Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Did Norwich get its name in honor of Norwich, Connecticut - birthplace of Benedict Arnold   :p ;)

Larry,

If you check back somewhere in this forum you will find that the original NU campus was indeed in Norwich, CT. I believe NUPROF could fill you in.

PS,
I just returned from Norwch, Ct yesterday. Spent a couple days at Mohegan Sun. Now thats a casino. over 6,000 OABs. If you ever go, Stay at Comfort Suites, Norwich. Take their shuttle and receive food coupons and wheel bet coupons.

Although I acknowledge that this is nothing more than Wikipedia (and therefore not credible without verification from other sources), this is what I've gathered:

-Founded in 1819 in Norwich, VT (the home town of its founder, and former Superintendent of West Point, Alden Partridge)

-Moved to Middletown, CT in 1825 to be more accessible to a larger student body

-Moved back to Norwich, VT in 1829 when CT refused to renew the charter (The Middletown, CT campus became Wesleyan University only 2 years later)

-Moved to Northfield, VT in 1866 after a fire destroyed most of the Norwich Campus

Other interesting facts:
-Attendance was as few as a dozen men during the civil war (for obvious reasons)

-Was briefly named Lewis College from 1880 to 1884.

-First service Academy to admit Women (1974)

-Merged with Vermont College (Montpelier, VT) in 1972, and the full integration (i.e. joining on the Northfield Campus) of the 2 schools took place in 1993, thus creating the mixed Cadet/Civilian student population we see today. According a post I remember reading from NUProf (can't find it, though), the student bodies voted and decided to use "Cadets" as the mascot of the fully-integrated school.

-The Montpelier Campus is now a graduate school offering 3 master's degree programs in Fine Arts.

For serious history buffs it's all HERE

Although "unsanitized" versions of the story have Dartmouth College holding sway over local residents and playing a significant role in "driving" the University out of Norwich!!:D

There were several joint committees from the two campuses which met to address those issues. The athletic mascot group also considered "Horsemen" (based on the cavalry heritage) and "Eagles," but went with Cadets.

The Norwich version is that Dartmouth students set the fire.
The Dartmouth version is "nonsense"

Excellent News!!!

Norwich and NSN have entered a 3 year agreement that will allow videostreamed broadcasts of the majority of the men's home hockey games, at no charge.

Selected women's games, as well as all home football, and a few other athletic contests, are also included.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

After reviewing the recruit list for Norwich you have to believe more then three guys are joining the team this month. Sort of curious that the additional names have not leaked out so close to the start of school. With only 3 weeks or so to go I will ask the guys at the first football game.

With still no official notice of breakup with the NESCAC it is going to be interesting to see how the whole situation is going to shake out. If the NESCAC leaves the interlock and the D2 schools leave also recruiting a couple of additional schools from a list that includes Plymouth, Curry, Wentworth, and Manhattanville would be on my wish list. Nice to see USM and UMB staying in the East to be part of a more competitive league that puts more resources into hockey then the MASCAC. In fact Southern Maine the last few years while not winning the ECAC East has been very competitive with all the interlock teams. Same with UMB.

Straight from Crosby's latest Spam Attack :D

Norwich University and the Northfield Savings Bank have reached a sponsorship agreement for this season’s NU men’s ice hockey holiday tournament. The Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament, which replaces the Times Argus Invitational, will be held Dec. 31, 2010 and Jan. 1, 2011.

This year’s event will include perennial powers Norwich, Manhattanville and Adrian, along with Nichols. Norwich, the defending NCAA Division III National Champion, will host ECAC Northeast foe Nichols in one semifinal contest. Manhattanville, the defending ECAC West Champion, will face defending MCHA Champion and 2010 NCAA Tournament participant Adrian in the other semifinal matchup.

The combined 2009-10 winning percentage of the four teams participating in this season’s tournament is .777 (83-21-8).

The four teams will first get together on Thursday, Dec. 30, for a pre-tournament banquet, before opening competition on Friday, Dec. 31, with the two semifinal contests. Manhattanville and Adrian will square off in the first semifinal contest at 1p.m., followed by the Norwich-Nichols clash at 4 p.m.

The third-place and championship games will be played on Saturday, Jan. 1, at 4 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively.

“We are thrilled to have entered into this agreement with Northfield Savings Bank,” said Norwich University president Richard Schneider. “It is wonderful that we have reached this sponsorship partnership with one of our local businesses. The Northfield Savings Bank has always been a friend of Norwich University, and this agreement will simply strengthen that bond.”

Re: The TBN tournament now has a name

More perennial than Nichols, anyway

Why is everyone knocking Adrien? I am be wrong but arn't they one of the top 3 teams in the West. I know they don't play many NCHA teams so it my be difficult to rate the team.

I didn't mean for it to be a knock on Adrian. i know they're a great team. I just find it amusing to hear the term "perennial power" applied to a 3rd-year program :p
