Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

every time I read one of Jackson's quotes regarding Swarbrick and his vision about the new rink it seems to me that it is a poorly camouflaged swipe at Kevin White. I have no idea if that is true, it is just what I read into it with my bias. I do know that shortly before the announcement was made that the project had morphed into a new building as opposed to renovating the north dome Jackson had a "discussion" with the athletic department over a number of issues regarding what had been promised to him, as well as what he in turn was promising recruits he was talking with. Kevin White completely lacked a proactive attitude. Had he not run off to Duke (where I hope he is getting no credit for the first Blue Devil basketball title since 2001 as he deserves none) I believe the rink project would still be a renovation, would possibly not be finalized, we would still be saddled with Weis, and we would be close to losing Jackson. I like this alternative.

Re: ND Hockey faithful insight

Hey there, Irish Hockey fandom. So, there has been some discussion over at tOSU thread(s) about the quest for a new coach. Paul Pooley's name has come up fairly often as a 'possible/hoped for/not a good choice/yeah but he is an OSU alum so it makes perfect sense/he sucked at PC so why would we want him/he's learned from one of the best coaches in the college game - something must have rubbed off' candidate for the head coaching position (depending on who's doing the posting). I'd be interested to hear what folks who have followed him at ND have to say about him. Thanks in advance for your perspective(s).

PS - sorry for the run-on sentence (but not too sorry)

Pooley's an outstanding assistant; I believe he's responsible for the special teams, which have been almost universally excellent. I'm not sure he's cut out to be a head coach, though Armey's performance at PC must also make one question whether that job is even a reasonable one.

Thanks CP. Specifics on why you are not convinced he's cut out to be a head coach? Is it primarily based on his performance at PC? I have heard widely divergent feedback on Pooley's time at Providence. Fans (non-coaches as least) consider him ineffective, while several coaches I spoke with are quite positive about his abilities and are impressed he was able to accomplish what he did there given it was a dinky Christian school with a poor reputation competing for recruits with Harvard, BC, BU, Northeastern, etc.

Based purely on PC fans' dissatisfaction with his performance at PC (not just in terms of results, but also in terms of the way the team played... CF Jon's "dump and watch"). And as I observed, it looks like he hit a high point for the program (subsequent to the mid-'80's), so maybe that's not nearly as indicative as it appeared at the time.

Eeek! Well, so much for my choice of Riley Sheahan as an alternate C next season.

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

Not only is this situation disappointing for the two players involved, it is for the whole team and the direction the the coaches claim the program is moving. Recently Jackson was quoted in Irish Illustrated talking about the sense of entitlement that comes from success. Not that the behavior of two young adults is his fault, but this makes some of the comments a little more difficult to read after the fact.

Often people are initially overcharged upon arrest, and the charges are reduced at some later date, either upon agreement to some sort of plea, or when more facts are gathered and the state only pursues what they know they can obtain a conviction on. But if the circumstances are as the Tribune article alleges, Palmieri wasn't overcharged. He's going to have a hard time when it comes to ResLife. And unless it comes out the police simply fabricated the story out of whole cloth (and they didn't, trust me) you won't see Palmieri in a Notre Dame sweater again.

I can't say this would disappoint me because it wouldn't. If ResLife doesn't throw the book at them (or at least at Palmieri), I hope Coach Jackson does to set a crystal clear example that this crap can't fly with him.

What gripes me is that these "kids" have had to grow up quicker than, say, I did, in my sheltered bedroom community home where going off to college (other than a short visit to Europe, but even that was intensely chaperoned) was my first experience being "grown up." Not only are these kids college athletes, but they are getting "paid" to attend a university that will open doors for them that no other degree can (save for a very few) if their pro careers don't pan out or end earlier than expected.

Okay, so they were underage drinkers. Most everyone I know has had some dabbling in that glass. But to be standing up in the bed of a moving truck, driven by someone who was either also drinking or just plain stupid to allow that...?! What if the truck had to swerve or stop suddenly? Getting thrown out of a moving vehicle with the option of getting hit by another vehicle or smacking your head on the pavement is just plain idiotic.

More selfish antics from the season that apparently won't end.

If you boot one, you've got to boot them both.

I don't think that's the case. There's a big difference between being caught drunk underage (which happens all the time) and being caught drunk underage and then resisting arrest and grabbing the cops taser. How stupid do you have to be to try to pull that off? 0.1 blood alcohol won't account for that.

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

This sort of stuff goes on at many schools for years, but the difference now is that we know about it faster, it shoots around the internet and it suddenly becomes a national story in seconds if ESPN decides to run with it. I've said it before and I'll say it again - when you don the colors of a high profile school in a revenue sport, you are getting huge benefits that other students don't get, and with those benefits comes a personal price tag you must pay --you don't get to do the stupid stuff.

ND and Jackson will come down hard on them as they should.

This off-ice story has appeared on tsn.ca Sports Headlines on the homepage.
Those OHL vulture teams (Guelph - Palmieir and Erie - Sheahan) I'm sure are ready to lure these players to the O now given this situation.

So why does offering the pair a chance to continue playing hockey (assuming they're kicked out of South Bend) make the Storm and Otters "vultures"?

Look - as a former cop, in no way am I condoning Palmieri committing "felony stupid" by going after the officer in his inebriated state.

And as a former accident investigator, I sure as hell am not condoning standing up in the back of the pickup.

However, as JJfP said, we've all been there and done that. If this duo learns a lesson from their youth and alcohol-fueled mistake, let's let them move on - not unlike Patrick Kane.

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

My first reaction to reading this story was 'boy, are those kids lucky' for not being injured or killed. My second reaction was to fall into the trap of condeming them with the 'they must think they are entitled' assumption.

While it may indeed be the case they feel entitiled (for whatever reason), I'm guessing it was simply college kids being college kids (albeit stupid ones). The biggest disappointment is that they did not respect the fact that, like it or not, they are held to a much higher standard than even the rank-and-file students at ND, who are held to higher standards than the average university's students (if my understanding of the expectations for conduct at ND is correct). I have a collegiate athlete son and I hope and pray that he makes smart decisions regarding his behavior and choices. I know my son appreciates the opportunity he has been given - is it enough to convince him to make the right decisions when faced with peer pressure? A parent can hope... As for Kyle and Riley, since they are kids I am inclined to give them a second chance, but keep them on a VERY short leash. I can also understand making very pointed examples of the two. One thing is for sure, I do not envy Coach Jackson his decision on how to respond to the situation.

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

Right now everything as far as hockey goes is "on hold" as the coaching staff is participating in the CCHA meetings, which IIRC are in Florida.

For Sheahan's and Palmieri's sakes, this could have turned out much differently. Cincinnati Bengal Chris Henry fell out of a moving pickup while arguing with his girlfriend and died, and he was not drunk. As has been noted, these were kids doing stupid kid things. We've all been there. Many of us have been there drunk as well. But if you choose to do illegal things, be prepared to face the consequences. Ask Kyle McAlarney how much he enjoyed his year away from Notre Dame, and by all accounts his arrest went a whole lot more smoothly than this one. Sheahan will return if he chooses to follow the right path, but all bets are off with Kyle Palmieri.

I made excuses here for Palmieri following his troubles with the NTDP. It was alleged that he was covering for the misdeeds of a teammate, and I applauded the loyalty shown and hoped the troubles he had would aid in the maturation process of a young man.

Sadly, nothing I've seen yet tells me that process has gone very well. He failed to make the transition from star to team player as a freshman. He was benched more than once and was protected from scrutiny by his coach when it happened. Now this?

His alleged actions are incredibly selfish and stupid, and if true he's lucky he's still around to defend himself. South Bend and other area law enforcement agencies have lost an inordinate amount of officers in the line of duty in the last decade or so and have used deadly force on resisting suspects more times than I can count in the last few years. At least twice on suspects who were not even carrying firearms they justifiably (as far as the state was concerned) took lives. Had Palmieri succeeded in getting this officer's stun gun and attempted to use it, it's conceivable this could have turned tragic. My guess is this kid is about one more mistake away from throwing away a whole lot of talent.

Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

Just for clarification, I am not in the "college kids will be college kids" camp. When you get a scholarship (that amounts to more money than I make in a year) and you play for Notre Dame (as opposed to Southwestern Michigan College, or that ilk), I don't think you should be entitled to a get out of jail free card.

I know college kids drink. Just do it at the Hockey House and don't climb in the back of a moving vehicle and don't be so unbelievably arrogant as to think you can outmaneuver a cop.

**Nasty comment coming up:**

Take the silver spoon out of your mouth, or wherever you keep it, and act with others in mind.

Ask Kyle McAlarney how much he enjoyed his year away from Notre Dame, and by all accounts his arrest went a whole lot more smoothly than this one.

McAlarney's suspension (for a semester, not a whole year) was not about being arrested, it was about being arrested for a drug offense (edit: and I don't think he would have been suspended for more than a few games if it were solely up to the basketball coaching staff).

I tend to think that Sheahan will be fine with ResLife (no idea how the coaching staff will handle it), as minor consumption is to a certain extent de rigeur, while Palmieri is more likely to be in serious trouble.

I think that's the belief of all the posters. Sheahan was fairly normal. Palmieri started off normal, then resorted to stupid and dangerous.
