Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Well so far finishing up the Manson deal and getting Manno to stay out of the QMJHL are good signs. I saw Madigan and Foley yesterday. Keefe is out recruiting right now. Good to hear.

From what I've heard, Sebastien recruited Manson before he left, and Manno was interested in us previously, but we didn't have any money to give him. After our recent defections, the situation changed and he came here. As I see it, Manson and Manno are more of a result of the previous regime than the current one. I will reserve judgment on the current coaches' recruiting ability until next year's class.

I'd agree with that, though Manno had interest from other schools so I think Madigan did some recruiting in that aspect.

Split-N: That was the other part of my point, which is that it's easy for Madigan to learn about the Hockey East coaches, because he can access video, talk to his players, and likely has connections to non-Hockey East coaches that'll allow him to understand their system's and tendencies. And even though he was a scout here, I have to imagine even watching individual players you can get a decent understanding of a coaches gameplan. Even Leaman and Bazin can be looked into by the other coaches, as they've been in head coaching positions before, but Madigan is an unknown quantity.

As for the Assistant Coaches, I really like their recruiting credentials (lots of connections to USA Hockey), but i'm taking a wait and see attitude toward their coaching abilities.

I'm glad that Keefe is already out there recruiting for us, I hope we really hit the ground running with recruits.

Which is why I said finishing up the Manson deal. And regardless, Manno could've easily played near his native Montreal in the QMJHL for Saint John. And the prior regime is irrelevant since they are all gone so it was a good job convincing them to stay with a different coaching staff.

Your getting a little out there...

Any games he went to watch had zero to do with X's and O's. To simply make an apearance, watch a few kids and send a report in on their specific play. I would bet 50 to 1 that if you set every Hockey east coach down and intervied them for 2 hours on the other Hockey East coaches and their tendancies etc, he would be in dead last, outside maybe the 2 new coaches. Even those two have probably watched more game film and are well aware of their styles. Zero chance he knows more than the other 8 and even less than that in regards to him knowing more about them than they do themselves.

I agree. There are a lot of things to point out on the original premise. Coaches aren't running one system and aren't running it all game long. Even with that assumption that they were, the advantage lasts a few games, tape gets out of NU and the advantage goes away quickly. But you see multiple systems, some fit to personnel, which changes annually, and they can change from period to period and sometimes even during the period.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

That means different things to folks of different ages.;) Can you be more specific?

LOL. I legitimately laughed. He definitely grew a few inches and put on some muscle. He has definitely been in the gym. I couldn't tell what hat he was wearing but he was wearing a backwards hat.

The Dong got bigger without any special medicine??? ;)

I haven't posted in a while but I am very encouraged by the Manson and Manno signings. Sounds like they will both be productive players and Madigan knows what he is doing. Goaltending and defense seem to be the strengths of the team going in. I predict that our two most important players next year are Pimm and Ferriero. Both have tremendous talent but need to put up points if we are going to be successful.

I think Quailer and Saponari are the keys. They will carry the load offensively, hopefully anyway. Everyone else can chip in 10-15. Dongara is my sleeper pick for a "breakout" season.

Agreed, Quailer and Saponari need to produce a ton for us to have any sort of good chance this year. I'd be happy if Dongara improves upon his performance last year, I think there are some doubters as to whether he can do better (plus, always great to see a guy who's wanted to come to NU and turned down better offers to come here do well).

Well Saponari has point production at this level and Quailer has been a force in HE, albeit without fantastic stats. I'm assuming that they will be two of the top 20 forwards in Hockey East next year (hopefully I'm right). In my opinion, its going to be the second tier guys that determine how much success we have. Ferriero, JDaniels, Pimm, Dongara, Tuckerman, McLaughlin, Veermesch and even Reid need to produce a lot more than our secondary forwards produced last year. It'd be nice if a couple of them were up in the 20-25 area.

With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if Bitetto was top 3 in points, challenging Saponari and Quail for the point lead. I am really excited to watch him this year and I'm optimistic he could be the 2nd best d-man in HE behind Dumulion

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

The team has a litany of players who need to show they are legitimate first and second liners. JDan for one, Vermeesch as well. Will the 27 point Tuckerman show up? Or the 12 point Tuckerman? Love his effort, but we will need production badly next year. Yah, Pimm and Ferreiro need to improve and should. Same with Dongara but none of those now sophmores have shown top line level play yet so anything better than last year's production is all we should hope for. Quail played great last year from the games I went to. I'd guess he won 80% of his board battles. Lack of point production wasn't his fault.

I'm hopefull but we could end up on the short-side of a lot of 1-0 and 2-1 games if many players don't step up a level. If Tuckerman is healthy I'd love to see him and Quailer back together again. Should at least get 20 points plus from both of them.

My fingers are crossed but with such a short time from initial practices to first games, it might be a steep curve if Madigan changes to a system the team isn't used to playing.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

I have to say, before Cronin left and all this stuff went down I was very hesitant about playing an exhibition against this Canadian school, but with all the changes and new staff I think it's a much needed chance for everyone to get their feet wet and prepare themselves for league games that happen the next weekend.

I'm hopeful all our juniors will step up and start producing like we intended them to do. If not, we could have one good line trying to carry the whole team.

Agreed on Bitetto though, excited to see his progression.
