Norwich 14-15

Re: Norwich 14-15

So it is officially according to Castleton - can we decline and note somebody else has the job? Maybe they can see if St. Mike's wants to play :)

Why the hard-on for Castleton? I'm no fan of them either, but facts are facts. They will still have to make quantum leaps to reach the stature of of the other Universities in Vermont.

The fact is Norwich has another in state rival in Hockey that is more meaningful to most of us than Castleton. You know, the guys in blue :) I don't like them presuming that the rivalry is mutual. Certainly a secondary rivalry, but not a primary one.

Also, I don't like self aggrandizement, and them calling themselves a University for marketing purposes rubs me the wrong way. Other schools have done this too. (Neumann, Plymouth State, etc.) CSC is considered by US News and World report to be a Liberal Arts college.

Re: Norwich 14-15

Middlebury will always be our #1 rival for a lot of reasons, however, they are not ,(regretably), in our conference, ergo, the Spartans will have to assume that role. Personally, I want to beat Midd, Castleton, and Plattsburgh every time we play them, and the Purple Knights, too.

Rivals don't have to be in the same conference for it to be a rivalry. Until recently Army and Navy were not in the same conference. Notre Dame and USC are not in the same conference. Colorado and Colorado State are not in the same conference. It's more about playing each other frequently.

And the requirement that BOTH teams are skilled enough that anything less than being "on top of their game" will result in a significant loss.

Hard to imagine that for the first time since Ronald Reagan's presidency, Bill Beaney wont be leading the Panthers.

Re: Norwich 14-15

The rivalry question is a generational thing. I've talked about this before, but the fact that Norwich plays Middlebury on a regular basis only in hockey hurts the rivalry. In baseball, we played Castleton every year, celebrated like we won the World Series when we beat them my junior year (we didn't win very often), and they responded in kind the following year by running the score up on us. We hated each other. I know the football programs hate each other as well. We played Middlebury once, when I was a senior, and while I was aware of the historic rivalry of Norwich-Middlebury and while I embraced it, there was no animosity. For many of today's student-athletes, Castleton is the primary rival because every sport plays Castleton regularly. I guess you could divide it by sport, Middlebury being Norwich's hockey rival, Coast Guard being our historic (and future?) football rival, but in athletics as a whole Castleton is now the biggest rival. And that has an effect on the hockey rivalry as well.

Prez could you give us an idea when the hockey recruit list is going to be made public. Most of the fall school athletics are already on campus. Fans are excited about all the Western Canada recruits floating around on various list.

Another topic is Norwich interested in scheduling Dartmouth or USTR (or another Canadian U school) in future years since playing these teams is allowed by the NCAA. Some of the past games were some of the most exciting I have seen at Norwich.

Rooks are on campus. Civillians arrive later this week. I'll guess the list (and the 15-16 thread) will be out by Friday.

norwich is playing St. Jerome this year for its exhibition game. Same junior team that Shawn Baker played for.

Recruits list should be out this week or next week.

I guess the answer will come in a week or so but are the preseason games against Quebec Junior A teams resulting in Quebec players coming to Norwich. In the past Norwich has had a number of very good players come out of the Province such as Shawn Baker.

Students are back so this thread should close any time now.

And I see the SID is online. Could it be? ?

Re: Norwich 14-15

Prezde? Is the coaching staff holding the roster in a sealed mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnall's porch?
