Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Just thought Alex Dubois was outstanding considering the pressure Plattsburgh brought in the game. He seemed to stay focused and was in good position the whole game.

Any info when Zac Fulton will be available to play. Coach Mike McShane said he might play Saturday night but I didn't see him in the linup.

He is available when "Coach Mike McShane" says he is.

Dubois was solid in net for Norwich... and I was supprised, I didn't see throw any punches or slash anyone saturday night....

The season is young and so is the team, but I am happy with how Norwich is playing so far. They already seem to be ironing out the kinks a young team naturally has. With only two seniors, and 6 juniors to provide experience, I am impressed with the offensive power and feel that the defense is already pulling together after losing Tallent, Coon, Stitt and Klinger to graduation. However...

Dubois picked up a 10 minute misconduct in tonights 7-1 victory over Hamilton. I think he has been playing quite well and has potential great talent, but I am concerned about his already apparent reputation of retaliation/losing control. Hope he gets a handle on it, and if it really is a problem, I am sure McShane will "help" him fix it. I would hate for him to blow his chance of proving he is a "real deal" goalie because of it (especially when he was doubted because of Klinger's amazing record and ability). I don't mean to be critical of Alex, lord knows I couldn't stand the pressure of being a Norwich hockey player. It's easy for a fan to say, "All you have to do is play like you have been playing and stay in control", but thats what I am really thinking. I am also thinking that I want to let him and the whole team know that they are doing an impressive job and that Norwich fans appreciate their skill and desire to play well.

Anybody else care to comment on how the team is doing so far? This thread is fairly quite for a pretty decent beginning of the season, especially following last season's stellar performance. Go Wick!

Outstanding weekend for the Cadets in which they gained 3 points on a rather difficult road trip to Amherst/Hamilton. Couple of big games this week against an improved St. Mike's team in South Burlington and rival Castleton Saturday. The Spartans didn't have a great weekend but are improved this year. Carins is an easy commute for a lot of Norwich fans.

Just noticed the attendance was only 275 for the Norwich/Hamilton game. I would of thought Hamilton playing the 2010 NCAA D3 champs with a lot of exciting players would of generated a big crowd. Is this typical for Hamilton?

Yes. Hamilton draws next to nothing. The rink is freezing. There is no community support and rarely do the students show up although when they do, Hamilton leads the Prez Puck Bunny rankings :)

There aren't many good sightlines in the rink, the team has never been much of a power. It's too bad because admission is free and the rink is unique being the oldest indoor rink in the country.

Bouncy ball is hte draw there. The only time the rink gets a crowd, is when bball has a game jsut before or after. Occasionaly it fills up during halftime.

When are you going to realize that you're not supposed to say things like that anymore? College employees shouldn't have Puck Bunny rankings. Kind of disgusting that you're the women's correspondent.

OMG, I believe Artie12 is channeling Bruce

Ted Ryan of the Burlington Free Press article of th Norwich/St. Mike's game with some quotes from the coach and players.

Sort of an unusal start to the game when it was moved to the small youth hockey arena at Carins when ice problems developed in the larger arena. The small rink got sort of crowded because Norwich always draws a big crowd to St. Mike's.

I thought it was great. It was nothing overbearing. Old Time Hockey :)

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

What are the dimensions of the two rinks? Is rink #2 that much smaller?

http://www.cairnsarena.com/Home.html

They say both are 200x85 but I don't see how the second rink was 85 ft across. It looked tiny.

I think hawk was talking more about the seating capacity. They said the second rink sat 400, which I think was a little generous. The main rink seats 600.

There was PLENTY of standing room available all round the rink however, which made it pretty cool. There was no press box in the second rink, which forced the St. Michael's SID crew, video crew, and Norwich's radio team to broadcast the game from the far rink on top of a girl's locker room.

Commo also broadcasted the entire game from his cell phone because there wasn't a phone connection.

Also when you came into the complex all you could see was some Youth Hockey Mites practicing on the big rink. I wondered what they were doing there with a college game starting in 20 minutes. I think the Norwich players had to move there stuff to new locker rooms in the smaller rink? Sort of made for an interesting night/game. Carins is easy to get to in the Burlington area and not far from Central Vermont.

I don't see how the main rink is 200 feet long. It looks even shorter than Stafford to me. I kinda wish I'd been able to get up there last night, but sometimes life gets in the way.

The ice surfaces are the same size, but the dimensions of the building might affect your perception. I had no problem finding a nice standing room spot, but the bleachers did look a little crowded for all the people that require a heater......

And Norwich didn't move changing rooms.

PLUS a bonus to talk to 3 former players!!
