Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

everyone take a big deep breath--hopefully the norwich team you saw this weekend will make the necessary adjustments and the freshmen will make that expected transition to d3 hockey-(some already have).this is still a very talented team.looking foward for the second half of the season.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Parker had two saves on three shots for the entire third period....???????????

I don't think you give the player enough credit. The action was very heavy around the Norwich goal in the third period and Parker held his own out there. Of course, the action was very heavy around the Manhattanville goal from the second period on and Norwich only scored 1 goal.

So far Norwich rearly misses the three defensemen Eric Talent, Tyler Stitt, Steve Coon from last year's team. These losses plus Steven Schroeder not returning to school seem to be losses the Cadets have not been able to make up.

Next weekend would be a good time to get on track against interlock teams Bowdoin/Colby at home; the game on Tuesday against Plattsburgh will be very difficult the way Plattsburgh is playing and the game being in Platsburgh. Two games in Plattsburgh in one year makes a very difficult schedule.

I hope so too, anytime AFTER Tuesday would be good :p ;)

Tuesday would be a better time to start - it would only be fair - the Primelink game started our mini-skid and started Platty's re-emergence. Turn about is fair play :D

Just don't hold your breath!!! I do think that Norwich has a very talented team, but the line up changes on a game to game bases, it's hard to have "chemistry" when that happens. If you look at the teams Norwich has beaten none are very strong, but if you look at the teams they have lost to, all are very good teams and Norwich has struggled to get the right player combinations to get them over the top.

My thoughts;

Line1: Janke, Coutnoir, Schreder, they seem to work well together and compliment each other and are most likely the best 1,2,3 combination in D3 hockey, this is the first PP line1
Line2: Thomas, Anderson, Bell, Thomas is a pure goal scorer, get him with guys who can get him the puck, Bell can do that and add some scoring. Anderson is a good all around player who can dig in the corners and has a good scoring touch, plus all three can stand infront of the net and take the punishment. PP line2
Line3: Forkey, Allen, Duszynski, Forkey was the top scorer last year he’s in a sophomore slump, but too talented to stay there, Allen is fast and has shown he can put the puck in the net, Duszynski is big and strong, good in the corners and can score.
Line4: Mulvey, Houston, McCann, this is your checking line, all are good skaters who don’t hurt you defensively and all have some offensive flare, so if they score it’s a bonus, (Plattsburg game, fourth line 2 goals) but main job is to stop the other teams top lines, or provide a spark when needed.

Power Play: Line1 and Line2, with Eskedjian, Gatien, Carpino, Baker
Penalty Kill: Line3 and Line4, with Eskedjian, Gatien, Carpino, Baker

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

It does seem as if the lines have been constantly shifting. Historically, by this time in the season, the first two lines have become fixed, while there has always been a little flux in the 3rd and 4th lines. Consistency is important and you're right, we haven't seen it yet.

Line combo's seem right but give Coach Mike McShane a little credit. I am sure he can name the Cadets deficiences but it is hard in D3 to add players or make changes mid-season. The line's have been changing to help get of the players untracked. Coach said on the radio that the Cadets lost there top goalie recruit very late in the recruiting season this year. I believe this isn't the only goalie recruit to change plans late.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

I wouldn't worry too much. Before all is said and done Norwich will be right back up there with all the other top teams. We all agree that there is alot of talent there. Looking forward to Tuesday night's game. It should be a good one!! I'd wish you luck, but, you know.....

You can't argue with McShanes record, he's a smart hockey guy but I think the pressure of repeating as NCAA champs is a little daunting. Norwich cannot replace the leadership they lost last year (Stitt, Tallent, Serino, Fimiani, Coon) so they need leadership from some other players other than Anderson. I do think that Norwich has the talent to repeat at champions but they need to let the lines gel a little without always changing them. I also don't think that a mid-season transfer is required, nor do I think that losing their top goalie prospect is the reason, Dubois is playing well. The problem, as I see it, is that when Norwich plays a good team and they get behind it turns into a bunch of one-man shows, the top players start trying to do it all on thier own instead of sticking with the game plan and when they play a weak team it turns into "points" night, everyone trying to pad their points totals.

Norwich is an young team with very good talent, the idea is to win the division and move on, if that means losing a few games while your team matures and sticking with a set line up to get the chemistry right, then do that, don't panic and change the lines around every game.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Saturday's 5-1 loss to Manhattanville intrigued me to do a little more research about Norwich's record at Kreitzberg Arena.

I ventured to think that it was the worst home loss in Kreitzberg history and it turned out I was correct, partially.

Norwich has lost 23 times at home since opening Kreitzberg in 1998. (I had three extra losses somewhere when I did the home sweet home thread)

The first loss came on March 19th, 1999 to Wis. Superior in the NCAA semifinals.

The last loss came on Saturday to Manhattanville, 5-1 and that TIED for the worst defeat in Kreitzberg history, along with a 7-3 loss to Middlebury on Feb. 19, 2005. NU also lost 2-1 to Williams the previous night marking the only time in the 12-year history that Norwich lost back-to-back games at Kreitzberg.

The only teams to beat Norwich at home are:

Middlebury (5) 2/7/09, 4-2; 2/19/05, 7-3; 3/19/04, 3-2 (2OT); 2/21/03, 3-2 (OT); 2/23/01, 6-3
Manhattanville (2) 1/11/01, 5-1 and 12/31/04, 3-2
Castleton (2) 12/11/10, 3-2 (OT) and 2/16/08, 4-3
New England College (2) 3/5/05, 6-5 (OT) and 3/3/01, 2-1
Tufts 1/9/09, 2-1
UMass Boston 2/28/09, 1-0 (OT)
Plattsburgh 1/8/08, 3-2
Conn. College 1/5/07, 4-3
Babson 3/3/07, 4-1
Hobart 3/11/06, 3-1
Williams 2/18/05, 2-1
Trinity 1/19/02, 4-1
MCLA 1/25/02, 4-3 (OT)
Potsdam 12/9/00, 2-1
RIT 12/31/99, 7-4
Superior 3/19/99, 4-2

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

I'm lazy, Derek. I said over the weekend that I didn't recall any time that NU had ever been down 3-0 after 1. That is accurate, but the 7-3 loss to Midd in 05 was even more painful (I tried to forget, I think). We were down 1-0 after 1, but 6-0 after 2. Clearly trailing by 6 goals is the most NU has ever been down at Kreitzberg

Was anyone left in the rink at the start of the third?

I was surprised to see how many people left during the course of the third period on Saturday.

I don't recall a big walkout - the Cadets staged a come back by scoring 3 in a row to close the gap to 6-3

I was surprised to see how many people left during the course of the third period on Saturday.

Shocked the heck out of me - I stayed to the bitter end.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Norwich still has 13 of the 19 players who played against St. Norbers plus Matt McCann on who might of played in the NCAA's if not injured. I am not sure what this means but most fans thought Norwich would be almost as productive again this year. They lost a lot of leadership, 3 excellent defensement, and an All American goalie. For fans it will interesting to see how all this plays out the second half of the year. So far Norwich as learned that it is very difficult to defeat an upper level D3 team.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

I think one of the problems is we have lots of Norwich hockey fans but not that many hockey fans.

I sometimes wonder how many of them are really Norwich hockey fans. I will stay to the end of games because the players are putting outhte effort all year to play, and they deserve to have fans there win OR lose. The trouble is that there are not that many of us Taylor Arena fans still around.
