Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Kyle Thomas in his Fr. Yr. had 9 assists and in his So. Yr. he had 12 aasists. This year he has 9 assists in only 9 games.I think those are pretty good numbers and certainly show an improvement in his game.

I think he's doing just fine.

I think the comments above are from seeing what happens when Kyle gets loose. He does have the ability to shake free and do a lot of one on one skating. When he's in the flow of the play, he shares the puck quite well. I think, like some of the big guns who have preceded him, Kyle gets a lot of attention from the other team when he gets the puck, and sometimes it is hard for him to pass. The good thing is that Norwich has more than just Thomas - unlike Kashirsky's last year, it's not the case that if you shut down Thomas, you shut down the whole team. Pay too much attention to him, and you will pay. If yu wear yourself out too much chasing him, one of his line mates is likely to get a break and make you pay.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

To me, he has become more selfish than he was two years ago. If you watch the games closely, you will see that he would actually be more of a threat if he changed his game. He needs to learn to pass the puck and work give-and-go's, using his speed ...
I've only seen him thrice, and have watched him closely, but in those games, he didn't pass because no one on his team could keep up with him. Who is he supposed to pass to when his linemates AND the defenders are 4 strides behind!? He plays in a different dimension.

haven't seen him play but he sounds alot like Neil Musselwhite, would that be a good comparison?

I'm not sure....Neil was good, but I still think Thomas is in the more elite DIII players of all time...with the McLeans, Aucoins, Bournazakis.....

Thomas and musselwhite would be a great race. However I think kyle might have him by a nose...Kyle has more scoring punch than Neil. Neil never really broke out scoring wise till his senior year, Kyle has been scoring since his freshman year.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Neil did win the DI fastest skater competition, perhaps when nomination time comes up we could push to have Thomas in the competition like we did for Neil. I'd like to see this Thomas guy play, but unfortunately Oz won't be playing Norwich this year... well maybe in Placid if they both play their cards right. (thats not a Plattsburgh pun)

Unfortunately, they stopped doing the skills competition at the Frozen Four last year so we won't have the opportunity to see him win a race in that environment. It would have been fun to watch, that's for sure.

I was trying to remain silent and take my dead horse home with me, but I think this is an absurd comment. Being super fast and a "threat" offensively does not make you an exceptional player. IMO, he isn't anywhere close to those guys you mentioned, as a complete hockey player. I'll stick by what I said before, I'd take 4 or 5 guys on this years' NU team over Thomas if I had a choice.

and you keep thinking that.....like Crosby said...thats why NHL scouts are all over him....they must be there looking at your other 4 or 5 players.......you obviously must know more then them......the other players did have defensive flaws as well but worked on them...Thomas still has another year...its obvious he must have ******ed in your corn flakes or something. Ovechkin sucks on defense too, but offensivly is a great player.

I am not sure how many Norwich games you have seen this year but take the Dartmouth game as an example of Kyle Thomas play. In this game I though the players Dartmouth had real problems with were the speed guys like Thomas, Mulvey, Allan, and Lawler. Just my opinion but I though Kyle Thomas talent was equal to any Dartmouth player and Darmouth always has a lot of players going into the NHL. Darmouth just had a few more high level players than Norwich.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Listen. I have nothing against Kyle Thomas. I've never even met the guy. This isn't a personal attack.

I just think that consistency, play without the puck, vision, passing, and defensive awareness are also part of a player's skill set. Being fast doesn't make a player great. Kyle scored 5 points on day one against UNE and has 10 in the 8 games since. Good, but nothing special. No points in the last 3 games. I'm just saying.

I'm fine with the fact that we disagree, and I'm sorry if it sounded personal. Again, it isn't. I hope he scores 30 goals this year, and I hope the Cadets win it all. I hope he does make it to the NHL. That would be great for him and the school. Right now, though, I just don't think he's a great player.

Alden is certainly entitled to his opinion.

I just hope this turns into bulletin board material for Kyle and he scores a hatty against Morrisville next time out :)

Also, for what it is worth, Pier-Olivier Cotnoir is scoreless in his last three games as well. Janke only has one goal in the last three too.

Castelton, Skidmore, and Platty really focused their efforts on stopping Cotnoir and Thomas. That's one reason why the other guys were able to step up. Kind of like playing whack-a-mole.

Good interview. Worthy comments and respects for both the Cardinals and Cadet's last game. And a really insightful question about the proliferation of concussions in hockey at all levels. And an equally well thought out reply from Mike regarding the increase speed of the sport as opposed to just a decade ago combined with more attention being paid to concussions-- with a net/net result that the sport may need to rethink and improve the headgear. Thanks George. Let the second half of the season begin--one game at a time. Happy holidays :)

That's what I really like about the relationship we have with both Plattsburgh and Middlebury. The games are great, but when they are over both sides respect what the other side has done. To me this is one of the best parts of following the Cadets.

And believe me, you have to know, even though the outcome of the quarter final last spring was not what I wanted, I still rooted for Norwich in the next round!

John Connolly spotlighted the Norwich men's and women's hockey programs in his column this week in the Boston Herald.

Given light of the recent discussion on Kyle Thomas, McShane had the following quote on Thomas:
“Thomas (6-9-15) has done it all for us. He may be the best kid I’ve coached here. He’s explosive. He gets the big goals.”

Pretty lofty quote given the names that have donned the Norwich sweater over the 17 years McShane has been here.
