Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

According to Judd Brackett (Scout for the Vancouver Canucks and Indiana Ice) "Jim Madigan has hired Jerry Keefe (Brown) and Patrick Foley (Harvard) as his two assistant coaches."

Thanks for the information. UNH guys are just fine with me. Anyone who is a three year captain must have a lot on the ball. IIRC Foley was a big-time recruit who had all kinds of injury problems. Am I correct?

UNH fans who were around during the playoff runs in the early 2000's remember Patrick Foley as a very special player - one of the greatest character guys to play in Durham. Yes, he was drafted by Pittsburgh, then struggled with serious injuries but kept battling back and was UNH Captain for three years. His coaching and recruiting experience at the US National Team Development Program is impressive. At Harvard, he coached the defensemen and special teams and was part of a coaching staff that attracted some top prospects (e.g., Louis Leblanc, Danny Biega, and future recruits Patrick McNally and Brian Hart). Overall, a very bright guy who has also been involved in charity work for years. Someday, I would like to see him return as a coach for UNH. This move to NU will certainly help bolster his experience and resume.

That was me that replied to one of his earlier tweets, trying to get him to talk some sense into his buddy!

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Well, that didn't take anywhere near as long as I was afraid it might. I'm also happy with who they hired. Foley threw himself into coaching pretty quickly and has covered a lot of ground. Keefe's resume isn't as varied as Foley's, but I like his pedigree. My concern about having a recognizable "Face of NU" in the recruiting world isn't an issue. Well done. It is almost like we traded O'Connell for Foley, though, isn't it?

On his way to Saint John, as the CHL continues its decimation of college hockey this summer.

Decimation is an appropriate word. Poaching by the majors is nothing new but I have never ever seen it this widespread or purposeful. Actually, it gives the appearance of being an organized effort, at least among the OHL teams. Frustrating thing is there's really nothing the colleges can do about it.

Also, part of the problem is that all of these so-called blue chip recruits have advisors, and some of those advisors give some really stupid advice.

Do the "advisors" - many of whom are employees of sports management agencies - also have a financial incentive to guide their amateur clients to Canadian Major Juniors? The advisors are probably hoping that they will become the professional agent once the player turns professional. If the advisor believes the quickest route to the NHL/AHL is to play major junior, it stands to reason that they would steer the recruit in that direction. If it means they start earning more money from the player sooner, so much the better.

Did you mean to ask and answer your own question? In the U.S. it's called "follow the Benjamins". Perhaps the advice given in in Canada should be called "follow the Loonies"!

Unfair advantage! Conflict of interest!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Saw this article a few days ago: (http://www.annarbor.com/sports/john-gibson-de-commits-from-michigan-hockey-team-will-turn-pro/).
In it, the reporter for annarbor.com explains that Michigan has lost their last two, top goalie recruits to major juniors. He mentions that both recruits were represented by the same advisor/agent - Kurt Overhardt (http://www.kosportsinc.com/kurt.html).
While some agents tend to guide their clients to major juniors, others - such as Alec Schall, who represents a number of potential, current and former NCAA players including JvR - are less likely to. I guess it all depends on the player's individual circumstances but the advisors obviously have influence.

You make a couple of good points. There really hasn't been much discussion anywhere in the hockey world about the inherent conflicts of interest many of the so-called advisors have, so that might be a good topic for a separate thread.

Fact of the matter is that only a small fraction of the combined pool of college/major jr players will ever see meaningful playing time in the NHL or AHL. Another fraction will make it to the ECHL/CHL/SPHL or whatever else is out there but life in those leagues isn't much fun and doesn't lead to personal glory and financial security. I think we can all agree that the great majority of kids at the college/major jr. crossroads now and in the future will need to give some thought to life after hockey. Very few of them will on their own, and that's where advisors who have the player's overall best interests in mind need to step in. Most of the kids have stars in their eyes and most of the parents are seeing dollar signs. The advisors are really the only ones who can nudge them toward reality. Some do, but I'm afraid they're the exceptions.

BTW, what's the difference between an advisor and an agent?

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

A signed contract.
Yes, but $$$ is supposedly being passed under the table, at least in some cases. One of these days, some spurned advisor will go to court alleging breach of a verbal contract, and the food fight will be on.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Wasn't College Hockey, Inc. formed for the purpose of educating student/athletes on the benefits of playing college hockey vs. juniors.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Sounds eerily similar to Town Hockey & the (AAA) travel teams... kids are supposed to play town, make friends, develop, the USA hockey mantra, blah blah.. but the best end up going the AAA route. Its a money making factory there as well. Just look at the number of clubs around this area. Sure you'll get good kiddies come out of town programs but the bulk of the kiddie stars :) .. still at the AAA/ travel level.

College Hockey Inc needs to get some turf back.. just like the town programs need to get their act together.

Bertagna.. anyone.. listening?..

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Well, with Gaudreau no surprise, going to BC, are there any other last minutes rabbits we are going to attempt to pull besides Manson?

Also, Haar, lol, guess you weren't good enough for BC to pull the stops for.
