Maybe you should. If you are worried about the end of "Christian Europe" because they might dare build a mosque where Notre Dame was (something that wouldnt happen outside the pathetic mind of Flaggy) then you are a bigot and a small man. Jesus would hate the way you think about pretty much everything.

Dont like the truth...too bad. Feel free to ignore it for all I care everyone else knows it is true outside of a few you have snowed into believing you are pius just misguided.

Is really is amazing that there are so many people who’s minds have become so diseased by right wing propaganda that they live in fear of such nonsense.

One thing I was getting irked with on the drive home was Brian Williams kept rambling about how the firefighters were just spraying water in and couldn't battle the fire because their equipment couldn't get high enough / lack of water pressure. My first thought was that they were merely trying to wet the stone/timbers down ahead of the fire in an attempt to slow the fire and contain it.

It's amazing that they were able to keep as much of the superstructure as they were. So glad these very early morning reports are hopeful, as day breaks I'm sure we'll get more reports. *edit* Especially after the initial reports directly from government officials that the building had been lost.

So as we wake up this morning, it does appear that much of the lower part of the structure was saved. Most of the high arches you see from the inside are still standing, and where they did collapse, PFD put that out pretty quickly using a remote robot to put water on it.

If there's any luck remaining, the worst of the worst will be the roof and the spire. And one wonders if modern materials will be used for the roof- so that it's lighter, robust to fire, and also more structurally sound. In theory, you can make metal trusses where it will not push out on the sides of the building- which was the reason the flying buttresses were needed in the first place. That means the slow degradation of that outer structure will be slowed down or stopped, as the pressure from the building will no longer be there. And doing that can also be done reasonably quickly- as the trusses can be partially completed off site.

What needs to be done ASAP is getting the damaged scaffolding down and a temporary roof put into place.

Also the interior and surrounding ground needs to start to dry out, which will unfortunately take time. Getting (even kinda sorta) heavy equipment in to remove the scaffolding and stabilize the walls will be tricky.

Indeed, closing the structure in will be key.


*edit* the concern I see at this point as well is the amount of melted lead that will be *everywhere.* Along with any concoction of chemicals that the various timbers were soaked/coated in over the last 850 years.

As long as they get the structure sound enough to get people in and start working, I would expect the water clean up to not take horribly long- there are a lot of specialists that can do that. As for the lead- everywhere is only bad where the arches collapsed. Otherwise it would be reasonably contained in the rock arches.

And to remove the current scaffolding- I would think one of the huge tower cranes can be used for that.

So, to me, the key concern is getting the building supported enough to let workers do their thing. And looking at a live feed this morning, there are people all over the building looking at it, which I suspect are checking to see what is still sound.

I wouldn't say hate, rather he'd be disappointed or saddened in the way he thought about the situation. Jesus didn't hate - that was his whole thing in the minds of his authors.

I don't know anything about Notre Dame in particular, but "Pillars of the Earth" was a surprisingly good novel for a story about building a cathedral, and the only Follett novel I could really get into.

Just saw a CNN update showing people taking art out of the cathedral and to safe places. This was after the fire- so more indicators that the fire didn't spread as feared- kept to the roof, mostly.

It's a children's book but it's beautifully done, with lovely drawings about each stage of construction and a storyline about the social, religious, and economic motives of the builders, the churchmen, etc.
