Norwich Cadets Hockey 2013: The Final Countdown...

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2013: The Final Countdown...

Norwich set to welcome 14 freshmen in 2013-14.

Who's not returning? This happens every year, and I can't stand it. I hate to see guys choose a college because they were recruited there to play hockey, and then get dropped from the team after a year or two. This isn't the NHL, and these student-athletes don't deserve that.

This is very rare for Norwich. Every year in my memory (which goes back a long ways) the recruits basically replaced the ones who graduated or left school. I would suspect that there were a fairly good number of players who aren't coming back. I would not be surprised if one of the goalies didn't return. Please note that I have no inside information any more - Lafayette, CO is a long ways from Northfield. I used to get the scoop from some of the players that I knew, but no more.

Norwich roster will be posted in the coming weeks.

I will add that many of the players who didn't return in the past were due to academic, personal, or disciplinary issues that had nothing to do with hockey, or because the student made a choice that their academic standing was more important than playing another season of hockey.

I don't recall a lot of players ever being "run off" by Norwich. Some have left because they didn't get as much playing time as they envisioned, and those kinds of cases are somewhere in between being run off and deciding to hang it up on their own. Lots of times Freshmen come in and think (or were led to believe) that they are going to get a lot of playing time as a premier winger or center, and they discover they are in over their head. Who's fault that is is probably a shared responsibility.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2013: The Final Countdown...

I commented on this back in the Spring but I know there was a list of some Underclassmen that were off the official roster because of academic, disciplinary issues as someone else said. People got a little angry when I mentioned the list but the players weren't given their official roster spots back meaning they could still come back this year and fight for a spot but they weren't guaranteed a spot for the year. Not sure who out of those players (if any) came back this year but that's the story I've been told.

Any academic or disciplinary issue are FERPA protected, which is why we don't know, unless the player self-discloses.

In the past I have had information about players who were on the academic edge and needed to take courses over the summer to stay eligible (sometimes because the ended up on one of my classes). Sometimes they make it and sometimes they don't. If they are unfortunate enough to have to take a really hard core course, it can get dicey.

Understandable, I know the list I had heard has been accurate so far. Held a couple of Freshman from last year and some other players that probably didn't play as much as they would have liked. I know Baldino has left and is back playing in the EJHL for the Boston Bandits. This is the only one I know for sure on.

Attrition happens. Not very rare. The year Cleaver graduated (along with 5 others), McShane brought in 12 first-years, with only 5 of those seeing the ice in their senior season (2012-2013).

Attrition definitely happens, I totally agree. Rarely are there major numbers of players being bounced from the team willy-nilly as was suggested above. I was pretty familiar with most of the situations, which was my point

Take Me Out To the Ballpark ... again!

From the Official Press Release ...

BOSTON – The Norwich University men’s ice hockey team will be returning to Fenway Park for the second time in three years as the Cadets will take on Babson College outdoors on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., as a part of Citi Frozen Fenway 2014.

Norwich and Babson met previously at Fenway Park on Jan. 13, 2012 with the Cadets scoring a 4-1 win over the Beavers in front of over 7,250 fans, which was the largest crowd to ever witness a NU men’s hockey game. It was also the first-ever Division III men’s hockey game played at the iconic home field of the Boston Red Sox.

Current senior Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.) scored a pair of goals, while current senior Parker Carroll (West Chester, Pa.) stopped 18 shots to lead Norwich to the victory.

Prior to that game, Norwich University last made an appearance at Fenway Park on Oct. 31, 1914 when the football team lost to Boston College 28-6.

Citi Frozen Fenway 2014 is the third installment of a two-week long outdoor hockey festival featuring numerous hockey games at a variety of different levels. The headline matchups include eight Division I Hockey East schools with two games each on Jan. 4 and 11. Merrimack and Providence will meet on Jan. 4 with Notre Dame taking on Boston College in the nightcap on the first Saturday. The following Saturday will feature UMass-Lowell playing Northeastern University and the Univ. of Maine taking on Boston University in the later matchup.

Norwich and Babson won’t be the only NCAA Division III game this year however, as Salem State will take on UMass-Boston on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Tickets for the remaining college and high school hockey games will be available starting in November.

Didnt see Aucion on the blues roster, must have been sent down to AHL for the season start, will probably be back after a few injuries or so, they also have crazy contract stipulations as well.........

Keith unfortunately was sent down last week. He cleared waivers too so no one picked him up, which allowed STL to send him down.

I'm not sure if they still have to pay him his NHL salary of 625K though. I think they do since he was on a one-way deal.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2013: The Final Countdown...

I caught about 10 mins of practice yesterday on my way home, the thing that jumped out at me the most was the team speed.
