Northeastern Huskies 2023-24: Brave New World or New Beginning?

was this game televised? I couldn’t find a link on either team’s website. Tomorrow, we overlap with the last hour of then giants-patriots game. Oh, what a dilemma!?!

espn+ Dilemma? Pats suck and so do the Giants. We are better off losing that game.

Grateful for and enthusiastic about the sudden goal scoring binge but the giddiness has to be tempered by the fact that they couldn't get more than a tie vs the same bottom feeder team on Saturday.

The glass-half-full side of me says nice to see Alex Campbell finally contributing in a significant way along with Jack Williams and Matt Choupani apparently overcoming whatever injuries had limited them. But the glass-half-empty side says they now need to deal with the likes of the Comm Ave Axis, QPac, Wisconsin, and Minnesota Duluth if they are to climb out of the hole.

Still, the one-sided win was desperately needed if only to exorcise whatever confidence demons might have been hanging around. A baby step but better than another step back.

This would have been the one weekend for me to travel to watch the boys play hockey in person. I'm a little over an hour from lovely, scenic (LOL) Troy, NY. However, an illness over the past couple of weeks has forced to stream instead. It sure was nice seeing the barrage of scoring on Sunday knowing this won't happen again anytime soon. While the Huskies will be a last place team in Hockey East, they would still host a home playoff game in March if it were in the ECAC.

I'm not optimistic at all. Of the 9 goals hung on RPI in the 1st two periods many were on a cold goal tender who hasn't played in a game since last Spring. None of the scoring was overly impressive and many of the shots potted were seeing eye dog deflections or off huge rebounds, that top goalies won't be giving up. I'm not convinced anything has abruptly changed. RPI is absolutely horrible so let's see how they play at BC this weekend and thru Dec.tournment. I only see a win at Brown.

Miller is RPI's third stringer. The supposedly top goalie is out injured.

This just in, the Devon Levi experiment in Buffalo has ended. A struggling Devon Levi has been sent down to Rochester. Buffalo has been carrying 3 goalies and all have been vying for play time. He's been getting lit up in the NHL with an abysmal .865 save percentage. I am kind of thinking he might be wishing he had stayed an extra year with NU to gain more exp. Granted he played well for Buffalo thru a few games at the end of last season. However since an early injury this season he's not been good. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen the 24 year old from Finland has been lights out. He spent a few years in Rochester and wasn't as thrown to the wolves as Levi was. Good luck to Devon

Unfortunately I don’t think Levi staying in the NHL was high on anyone’s list of expected outcomes. While another year with us would have been nice, experience in the AHL would probably be better for him at this point.

While all those goals may have been against a weak team I’m still hoping it gives a little confidence going in to a weekend vs #1. Hopefully we see some competitive games, enjoyable hockey, and great attendance.

Well that may have been their best period this season. Fore checking like their Mother's life depended on it. It's early though. However it's been all BC since.

All is forgiven!!!!!!!!!

LOL..Cam Lund must have been hurt or dealing with something earlier this season because from my seat at Conte, he was the best player on the ice tonight. Great team win and Whitehead finally made some great saves. Team D was top notch. Just wish we had scoring depth and we really don't. However we moved from 48 to 25 in the Pairwise in 6 days. So a win home at the barn can really put us back in it!

Any word on why Borgesi didn't play? Injury list rearing its ugly head again? On the bright side, NU Hockey Blog is reporting that Hunter McDonald is back on the ice at practices.

No knowledge on borgesi’s injury except he is supposed to be back next weekend.

the score line doesn’t show it but I thought we were thoroughly outplayed all game. Unlike Friday we really struggled to get the puck out of our own zone. Opposing teams are easily able to anticipate where the clearing pass is going to be and get sticks on it. We are also incapable of keeping the puck in the offensive zone. Multiple dribbles over sticks and even whiffed passes that angled out over the blue line last night. Really unacceptable. If I were keefe id be hammering these basic details. The team just looks like they think they are too skilled to have to make sure the basics are executed well. The one thing we did mostly well is clean up whiteheads rebounds. But I’ll caveat that with how scrambly it looked and lack of composure frequently led to BC possession.

That said a split is more than I hoped for going into the weekend and we saw maybe 60 minutes of really enjoyable hockey out of the two games and that’s really what I’m here for.

I feel like the last two weekends, the team started to build some confidence back. They had a lot more offensive zone time than a few weeks ago. They're competing harder - the workrate, physicality, forechecking. Fowler made a few big stops and BC pounced on a couple mistakes. Good teams will do that. Whitehead is okay and will just get better with games. I'm a lot more optimistic than I was a couple weeks ago.

Well, a weekend split with the reigning #1 isn't the worst thing that could have happened given the way the season has panned out so far. A few observations--
  • Friday night was no fluke. NU deserved the win. Got BC back on its heels in the first period with tape-to-tape passes and a relentless forecheck. Got pushed around in the second as BC adjusted but more than held their own in the third. Whitehead absolutely got hung out to dry on the shorty. That kind of defensive screw-up just can't happen.
  • OTOH, BC clearly deserved the Saturday win for all of the reasons OP laid out above. The sharp passing seen at Conte was nowhere to be seen at Matthews as the guys in white seemingly reacted to any puck coming their way as though it were radioactive. Flubbed passes, fanned-on passes, misplayed passes, passes to nowhere, and passes to guys wearing maroon. Too many cough-ups when a BC guy got anywhere near a puck carrier. Results: DZone turnovers and few sustained OZone possessions. On the positive side, depth players Nolan Hayes and Billy Norcross got my attention while Cam Whitehead probably played well enough to beat most other teams.
But now it's out of the frying pan and into the fire with Duluth and Wisco on the horizon. Clean up the puck possession issues, and they should be able to hang in.

I, too, am perfectly happy with this past weekend. Forwards are healthy. Still miss McDonald and now Borgesi but Hayes, Doyle and Fisher stepped up. Norcross should stay in the lineup, too. Saturday night wasn't as good as Friday but BC isn't where they are for no good reason. Two of the BC goals were quick as cobra strikes. The team I saw this weekend can make up some ground in the second half.

For those who might have been on another planet Thursday eve, Dylan Levi did Dylan Levi things in beating the B's at the Gahden. Would have been as shutout if not for a deflection off a shinpad.

And speaking of old friends, NU at Brown tonight, where Ryan St. Louis is running a 9-3-12 line.

Edit: NU goalie (Levi - BUF) vs NU goalie (Primeau - MTL) tonight. When's the last time that happened?

Khalin Kapoor on X: Per Keefe postgame, “expecting” Lund and Dorrington back after the break, “hopeful” on McDonald and not expecting Demelis for Dec 28.
