Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

Absolutely. Thats what I've been saying. The growing competitiveness of the league speaks volumes of the fact womens hockey is maturing. 20 years ago you had a sprinkle of girls playing on boys teams.

With respect to COTY award going to Bolding, I gotta go with Prez's argument. Let's face it, this years young NU squad could of gone either way and somehow the coaching staff pulled one out of the hat. At the end of the day, your win/loss record speaks for itself, hence somewhat of a no brainer. But like I said, this is play off season. I'd love to see a Salve/NU final next weekend!

I guess I'm just more impressed by the record Salve put together, particularly after a coaching change, than what Norwich did. Everyone expects Norwich to be at the top because of their advantages so what they did just wasn't as impressive in my opinion.

Both teams had a good years and hopefully they'll get to settle it on the ice next weekend!

That's a nice blanket statement that doesn't really add anything to this discussion. When you analyze their respective seasons I firmly believe what Salve accomplished under a new coach was much more impressive. Yes the Cadets had lots of Freshmen. No surprise there after graduating so many last year. Salve's new coach had no chance to recruit, had 6 Freshman that the former coach recruited, and that's a much more difficult starting point going into any season compared to a well established team with a returning coach. In the end it's all relative but she obviously wins in my book (and I don't work at Salve so I don't have to be publicly loyal like you do).

Did you miss the part where I said I was surprised Bolding won it?

I'm curious as to what you mean by " Everyone expects Norwich to be at the top because of their advantages". What do you feel are their advantages?

Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

Well, I like the discussion. You both made good points. Is it harder for a Coach to mold young players to bring out their potential to form a team (must also break bad habits from previous teams) out or is it harder for a Coach to come aboard with the players that were picked for you? Ummmm, that is a hard one. I would have to go with the record of Norwich. Many line changes, some nail bitter games but they are jelling together nicely. They seem to have three lines that can all produce numbers. Norwich's win yesterday was amazing. They made the passes and they looked like they "clicked". I know it wasn't against a national ranked team, but they skated throughout the game and looked very strong till the end. Good luck Norwich Saturday in the semi's.

NU Fan asked you two day's ago to tell us what the advantages were for Norwich. Then talk about a blanket statement. "It's obvious that they have so many Freshman after graduating so many seniors". That really added alot to the discussion.

It is well known that they are very committed to their hockey programs and that means financially in every sense of the word from program budget to financial aid. They are not alone either. The top teams every year are at schools that are very committed to their hockey programs. For example, you'll never see a NEC or a Cortland win a national championship in women's hockey, but Norwich, Plattsburgh, Elmira are always going to have a chance. Hey, if I'm a recruit and one of those schools is pursuing me as well as some low end D1 programs, I'd go to one of those D3 programs in a heartbeat because I know I'll most likely be in the NCAA tournament every year. You can't trade that type of a great experience for a low end D1 experience in my opinion.

You are mostly correct shelfi, except for the financial aid part. Given the NCAA rules on D3 financial aid, I believe most schools are somewhat limited to whatever the FASFA says (although I'm not a university financial aid officer), and to a lesser extent, how bad the coach wants the recruit. But in terms of infrastructure...the rink, locker room, athletic training facilities, not to mention the campus and staff,
you are dead on.

Looking forward to the weekend. I seem to recall last years ECAC tourny game vs. UMASS where it took Torry Charron to snipe one for the close win so I expect this years matchup to be another close one, although a win for NU again.

Norwich has gone into alot of third periods with 0-0 ties this season and UMB's goaltender is much better than that second period she had in there regular season meeting.
As long as they don't start making plans for Sunday and skate like they can every shift, they should be fine. The Cadet's puck movement and quality of shots look's much improved over the last four games. Great to see Gallagher back on the blue line last week, kid does a great job of stepping up and keeping puck's deep.

Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

Certainly hope the Norwich fan base takes the ride over the mountains to Midd instead of staying home to watch the men play Plymouth St.

Might get a few, but unfortunately most of the NU fan base is older and will like to stay close to home and see the team play one last game at Kreitzberg this season.

And the fact that there is now video.

What a game it was vs Castleton! One had to figure they (Spartans) would come out swinging and they certainly did.

I think it's great to see more true ECAC EAST teams beginning to show real improvement. I say "true" because unless you are NCAA eligible, it why even bother being in the league. Frankly, I'd just assume see St A, ST Mikes and Holy Cross out of the EAST conference if they can't be regular D3. With so many teams looking to compete, it just doesn't make sense anymore. Now, this new North Atlantic division... will they all be NCAA eligible?

I plan on being at the Middlebury game and although it's not a home game, it sure beats driving to Platty or worse that purple place in NY state :)
The regular season match vs Middlebury could of gone either way and feel the same toward this one, except I feel we will win based on confidence gained from the EAST title win, and the resulting experience. And then you have Middlebury losing it's game last weekend. Of course that's just an opinion mind you.

I think your right, especially being there last home game.

Think the women head over to Middlebury with a bit of a chip on there shoulder due to not getting a home game. I said last week that I was happy to see Gallahger back in the line up and all she did was get the biggest assist of the year on Saturday. Didn't have her in that overtime loss last month. Kid really completes the D-corp.

Midd has the best player in D-3 hockey in Fluke, then you add in Bolding/Mandigo, two Vermont schools, you don't need to look to far to hype this game. Saturday can't come soon enough!!!

I think if they understood the process, they knew they were playing their last home game. They just weren't getting a game over Plattsburgh, Elmira, and Middlebury and one game was definitely going to be out west. That said, whatever it takes to motivate them. I think there is almost nothing separating the top 6 teams in this tourney anyway. No upset if anyone outside of Lake Forest or St. Thomas wins the whole thing.

Still don't look at this as being a true 1 through 8 National tournament. Wis-Falls in my opinion gets the easy ride to the Frozen four. It's obviously about money (travel) and gauranteeing a west team in the Frozen Four. Elmira should be hosting Lake Forest, Wis-Falls to Midd and Trinity should be going to Norwich.

Elmira having to beat Trinity with the season they just had doesn't seem right.

River Falls was definitely a top team during the regular season. It's hard to say exactly where they should slot in since there isn't much inter-regional play. Yes, travel (and money) does play a part as the Div III hockey tournament is not a money maker. I also agree with you that Elmira has a tough first rounder, but it was the "easiest" team left for them after Plattsburgh and River Falls' opponents were determined. River Falls got the highest ranked team it could play with the travel restrictions. It's pretty well known that the east (with twice as many teams) is deeper than the west and there were fewer upsets (is Trinity even that big an upset?) east leaving no easy path to the Final Four.
