Notre Dame going Independent?

Re: Notre Dame going Independent?

What's debatable? the 2 FF in the last 4 seasons, or the 4 NCAA appearances in the last 5, or as many or more wins as just about anyone since 2005, or the fact one of the giants of the college game is at the helm behind the bench, or the the brand new $50 million dollar home...? I wasn't aware that weak programs generally accomplished any of those things. the IQ of this board gets lower and lower every year. I think Puck Swami had the right idea...

Sorry I disagree. When I think of good programs I think of schools who have been able to win for at least ten years. Notre Dame is well on its way but they certainly need to produce a little while longer before many of us consider Notre Dame a good program.

Notre Dames very success over the last 5 years mirrors the Gophers continuing slide. Perhaps the two have switched places. With a new hockey arena, A Notre Dame education, Why would a smart hockey player choose MN over ND? I forgot MN is the place where the top future NHL'ers make a quick pit stop. How many years will it take for MN to be considered an average D-1 hockey program? MN is more than welcome to remind ND what a good program is in January......

And if Notre Dame had been at this level for 10 years, but not managed yet to cross over the line and win a championship, would that suddenly become your over riding criteria? Or perhaps if they had a championship banner to hang, would it be multiple banners? I guess the only people I'm really concerned with thinking we have a good program are the teams we beat. Make sure you pop into a thread that concentrates on Miami and remind them they aren't a good program yet either because they've only been consistently good since 2003... Oh wait, nobody is jealous of Miami...

Well you neglect the biggest difference between Miami and Notre Dame....which is that Miami is a dynasty and Notre Dame isn't. :p

Sorry Miami fans, couldn't resist the temptation!

Sorry, but MN > Notre Dame, its not even close, and this from someone who hates the Gophers

First, I've said this before, if a kid from Minnesota was given the choice to be a top recruit at the U of MN or your defending national champion tUMD, they'd have an 80% chance of choice the Gophers... if they grew up in Duluth. 100% if they were from anywhere else in the state. And you think people don't bring up the exact same thing about Miami being a flash in the pan? Where have YOU been lately, cause it certainly wasn't on USCHO.

Huh? Please re-read what I said. We are not comparing Notre Dame to Minnesota.

They are on their way but they are in the same category as Notre Dame.

I am actually agreeing with a St. Cloud fan. ;P It is going to be interesting how well Miami and Notre Dame (if they join) do in the new conference. I bet within 5 years the same former WCHA teams are at the top of the standings dominating that new league.

I'm not sure what ND fans are getting so defensive about. Do I believe that Miami and ND have been among the best programs in college hockey over the last, slightly less than a decade? Of course. Does this make them elite programs in the grandeur scheme of college hockey? I don't think so, not yet.

Miami fans only need to look 2 hours up the road to see what the loss of a talented young coach and change of priorities within an administration can do to a thriving hockey program. And they have more than a participation banner, boo :(.

Edit: That being said, I don't think either programs are going away anytime soon. But isn't trying to say that Minnesota and ND are "switching" spots like telling a Notre Dame fan that TCU is more of an elite college football program than the Irish?

It's not simply being defensive. More and more this forum is made up of a bunch of bores. Too many posters who are too intellectually challenged to offer up anything more than one variation or another of "Notre Dame suc ks.

If anyone actually read the post that started this tangent on the topic, I only referred to Notre Dame as a "good" program anyway. After what we have accomplished since Jackson arrived only a blind idiot (or someone who hates Notre Dame in the same way anyone hates the most well known schools, out of jealousy or envy of the attention we get -- some of it deserved, some of it not) would not agree. Had I said "the BEST program" or "most envied" or even "great" I could see someone saying I was a bit over the top. Had I posted that our program is better than ANY of the other programs that any knowledgeable fan would agree are the tops in this game, I could see being called out for it. I never have, and it will take a handful of NCAA championships and probably another 20 seasons like the last 5 year run before I would. But then I'm not some know-nothing fan boy, the likes of who are populating this forum more and more. I've been posting on USCHO for longer than all but about 5% of the rest of you (I know, bringing that up means I automatically lose the thread) and close to the hockey program since BEFORE it was even an official member of the WCHA. And for the first 5 or 6 years around here when Notre Dame did not matter as a hockey program at all, it was rare to read comments that in all honesty can only be interpreted in the ways I describe. Now, they are commonplace. And that make this place less and less interesting every day.

And for the record, I'm not hating on Miami with my recent comments. I have admired what MU is building for quite some time and have repeatedly defended the MU posters who have taken similar abuse on this forum when they have dared to celebrate their growth as a program. The point is nobody hates MU for being MU. I have little time for people who "hate" Notre Dame for all the stupid reasons they hate it. It eliminates the possibility for reasonable and fun discourse on a message board, and usually just reveals the limitations in the person doing the hating.

Having seen what has happened to the Notre Dame football program in the last two decades, I'm not sure that the on the field results wouldn't back up a claim like that.

I won't quote your whole post, but I was responding to what NDGolden said just because I thought it was kinda silly. Trying to discredit a program with a long hockey history becasue they are in a downturn, all sports are cyclical. I completley agree with what you are saying, I think most of the Miami posters have found it much more gratifying to talk about our progam's growth on Miami message boards because it does get old hearing how none of it means anything.

And I know many many ND fans... 75% of them would try to hit me for that TCU comment so props on objectivity :)

Except he never said anything like that...he said you are on your way but it takes time to be considered a good program. HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!! Your persecution complex got in the way of your reading comprehension so you and another of your ilk had to whine like 5 year olds...even though he didnt even disparage your program. (let alone say it sucks or was weak as you pretend he did) Get some thicker skin dude or just lighten up because if anyone saying they disagree with your feelings about Notre Dame is going to push forth a reaction like the one you had then the only bore around here will be you.

What he said.

Not very insightful on my part and probably a boring response in the eyes of a certain ND poster...

Well said and correct. You have defended Miami (and vice versa), especially as the programs emerged. But, we actually do have one or two who have hated on MU for being MU (see the "of Ohio" stuff a year or two ago); it was just ridiculous. But again, nothing like ND experiences - I get your point completely and I am not trying to compare. We (Miami) have also had those prone to hyperbole more than ND, so I guess some what we got was deserved.

I think ND is more likely to maintain than Miami. I'm not saying they both can't maintain, just saying for a lot of obvious reasons it will be easier for ND. It will be interesting to see if Miami keeps up. Realistic Miami people know it is fragile, but I do remember the "of Ohio" stuff (mostly one OSU fan) saying Miami was a one class wonder (the Ryan Jones, Nathan Davis class). Now we'll see if Miami is a three class wonder. :) By the way, Tyler Biggs is on campus today. :)

Re: Notre Dame going Independent?

:) By the way, Tyler Biggs is on campus today. :)

:D:D:D And per his twitter seems to be as lost and confused as any good freshmen should be.

I'll have to go back and look for the "of Ohio" stuff you are referencing, I think that was before my time.

Re: Notre Dame going Independent?

Thanks JJfP.

I would not bother, 628, it was just some of the foolish stuff/trolling you get on here.
