this year's Shillelagh Tournament will be Notre Dame, Boston U, Minnesota State, and Brown.

Notre Dame, perhaps in keeping with their overall arrogance, seems to always wait until just about the last possible minute to announce their "official" schedule, although I believe this is the lineup we were expecting.

On the recruit front, something we haven't seen a lot of around here is local talent skating for the Irish. Well, as the team continues pushing towards what looks to be a complete turnover, especially along the blueline, a local boy has made good. Jared Beers, a Mishawaka native, will join the Fighting Irish this fall. I swear to God it seems as if he is the 20th player to announce he is coming to Notre Dame in the fall. Of course we are likely to have room for two additional players at the start of the season, and one spot for the whole year.

Speaking of that, Kyle Palmieri had his day in court today.

Hopefully Windsor doesn't push so hard for Stephen Johns that a third slot opens up...

NHR (but ND sports related)

NHR (but ND sports related)

Irish lacrosse team pulled out a nice win (one might call it an upset) in the first round of the NCAA tourny, beating a good Princeton team today 8 to 5. I saw the Irish play OSU last year in their league tournament final, and they were quite good (beat the snot out of the Buckeyes last year). I beleive they were upset in the first round of the NCAA tourny last year, so hopefully they have a nice run this year. Cornell next weekend in the quarter finals, which should be a great game. Exciting to see midwestern teams doing well in lacrosse. I would love to see the sport grow in this region as much as hockey has over the past decade or so.

If he goes to the USHL this is likely a numbers situation like Luke Lucyk faced 4 years ago. Every single player on the roster skated or played in at least 3 games last season and that's one of the reasons Murphy managed to get into 17 of them. His total of 17 often included games in which he skated just 4 or 5 shifts. there are at least 9 roster spots open to newcomers (probably 10), many of whom are expected to make an immediate impact. This team is going to look completely different than the one that slept through their final weekend in Columbus (thank God) and will probably be dressing the most inexperienced group of skaters in Division 1. If the right leaders haven't been identified already, last year will seem like a walk in the park.

By the way, former Notre Dame volunteer assistant coach Jim Montgomery is the head coach/GM of the Dubuque USHL entry.

Amazing run by the Irish. Too bad Rodgers (goalie) is a senior... if he had any eligibility left I'd put skates on him and stick him in goal for Jackson's team... Phenomenal. :D

For those of you who missed Coach Jackson's radio interview, some highlights included his humorous dig when Darin Pritchett asked if he's safe for another year on the radio. Jackson told him sure...if he didn't get into trouble off the ice. ;)

I took a stab a few weeks ago and thought 11 would be coming in and that number was confirmed in the interview. Jared Beers, Shayne Taker, Jared Tinordi, Stephen Johns, Steve Summerhays, Joe Rogers, Mike Voran, Anders Lee, David Gerths, Jeff Costello and...

Will the 11th be Bryan Rust or Garrett Peterson? Pritchett mentioned Rust coming this fall (MLive.com thought Rust would be here last season), but when Peterson committed, it was reported that he was coming in 2010. Peterson would be 19 years old to start the season. Rust just turned 18.

The fly on the wall also told me that if Palmieri and Sheahan (and, really, is there even an "if" there where Palmieri is concerned?) aren't here come October, not to be surprised if another player is gone. I had my suspicions that it was a certain goalie and this interview reinforced those suspicions that Brad Phillips is no longer with the team. I think anyone who can read between the lines could've figured that one out without my typing it here...

So...we can now start discussions about the mystery 11th player or who might wear letters on their sweaters (given that we have a blank slate there), or what the rest of the season's schedule will look like (I have a quarter of the schedule inked, the rest pencilled).

18 weeks til the first game.

Speaking of 18 weeks away, the Ice Breaker Tourney in St Louis, will be Notre Dame vs Holy Cross at 6 pm on Friday October 8th, then at 9pm it will be bucky badger vs bu.

The teams will take Saturday off and the consolation game on Sunday October 10th, will be at 1pm, the Championship game will be a 4pm.

Can't wait.

It's going to be hard enough to get people to show up for these games and it seems to make it all that harder to expect folks to hang around bleeding $$$ for an extra night. Why in the world did anyone think an off day was a good idea? Other than by giving tickets away to as many participants of the massive youth hockey tournament going on in St Louis at the same time, they may be hard pressed to get fans to travel given that they need to book one more night than you would usually expect.

Regarding captains, I think there is a distinct possibility that letters will be affixed to sweaters to comply with NCAA rules and regs regarding on-ice protocol but at least initially, a single permanent Captain may not be chosen by Jackson.
