Before Cody's name can be shown on a roster, every "t" must be dotted and every "i" must be crossed.
Look for him to wear #79. IHNIY.

I think Cronin has begun to answer one of his critics' major questions. We saw early on that he could get good talent from non-traditional routes, mainly good players from the BCHL that were under-recruited. A year or so ago a lot of us were wondering if he would ever be able to tap into the more traditional areas of New England. Obviously going up against BU and BC in a recruiting war isnt easy but we are starting to see some victories over some bigger programs. It will be big to see these recruits come to campus, because, as we all know, the LOI doesnt mean anything until you actually start class. (Which is tomorrow for Cody )

I definitely like the increase in top New Englanders. In regards to Nathan, is he still growing? Cronin seems to want 6' and up defensemen, so I'm guessing he still has some height to add. Has anyone seen him play, does he have any offensive talent, or is he more of a shutdown defenseman?

Now lets see if he can start taking this talent and do something with it. No more out of the playoff finishes for NU. Last years end result was an embarrassment. Some drop off was to be expected, but to go from 2nd to 9th, especially when over the final two weeks you needed to pick up only 2 points in order to clinch a spot, and the best you can get is 1, and you were LEADING in two of those games, not good.
Can the man recruit, yes. Can he coach? Jury is out.

results based business. one great year so far, riding a top goalie. team plays more focused and generally better on the road, does not always show up at home in front of one of the best crowds in hockey east, has issues holding leads, and plays tighter and tighter the bigger the games get. Thats on the coach.

In fairness, you are only as good as your players, more so in college than other sports
Doc Rivers didnt get better at holding leads after Garnett and Allen showed up
Parker and York dont become bad coaches every few years when big turnover or early departures
Cronin can coach.

I would have to say that he can definitely coach. How has he done the last few years? I would say last year was the first time the team underperformed under his watch. He has produced more with less over the last few years. Look at 07-08 we were just under .500 with these lines:
McNeely (fr) - Vitale (jr) - Macleod (fr) 85 pts
Ginand (jr) - Silva (fr) - Russo (sr) 47 pts
Costello (so) - Rassey (jr) - Kreamer (so) 25 pts
McCauley (jr) - Costa (so) - Guzior (so) 47 pts
Donovan (so) 8 pts
How many of these players would have been expected to contribute on other teams? Only McNeely, Vitale, and Mcleod had more than one year of solid productivity. Ginand and Kreamer both had a solid season the following year. My point is our second third and fourth lines have not only been weak, but have been comprised of players who would have rarely dressed on other hockey east teams. Personel wise we are in the category of the Providences, Merrimacks, and UML's for the last few years. So what differentiates us and UML from MC and PC? I think utilizing the talent available has been the key, and that comes from coaching. With new recruits I think we can expect more solid lines in the coming years. Ultimately we are looking at the possibility of having multiple scoring lines, I know, its amazing.

He brought in alot of those guys. Kreamer, Costa, Rassey, Costello, Silva. So did he make a mistake with them?
Look, this is season 6, things have come along way. There is talent again this year. He needs to do something with it. Coaching is not all about the X's and O's. I am not 100% sure he gets everything across he wants and all the players buy in.

I think he gets everything across and the players buy in, I think the problem has been that his coaching philosophy is built for first half success. They play so physical and beat the hell out of the opponent and themselves in the first half of the year and by the time January rolls around we often have a lot of injuries and a lot of guys not producing the way they did in the beginning of the year.
I am hoping that with more skilled recruits we will be able to play with a hybrid of physicality and skill; a style that should hold up for the whole year.

I think (and suppose hope) that last year was a bit of a fluke, we had 2 players go down with season ending injuries in the first few games and a number of players were playing hurt, and with no depth to replace lost players we were unable to get much going. We played with only one top line center (Justin Daniels), and only during the 2nd half of the season did we have one solid line (McNeely-J. Daniels-Kraemer), and once that clicked there was a significant uptick in offense. This year and 2011 will be the years to watch, as Cronin will have a lot more depth, and he'll have more scoring potential on the 3rd and 4th lines (something we've lacked the last few years). If he can do something with that, get home ice, and possibly an NCAA bid he'll have proved himself in my book.
EDIT- another reason why the next few seasons will be important is because he'll finally have a coaching staff he himself chose. I think the assistant coaches are the reason we've managed to pick up some of these new top prospects, and if he can take that and run with it, it'll also look favorable for him.

Ludwig Karlsson has 2 assists in 2 games
Ben Oskroba has an assist in 5 games.

Ludwig Karlsson, a Northeastern recruit from Sweden, is a strong-up-and-down the wing pro-style player who had 29 points in 58 games last year. He's not a natural finisher, but is good in his role. He looks like a pro. RW.
Dubuque's top line of '93 LW John Gaudreau (Northeastern), '94 C Zemgus Girgensons (Vermont), and '90 RW Vinny Saponari has more pure talent than any line here, including the U.S. Under-18 Team. When they are on the ice, all eyes are on them. But in the third period, Gaudreau stayed out too long on a shift and Montgomery benched him for the rest of the game and the shootout. Gaudreau might have made the difference between winning and losing, but Montgomery's message was clear: he's going to be running a tight ship.
