Norwich 14-15

Re: Norwich 14-15

I didn't hear anyone complaining or making this argument years ago when Plattsburgh was having to play Potsdam 3 times.....

Norwich and Castleton would HAVE to face off once every 3 years.....if Potsdam put together a competitive team year in year out I doubt they would be replaced. The existing rivalry with Norwich and potential with Plattsburgh, coach Moff, in region combined with the co$t of bringing in another team I'll be shocked if something isn't worked out.

True, but it was Primelink's call and Potsdam was a New York school. What profit is there for Primelink in adding a third Vermont school?

How about this? T
The tournament rotates on a three year cycle bringing in an ECAC East team (Castleton or Babson?) a NESCAC school (Williams or Bowdoin?) and a SUNY school (Genny or OZ?)? Then you spread the conference opponent thing around while keeping it all East and keeping the quality of the visiting team at a high level.

Don't you want a patsy so the home team can make the finals? In other words, there is always the MASCAC.

What does Potsdam being a New York school have to do with it? Primelink has and is openly and aggressively attempting to expand into Vermont. What better place then Castleton? Glens Falls, NY region at that. It may have been Primelinks call, but if you don't think Trent was being nudged into replacing Potsdam by ALL 3 coaches you're mistaken.

While in theory it seems like a good idea, I don't see it happening. You are asking Oswego and Geneseo to give up two gimmie games versus say Salve Regina, Franklin Pierce, Curry, Hamilton, and or Connecticut College to travel nearly a 300 mile average to Vermont and NOT get a return trip? Not thinking so. Like I said, great in theory, not going to materialize.

Scenario #1 Keep Castleton - While no one had an issue when Plattsburgh was playing Potsdam 3 times a season, to keep you happy....

- On years Norwich hosts the Primelink, they get Castleton Friday night as an ECAC East Conference game....
- On years Castleton hosts the Primelink, they get Norwich Friday night as an ECAC East Conference game....

Castleton/Norwich tilts have been exciting. I'm sorry but a Norwich / Castleton Primelink Championship would be a great game. Emery vs. Moff for a Primelink Championship, which means you still get a Norwich Middlebury game earlier...and vice versa.... Part of me wants to just say "suck it up and deal with it, we did...." I still have a strong feeling you will see Castleton added. From a Primelink region sense, from a Emery/Moff sense (seeing how they've dropped Castleton from their schedule), from a respectable opponent, from a marketing standpoint, from a location standpoint. All of these positives and really only the "guaranteed 3rd game every 3 years" being the only negative.

But moving on from that one to ...

Scenario #2

While I was sitting here looking at the maps of DIII I noticed something.....

There is a team that is:
A) within an average of LESS than 200 miles from ALL three Primelink schools
B) a consistent Top 15 team
C) close to the Primelink network coverage area (or a potential expansion)
D) could easily host their own Primelink tournament
E) closer than the trips to Potsdam for both Middlebury and Norwich (so distance shouldn't be an issue)

While they don't like playing a lot of road games, they have played in both the Times Argus (Norwich) and Cardinal Classic (Plattsburgh) a couple times. A Primelink Tournament weekend could give a real big boost to their schedule and the opportunity to host a Primelink would make for arguably the best Primelink, ever. Who is it?

Plattsburgh...
Norwich...
Middlebury...
and
UTICA!!

While Castleton is my #1 choice, if something can't be worked out I hope they pursue Utica. I wonder how Heenan would feel about it? It is a little haul for the schools, but for Norwich and Middlebury its actually closer than what they were driving to Potsdam. The AUD > Maxy Hall (renovations and all).

Re: Norwich 14-15

Got to agree ... nothing against the Spartans but would Plattsburgh want another SUNYAC team in the event ... or Middlebury another NESCAC team? Don't think so.

Coach Moffat being there of course establishes a link but I just don't think it will happen.

Besides doesn't Primelink want to grow in it's service area? As far as I know that is not in Vermont.
Can't ever see any of the above ever happening. No SUNY, new Vermont teams added. The west is in unless there would be some unforeseen circumstance. That has always been the plan since Potsdam left.

This is not what I've been told recently. It's becoming to $$$ to keep bringing in the Western teams. Primelink (and the coaches) are looking for a new "permanent" alternative. Also, just as was the case with Potsdam, the "invitees" have done nothing (2-12). The home team has been given a "bye" in the first round

As far as Utica goes. While a loss to a Norwich/Plattsburgh/Middlebury may hurt their chances, a win would significantly help more then a win over Salve Regina. Utica's not going to go into the Primelink with a "what if we lose" attitude. That team can and would win Primelink Championships. If we are going to keep this "western" flow, at least bring in Adrian and St.Norbert.

I think the Utica idea makes sense ... four teams ... four different conferences ... and The Aud would be a great host location ... BOOK IT! :)

Re: Norwich 14-15

I definitely agree...but last year I was out of town and watched in a hotel and never had it buffer once....but are you sure it was Primelink last year ?? or did they use NSN ??

Last year (as always) it was Primelink. Maybe the electrons slow down as you get farther west, although NSN's seem to be okay...

Re: Norwich 14-15

Once every four years, yes. If Primelink wanted to go that route.. but it is obviously a long way for the other three schools to go so I'm not sure they would go along.

No, every year, this is Utica we are talking about

Hmm interesting you say that...and I go back to the reference of "You didn't have a problem when Potsdam was in the dance"....

Average distance for all three teams to travel to:
Utica: 196 miles
Potsdam: 160 miles

an average of 36 more miles is a lot to ask for....

Obviously Plattsburgh being just 90 miles away has something to do with that, but...

Average distance for Norwich/Middlebury to travel to:
Utica: 133 miles
Potsdam: 128 miles

They better pack another lunch and make sure the bathrooms are empty for those extra 5-10 miles they would have to travel....and no ferry ride...once every 4 years....

Travel budget were much more "full" when Potsdam was in the mix, far less so now.

Once every 4 years would be just killer on a budget like Norwich....

Correct me if im wrong but doesn't Primelink pay for or most of the "travel costs" of the traveling permanent teams? But yes, once every 4 years would just break teams.

FWIW
Average road trip mileage (round trip)
Norwich: 250
Plattsburgh: 456

Seeing how Utica has traveled to both the Cardinal Classic and Times Argus a few times EACH, (and a home and home with Castleton) traveling to said places shouldn't be an issue.

I made a comment about travel budgets when Potsdam was in the mix in response to your statement that travelling to Potsdam was never a problem when they were one of the four. But if you want to get all bent out of shape about it..... feel free.

By the way, the average additional distance for all three teams to travel now would be 196 more miles, not 36 (they haven't travelled to Potsdam in so long you cannot still use that distance for comparision).
