Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

This old Cadet agrees 100%. The Panthers vs. the Cadets will always be "The Game" to me.

To the students and players, the Rivalry probably already is "The Rivalry". They only know of the Midd-Norwich Rivalry by heresay, but already have experienced Castleton-Noorwich games. The "older "alums and fans won't buy into the CSC-NU Rivalry for a while. Back in the day, Middlebury,(that priveleged, liberal arts bastion of left-winged ideology), and Norwich, (that patriotic, blue collar, service above self institution), were natural enemies, and although like a fine wine it mellows with age, there will NEVER be a better feeling to a former Cadet than to beat Middlebury....

I echo Cadet Crosby's sentiments to Georgia Peach's post. What great memories those NU vs. Middlebury games are. I am not even sure back then that we were really conscious of what anyone's record was when they played us ('62-'66). Actually I was shocked to learn that in '64 Middlebury went 3 and 20 (.130). And over those four years they had a .428 winning percentage and one winning season above .500. But it was still the game and all that mattered was beating them in what was always a tough game.

Middlebury isn't sleeking off. They have too much invested in their facilities matched by an equal amount of history and I would not be surprised that if in two or three years Middlebury dominates NESCAC hockey again--with or without Beaney. And actually, having beaten Bowdoin earlier this season by a greater margin than their later loss--they are technically in second place in the NESCAC with three games to go including a final against Amherst--who earlier only beat the Panthers in OT. One bum season does not destroy a program.

So long as they remain committed--our mutual Vermont roots, long history and cultural rivalries should sustain the intensity that has always has been part of "THE game." As a student I had only heard of Plattsburg State--but now I see an intense hockey rivalry that has emerged outside of the ECAC-E. And a worthy one at that--always tough, in your face and for the most part all based on skill and rarely muscle. Actually I am delighted by a strong CSU, who along with Plattsburg and Middlebury always bring to the Cadet schedule a test throughout the season of just how good our team really is :) (...or isn't :(). They are all important rivals!

Good luck this weekend but first lets get by Skidmore and only then worry about Castleton, rivalries, etc.

Senior goaltender Colin Bessey stopped 38 shots to lead the Skidmore College hockey team to a 3-2 win over top-ranked Norwich University in ECAC East action, Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

The win moves the Thoroughbreds (9-11-2, 8-7 ECAC) into a tie for the fourth and final home ECAC East playoff berth with three games remaining in the regular season.

After a scoreless first half of the game, Skidmore’s Tyler Doremus scored to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead at 9:41 of the second. Chris Powers and Bessey assisted.

The teams traded chances in the third, with the Cadets tying the game at 11:01 when Shane Gorman collected a rebound off the glass to score his eighth of the season from Pasha Kozhokin and Colin Mulvey.

Skidmore responded a minute later when Tony Giacin backhanded a pass in front to Julian Malakorn, who beat Norwich goalie Chris Czarnota for his third goal of the season at 12:17.

A too-many-men penalty on the Thoroughbreds at 18:22 gave Norwich a late power play and a two-man advantage with Czarnota out. Jack Walsh was able to clear the puck from his own zone into the empty net to make it 3-1 with 19:18 to play.

The Cadets did get the power-play goal from Christophe Paquet at 19:51 to make it a one-goal game, but Skidmore held on for the final nine seconds for the win.

Jack Walsh scored a short-handed goal in the final minute to seal Skidmore’s 3-2 upset of No.¤1 Norwich in a college men’s hockey game Friday night.

Chistophe Paquet scored with nine seconds remaining for Norwich (18-2-1) but it wasn’t enough against Skidmore goalie Colin Bessey, who racked up 38 saves.

Tyler Doremus and Julian Malakorn gave Skidmore leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before Walsh’s short-handed tally 19:18 into the third period provided breathing room.

Shane Gorman had NU’s other goal, Pasha Kozhokin and Colin Mulvey assisting. All of Chris Czarnota’s seven saves came in the first period.

Way to go Cadets, great team work and effort for your 7-5 win over Castleton. I am sure we will meet them again, but you are ready for them, especially with it being at Kreitzberg with all of us to cheer you on. Astounding win.:p

That one was darn close to a rivalry game if you ask me!

Like I said in an earlier post--games with Middlebury, Plattsburg and Castleton are all rivalries now. What a game but both teams today in Rutland--both deserve congratulations. We will see those Spartan guys again. As for this rivalry stuff--as McShane said in the pre-game inteview from this point going forward all the games--regardless of opponent are playoff games. But what a performance we saw today.

Seems like we've seen too much of him this year. He set the tone early with a couple of borderline calls to put the Cadets down two, and he proceeded to be bad both ways.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

The Castleton/Norwich hockey game was one of the most exciting hockey games that I have seen in some time. Sort of like a NCAA quarterfinal playoff game. Sell out crowd of 1550+, pep band, very loud fans (at least near me), and the Spartan that climbed out of the Zamboni all helped to create the big time excitement even before the game started. The game was a back and forth with Castleton going up 2, and Norwich scoring 3 even before the first period was out. Norwich speed finally created the scoring chances to give Norwich the edge at the end. But what I recall is the hitting thoughout the game and the battle's in the corner which were always hard fought. For Norwich the scoring was spread out with Kyle Thomas having 2 goals and 3 points for the game. Some fans were telling me Number 9 (Justin Alanzo) ran the Norwich goalie a couple of times before the end of the game but overall he played an outstanding game for Castleton.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

My neice went to Castleton and my grand neice goes to Skidmore, so it was no win situation within the family this weekend.:( But the ECAC-E title says it all for me!!:D

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Having not been to Spartan Arena (nee Rutland Regional Fieldhouse) in a couple of years, I forgot how bad the sight lines are. You would have thought that they could have configured the bleachers so that the view down the ice doesn't require staring straight along a row of heads. I was also surprised that they STILL have the exposed steam pipes and the aluminum foil ceiling. I know not everybody get a Fred Kreitzberg to support their program, but still it seems that some of those things could be made better than they are without spending a lot of money. That being said, it was a great game with lots of twists and turns.
