Norwich 2024-25-Is this the year it turns?

Another new year, with some new faces (on offense). This is a year of change, but will it be for the better?

I renewed my seats again, to see the new format/teams.

And-Congrats to Mike on his "Legends of Norwich" Lifetime Achievement Award!

The decay will be more pronounced this season. Look at the size and leagues of the six recruits. I’m told none has the talent and skill to immediately contribute.

I don't understand why the school continues to support Coach Ellsworth. He clearly doesn't care about being a member of this community and the town feels more disconnected to the team than it has in my living memory.

I have zero insight into anything Norwich related, but maybe the school is not supporting him in ways he needs? You see it all over D3. Schools are limiting team budgets because they are still recovering from Covid. Just a thought that its not the coach, but the school?

Some of this seems to be happening as we heard last year from other posters but this coach is making it worse by rejecting the community initiatives and partnerships that helped make Norwich so successful in the first place.

Looking at the recruits, it's clear that Elsworth is sticking to his guns on big guys only as 5 of 6 Freshmen are 6'2", 6'2", 6'3", 6'3" and 6'4". The last several years it was clear that team speed and quickness was not there for our big ice surface. It will be interesting to see if any of them can fly and are deceptive. Not holding my breath on that but anxious to watch the first game.

Funny because most of the 19 new faces in Oswego are smaller players.......

I’d like to hear from Flint as he’s close to the program. Flint, what say you?

Practice format has changed, putting offense before defense. Other than that, I don’t have much to say. I’ve given a lot of information about changes at Norwich that have affected/will affect all of athletics (particularly hockey) and no one wants to hear it. I also learned that players read this board and I wouldn’t want to post anything that they could take negatively.

The board wants to blame solely Cam no matter what “inside info” I share. Have at it.

Just remember that all coaches at Norwich were told, point blank, that winning isn’t the priority right now. Making up a financial deficit is. I told you zero aid for internationals and now six frosh, all Americans. I know, for a fact, that more than a couple of guys had Norwich as their top choice and went elsewhere due to finances. It is what it is.

I’m looking forward to the season.

Is Hockenbury defying Broadmeadow, who prioritized competitive sports during the most recent Town Hall? Want to solve NU’s matriculation and financial challenges? Develop winning programs in competitive conferences. Imagine the difficulty of recruiting football players following a likely winless season. One doesn’t need a Ph.D to figure that one out. HELLO, anyone at NU up and about and thinking?

Wanting winning teams, and understanding what it takes to achieve that, are two very different things. The financial aid situation is the worst it’s been in a very, very long time. If you actually wanted winning hockey teams, would you eliminate international aid?

Gen. Broadmeadow is a great man who, by his own admission, has a lot to learn about the commitment it takes to field winning sports teams.

The VP for enrollment (admissions and aid) is a MASSIVE problem for athletics.

it was refreshing to see Norwich play such an aggressive style of hockey against St Anselm's--hopefully this will continue

Really, all good in Northfield? No concern over scoring one goal against a no-name program in its fifth year? Where are the Ellsworth supporters to justify the performance?

Even the USCHO poll recognizes NU’s spiraling decline. When was the last time NU received an embarrassing 3 preseason votes? Talk about no confidence. Will the Administration really allow the program to go beyond rock bottom before taking appropriate action? This will make for a great essay one day. “The Rise and Fall of Norwich Men’s Hockey: How to Destroy a Once Marquee Program Overnight.” It will take years to restore the hockey community’s trust and confidence in NU. Talented prospective student-athletes will shy away until a tangible commitment is made to a turnaround. Even that may not prove enough.
