Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Nice to see Madigan's already earning his keep with Manson. The BCHL is admittedly a secondary league in comparison to USHL, but a lot of good Canadian kids who would put good numbers in the USHL are in the BCHL instead. Another offensive defenseman is always great to see, and makes me worry less about defense this year.

Incidentally, we replaced a 3rd to last draft pick on defense with a 6th rounder, take that for what it's worth

Good pick up. It might be considered a secondary league by the masses but not by the college coaches. Very good league and has put out a ton of high end D 1 players as of late. Hockey East was littered with them last year. Collins, Bigos, Santana, Gill just a few.

Chad Galloway was from there as was Beau Bernnett.

Good players are good players.

Give credit where credit is due. Sebastien did the work here. He was the entire coaching staff for nearly six weeks until last Tuesday.

I don't know why but I feel like this whole Gaudreau thing has just as much to do with him getting drafted higher than expected as it does with Cronin leaving. Funny how some kids let the whole getting drafted thing get to their heads.

Hokydad....Is this out of the blue? Nobody else has posted so as usual it's your scoop. Sebastien is leaving! Is this rumor or does it score high on your truth meter? And pardon my ignorance...what's in Houston?

PS Edit: Could this be one of the reasons Gaudreau is making trips all over Hockey East....sure seems like he won't becoming to NU...I mean...UNH, Vermont, BC, BU....At least, only a one in five chance!

I thought I remembered Cronin saying he'd go 4th round at the Friends of NU Hockey meeting.

I was wondering the same thing...then I went to their website and realized the Houston Aeros don't have an assistant coach listed. Hokydad, what you got for us?

This is no scoop. Seb told several people that he was close to several days ago. I Hokydad is among them, he was politely asked NOT to post anything until things were settled and there was a formal announcement. Nice goin', Hokdope! I feel fortunate that you don't have my name and social security number.

Canada1, if there is an announcement, you'll have the answer to your question. If not, pose the question on http://dieharddogs.com. We'll fill you in. I hope you've already checked out and joined. Also visit http://FriendsofNUhockey.com. We'd love to have you join and, if you're in the area on September 8, join us for our golf outing. You'll have a great chance to meet the coaches, players, and some slumni whose names you will recognize. I don't expect Hokypal to be there, but I expect that he'll post a summary of everything that was said.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

LaPlante's exit bothers me more than anything else has in this episode. I felt that at long as LaPlante stayed on in some capacity, then NU had a known ambassador out in the recruiting world. With LaPlante doing the leg-work and Madigan selling the school, I was OK with the turnover. Sure, there would be some effect felt on the recruiting trail, but at least NU would have someone "known" out there. Now, a whole new staff? I think that really puts NU at a disadvantage in recruiting. How long will it take Madigan to overcome this? Oy!

There are plenty of folks who know their way in the recruiting world. Given his scouting experience, JM probably has relationships with many of them. You may rest assured that he will draw on those contacts as he creates his staff. The short term may be a bit chaotic, but he will soon have the right people in place.

The problem as I see it is that Madigan is probably great at selling NU, but cannot sell himself as a coach or a developer of talent since he does not have that piece. Sebastian did, so that helped, but with Sebastian leaving, Madigan is now going to have to have a really good season, no not making the playoffs for instance, to prove he has the chops behind the bench.

It would also help him to find an assistant who can help there. As for recruiting, the guy has been a scout for a long time, so identifying talent should not be an issue. Getting them to come, until he proves he can win behind the bench will be an issue.

G'luck LaPlante, perhaps we meet again.

I wonder if, as he creates his staff, he will find that it is just too close to the season for many would-be applicants to consider applying at this time. Will the University's process for hiring the assistants take as much time as the hiring of the HC did? That would put the hiring of the AC's near Labor Day. Am I wrong to think that this might be a lost year or two on the recruiting trail? How long is "short term"? My concern isn't with JM - my concern is that right now, there is no "Face of NU" for recruits to identify with.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

To me, Sebastien leaving is the worst thing that has come from this offseason. I was confident in the Madigan/LaPlante tandem, but now I'm worried. I wonder if there is more to the story here...aren't Sebastien and Jim supposed to be good friends? I would think that having your boss be a good friend would be a good working situation. It's not like Sebastien would have been head coach if Cronin didn't leave, so why does he want to leave now?

Any word on candidates for the vacant assistant coach positions??
