Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings
Right now everything as far as hockey goes is "on hold" as the coaching staff is participating in the CCHA meetings, which IIRC are in Florida.
For Sheahan's and Palmieri's sakes, this could have turned out much differently. Cincinnati Bengal Chris Henry fell out of a moving pickup while arguing with his girlfriend and died, and he was not drunk. As has been noted, these were kids doing stupid kid things. We've all been there. Many of us have been there drunk as well. But if you choose to do illegal things, be prepared to face the consequences. Ask Kyle McAlarney how much he enjoyed his year away from Notre Dame, and by all accounts his arrest went a whole lot more smoothly than this one. Sheahan will return if he chooses to follow the right path, but all bets are off with Kyle Palmieri.
I made excuses here for Palmieri following his troubles with the NTDP. It was alleged that he was covering for the misdeeds of a teammate, and I applauded the loyalty shown and hoped the troubles he had would aid in the maturation process of a young man.
Sadly, nothing I've seen yet tells me that process has gone very well. He failed to make the transition from star to team player as a freshman. He was benched more than once and was protected from scrutiny by his coach when it happened. Now this?
His alleged actions are incredibly selfish and stupid, and if true he's lucky he's still around to defend himself. South Bend and other area law enforcement agencies have lost an inordinate amount of officers in the line of duty in the last decade or so and have used deadly force on resisting suspects more times than I can count in the last few years. At least twice on suspects who were not even carrying firearms they justifiably (as far as the state was concerned) took lives. Had Palmieri succeeded in getting this officer's stun gun and attempted to use it, it's conceivable this could have turned tragic. My guess is this kid is about one more mistake away from throwing away a whole lot of talent.
