Northeastern Recruits

Re: Northeastern Recruits

Braden Pimm's Vernon Vipers repeated as Canadian Jr. A chamsp yesterday as they destroyed the host Dauphin team by a score of 8-1 yesterday. Pimm, the second line center who scored the winning goal in last year's final, will be a part of this year's incoming freshman class - even though he's only 6' tall.;)

Here's an article that appeared today about John Gaudreau, who is obliged to finish another year of high school before he can play at NU. He has grown an inch and added five pounds since he committed back in february. He's up to 5'7'', 140. Fear not for him as Cronin is planning to surround him guys who are at least 6 inches taller and have pledged to give their lives to protect him.;) ;)

Re: Northeastern Recruits

Sounds like we're doing a lot of recruiting for the next 2 classes from the USHL. So far all of our commits for 2011 and on will be in the USHL. I also liked how Gaudreau was compared to St Louis and Kane, hopefully he'll put up big numbers for Northeastern too. I definitely like the way the 2011 and 2012 recruiting classes are shaping up, things are looking up for the next few years.

Perhaps that will change. We have another skating basketball forward coming in '11. I suspect that Our coaches will direct him to either the USHL or to British Columbia for "finishing school".

Huskies Move Fast on Oskroba

6'6", 218 lb. Walpole Express (AJHL) LD Ben Oskroba has committed to Northeastern for the fall of '11.

Oskroba, back in January, had committed to Bentley College for the fall of '10. Recently, however, Bentley pushed him back a year, so the blueliner, who led the AJHL in goals this season, decided to put himself out there.

Northeastern knew nothing about him until this past weekend, when assistants Sebastien Laplante and Albie O'Connell saw him at the New England Pro-Am Pre-Draft Showcase, playing on the Mark Kumpel-coached Express team. They obviously liked what they saw, because they moved very fast on him.

Oskroba is an excellent skater for his size. That's the key to his game. He projects as a two-way defenseman who adds even more size to the Huskies' blue line, though not at the expense of mobility. He has a strong shot, which could be utilized on the power play.

In 42 games with the Express, Oskroba posted a 17-13-30 line with 78 pims.

A 8/4/90 birthdate, Oskroba grew up in Chicago until he was a bantam, at which time his family moved to Tempe, Arizona. Before coming to the Express, Oskroba played for the Phoenix Polar Bears Jr. A team in the Western States Hockey League. As a side note, Quinnipiac freshman forward Jeremy Langlois, who also came east to play juniors, was also on that team.

It has yet to be determined where Oskroba will play junior hockey next season.

Re: Northeastern Recruits

In the USHL futures draft yesterday, Jon Gillies was chosen in the 5th round by the Indiana Ice, 67th overall. He was the 3rd goalie to be chosen.

In the USHL draft today Ben Oskroba was picked in the 1st round, 15th overall by the Lincoln Stars.

Gaudreau already agreed to play with Dubuque for next year, joining them before the draft.

And although he's not committed, Mitch MacMillan's brother Mark was picked in the 9th round, 121st overall by the Lincoln Stars. Hopefully we can recruit him.

Other players committed to coming in the 2011 season weren't picked, and were presumably held onto by their current teams. They'll release their hold lists soon so we'll know soon enough.

Re: Northeastern Recruits

We were VERY close. The kid was here for a visit about two weeks ago. He went on vacation with his family to think about his choices. Going to NoDak ggives hm a chance to cut the cord and to step out of his his brother's big shadow. UND's pitch included things like men's hockey being the ONLY sport on campus that matters, the tradition, the well worn path to the NHL, the "Ralph" with its luxuries. These things mattered to the kid. Their pitch did not include things like a top quality education, exposure to a wide variety of cultural experiences or campus and local amenities - things that are of secondary importance (I'm being polite here) to an 18 year old hockey hotshot with stars in his eyes.

It seems that UND wants him for this fall. We wanted him for 2011. The feeling here was that at 6' 150 he would get bounced around the ice by experienced players with 50-60 lbs. on him. He skates around the periphery like Crazy Legs Hirsch used to run in the open field. His brother, Mitch has a completely different style of skating and is strong enough to camp out in front and get the "dirty" goals - lots of them.

FYI We've won recruiting battles with UND in the past. The most notable was Brad Theissen.

Inaccurate statement. He's not coming to UND this fall, he's coming in 2011. I don't know if you've seen UND's list of returnees, but the only thing he'd be seeing is the view from UND's press box if he was coming this fall, and I'd guess he knew that.

You are correct. I misinterpreted the Grand Forks Herald's use of the term "next fall" to mean the next fall season. That would actually be "this fall" in their dialect.
I couldn't understand why the Sioux would want him this year. If he isn't physically strong enough to play in Hockey East, the same would true for him in the WCHA.

BTW, What nickname will you be using this year? :(

Re: Northeastern Recruits

I've seen this guy play several times. He should be a great playmaker and PK guy for us. He'll also contribute off the ice. I've heard his personality described as being "one of a kind".:)

This is posted on the Vipers website:

Pimmer – mr. jokester and dr. hustle

by viper staff Added 2010-05-27

If you didn’t have the opportunity to see Braden Pimm play hockey, if you saw him only off the ice, you might be surprised by his intense passion for his chosen sport.

Away from the rink, or even relaxing in the team room, Braden Pimm is a younger version (he would say “much younger version”) of Bill Murray. His studied insouciance and devilish grin, together with his tendency to be “Brazen” Pimm, ready to do anything for a bit of fun, certainly have endeared him to his team mates.

Ask any Viper whom they will most miss on the bus trips and the informal team gatherings and “Pimmer” will immediately be named. Of course, the entertainment gene is treasured not just for its ability to relieve boredom; guys like Braden contribute a great deal to team morale. And his ability to selectively “goof around” is not forced behaviour; it is absolutely spontaneous.

Take for example, the May 11 celebration at City Hall. While the team stood on the stage with Mayor Lippert, Braden was up in a tree behind the stage. And last fall when the 2009 RBC rings were handed out, the players all enthusiastically shook the team owner’s hand, but Braden hugged Dr. Wray and proffered a friendly kiss.

On the ice, Dr. Hustle takes over. The wiry 6-footer not only skates well; he works hard in all areas of the ice. That’s one of the reasons he’s killed penalties all three years with the Vipers. His anticipation and ability to read the play have helped him score 7 short handed goals in his Viper career, including that important opening goal against Spruce Grove in the deciding game of this year’s Doyle Cup.

The secret to killing penalties, says Braden, “is having a really good partner. My first year, I paired with Bish (Hunter Bishop). It was all offence with him – block a shot, get the puck out, and he’d go get it! The last two years, Mike (Collins) and I have had good chemistry. I guess when it comes down to it, PK is mostly hard work, though.”

At 175 pounds, Braden’s not considered “big” by hockey standards, but he plays big, especially when playing defence deep in his zone and in laying forecheck hits on opposing defencemen. Despite this physical side to his game, he has been amazingly durable. He has missed only one game in three years of regular season and playoff hockey.

He started playing the game in his hometown of Fort St. John, but went to Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Saskatchewan to hone his game while in high school. There, he played with Kyle Bigos, among others.

He says his decision to come to Vernon was “the best decision [he] ever made. A really well-run franchise, great players and coaches, and a super place to live. Can’t go wrong there, Klepper!” He has especially fond words for owner Duncan Wray: “Nobody has more passion for the game and for winning, and nobody comes closer to a heart attack in the close games. He’s been really good to us, and I’m glad we could snag two RBC Cups for him.”

Braden attributes much of the success in the past two seasons to an especially tight-knit group of players. “Yeah, we called ourselves a band of brothers last year because that’s what we were and it just carried over to this year. We had so many guys back, and the new guys just fit in. I think we believed in each other. Going into the final game against Dauphin, we had a quiet confidence.”

He will carry that championship feeling with him to Northeastern University this fall. Actually, he’s going early. He will leave on July 7 for Boston, so that he can take a summer school class and prepare for his new role as a full-time student athlete.

He leaves with this piece of philosophy: “I like to have fun, but the most fun is winning and I’ll do just about anything for that feeling.”

Re: Northeastern Recruits

Coach Cronin saw Jamie Oleksiak play last September, again during the Christmas break and after NU’s season. He showed significant progress. He is 6 foot 7 and 230 pounds and he plays with an edge. Should take him time to adjust to HE play, but second half of the year should be a force. Could be a very high draft selection next June. Anthony Bietto is ready now. Similar to Jake Newton. Luke Eibler is a very talented player. No more D men under six feet unless they have great offensive talent. MacMillan and Reid have great shots but just average skating ability. Rob Dongara, a recruited walk on is the fastest skater to play for Cronin at NU. Could play on the fourth line. Looking forward to seeing Zak Stone, could be special. 18 Home games!
Daniels brothers have put on 20 pounds. Justin could score 30 points next year. Drew could be a skilled power forward; teammates call him the "Jewish Hammer" a tribute to his hard checking style.

Re: Northeastern Recruits

Oleksiak will be a high draft pick because of his size, skating etc. Far superior to Hall Gill at this age++
Where you are wrong is the playing with an edge. Very soft and not physical at all. When he does step up and hit, it usually was at the wrong time and on the boards, thus creating odd man situations. That is why Chicago and Steve Poapst traded him for basically a bag of pucks. Will be a good player but zero chance of being a force in second half. He is making the move to D 1 in hopes that it will elevate his draft status, which it might and of course, might not.
He is a hard worker, focussed and will be a solid pro but a couple years away from Hockey East. What kid who is still only 17 and has had that type of growth spurt etc is not?

Re: Northeastern Recruits

From USHR:
Northeastern has commitments from two big defensemen they had targeted --one for the fall of 2011 and the other for the fall 2012.

-- 6'2", 220 lb. LD Ryan Renz of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL), a big, hard-nosed, mean, physical defender.

-- 6'4", 230 lb. Mike McKee, an 8/17/93 birthdate from Newmarket, Ontario going into his junior year at the Kent School, has committed to the Huskies for the fall of 2012.

I would love to know where Waner gets his insight on the players....

Renz for example is 6'1" 200 LBS and had 4 penalty minutes in the 13 games he dresswed last year. Had 4 points in regular season. Did better in playoffs.

Just like he said Oleksiak was a tough, physical defender when in reality he is the exact opposite, plays or trys to play a finesse game.

FYI, not to rock the boat but the word out of the draft is that Cronin was very, very close to taking an assistant NHL job. My impression was it did not work out.

Oleksiak will be ready in a couple years, will not be a force second half. Was not top 4 on either of his USHL teams.

His is also not 6'7". He will though be a high draft pick next year. Could though fall to 3rd or 4th round if gets exposed in Hockey East, which he will. To young and not ready.

Re: Northeastern Recruits

Ha

Do you know who you're asking that question to? :p

His word is gospel

He didnt ask you moron, he asked me. Are you going to litter another thread with your scholl girl/sewing circle bs. Either add something or get lost

NU, had lunch today and was told first hand. My impression is that it didnt go far enough but sounded like it is a long term goal.

Re: Northeastern Recruits
