Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Although Chris played well and is 10 times better than where he was last year...I assure there is no goalie controversy in Northfield. It's Parkers job until/if he ever really hits a rough patch.

Just trying to steer the conversation into more interesting waters.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

I mean come on guys will it really matter who plays? They're playing the offensive struggling Cardinals Friday night....McShane could probably shut them out in net...I mean its just Plattsburgh...or Plattsburg for you non geography majors.....all kidding aside can't wait for another great game. Thank god for NSN...now just have to make sure the wife isn't in labor from 7-930 Friday night. Not sure the docs would like hearing ducky inbetween contractions.....thanks again to Norwich for giving us video.....*sarcastic tone towards bruce almighty*

After watching the team this year I got to agree Parker is still number 1, however, it will be interesting to see if he can improve his save% of .887 over the course of the year. Getting Forkey and Bell back at some point would give the coach more matchup options and increase depth. In the big games like Norwich vs Plattsburgh and Norwich vs Castleton having your No 2 center back could make a big differance in the games.

after Fridays game and watching Parker, I can't imagine a controversy! He was lights out and played awesome.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Did you attend last February's Castleton Norwich game?
No, I did not.

The Norwich player in the example I cited ripped the Castleton player's helmet off. There was a lot more than "movement of the glove to the vicinity of the facemask", but yet you assumed by looking at the score sheet that since it was a Norwich player then it was just movement of the glove to the vicinity of the facemask.

You fell into your own trap and highlighted my point by assuming that since a Norwich player was involved then it was just a minor thing. However I spoke about at thei time and a Norwich follower brushed it off as an "aberration".
Where did I say that it had to have been the lesser version of facemasking simply because it was a Norwich player? I didn't. Stop putting words into my mouth. If it happened how you describe it, then the refs got it wrong. That absolutely should have been a DQ. There are grey areas in the rule book, which is why I advised you not to look at a score sheet and immediately make assumptions as to what happened. This is not a grey area, and so I pointed out what the referee's interpretation clearly was at that time. Again, if it happened as you described it, then the referee got it wrong. But, having not seen the incident myself, I can only take your version (as well as the official's) as personal interpretations of events.

Do I believe that Norwich players are incapable of committing violations like this? No. As infrequent as it may be, they are just as capable as any human being to drop to that level of idiocy. For the record: same goes for Plattsburgh Players.

Here is the oriningal thread:

Norwich fans felt that the CSC President should step in to rein in the accumulation of penalties and expressed that coaches (implying their coach) routinely disciplines players for inappropiate play, yet you call a serious situation that was totally in the control of the player an aberratrion.

As an interesting note - I do agree over the years that some CSC players should be reminded in someway (benched?) that they take stupid penalties, but that is something Coach Todd controls. He has done it on occasion but IMO should be more proactive. Time will tell - most coaches adjust thir coaching style as the years pass.
I can't speak for anybody but myself. Do I agree that the incident should taken as an aberration? No. Regardless of how serious it is, if you are guilty of a dumb penalty that isn't a part of the natural flow of the game (that is to say, isn't a mistake play like a hooking or an accidental tripping, etc. I'm basically referring to fighting and any nonsense after the whistle), you need to be disciplined in some way by the coaching staff. That let's the player know that the behavior in question will not be tolerated, thus bettering the team as a whole: the less time they spend with this nonsense, the more time they can focus on improving their individual skill and their team chemistry. That's really what these individual players need to get through their skulls, and it's the coaches responsibility to do just that.

But Benching a player is only one way to discipline a player. And it need not be for an entire game. I've seen players commit a penalty early in the 2nd period, and sit on the bench the rest of that period (defensive pairings getting shuffled during that time to account for only having 5 D), but be allowed to play again in the 3rd. It all depends on how the coach interprets the severity of the act, and where is falls on his disciplinary scale. But looking at a box score, you'd think that player never got disciplined at all. Other ways to discipline include: extra sprints at practice, a monetary fine that goes into a fund that will benefit the team, make the player clean the locker room, basically anything the coach thinks appropriate. Some coaches are more public about how they discipline their guys than others. Again I say: we will know that the player has been adequately disciplined when they stop acting like goons on the ice.

All I was trying to say is that it's on Coach Todd to discipline this player. He can do that in whatever way he wants. And so long as I have no proof to the contrary, I will assume he did just that. By all accounts, he is a respectable guy and a great hockey coach. I mean no disrespect to him, but he's been dealt a very tough hand and now the spotlight's on him. If he doesn't react in an appropriate manner, it's his reputation that's on the line right now.

I think everybody needs to realize that one reason that Carroll's save percentage is where it is lies in the fact that some of the teams that NU plays often don't get their routine shots through to the goalie, so his stats are not padded by the easy chances. He faces a higher proportion of grade A chances than many goalies do, but when he is tested he does rise to the occasion. Carroll was very good against Castleton, especially in the third period. The only really questionable goal that i've seen him give up was the second goal in that game. It looked like he never saw the shot.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Can anyone out there shed some light on the status of Forkey, Bell, and other injuries and what, if any, are the expectations on when they might be available?

Thanks

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

I spoke with Fokey a about a month ago with his arm in a sling at the Southern Maine game and at that time I had heard it would be after Xmas before he returned. Owen Carpino cut his arm on a glass door at the Middlebury Inn after the Primelink. Freak accident that cost him 40 stitches--which I guess would make him another post holiday player. Bell had a concussion and with all the worry these days about head injuries, my guess is they are watching him closely but I do not know what his status is right now. Others hurting no doubt but they seem to be able to hold it together.

Does anyone know if Scott Schroeder will be returning in the 2nd Semester?

Forkey will be back after the break, Carpino is back in the lineup, Bell still out, My guess is no Schroeder for the second semester.

Is Zac Fulton also out with a concussion? I seem to remember that both him and Emmond Bell were out for similar reasons. Too bad about Schroeder:(, I loved watching him play! Any chance Scott and/or Steven will come back next year?

Despite the numerous early injuries, I am impressed with how deep our bench is and the quality hockey the freshman are playing. Great recruiting year for Wick.:)

Great recruiting year for Wick.:)

On paper this was considered a "down year" for recruiting.

But i whole heartedly agree...Thieda and Hale have performed admirably for first years as have Lindensmith and Lawler.

In limited action so far, Poulin and McEleney did well too.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

If you don't see one back at the break....I'd highly doubt it happens next season.

I'm still holding out hope on Scotty for second semester ... but then I'm an eternal optimist.
