Northeastern Huskies 2019-20: Reloaded...and Still in Love with Stacy's Mom

If you went there for Celtics games, it was either back in the '40s when they played at what is now Matthews Arena, or you had a very long walk to the Boston Garden. But getting back to the now defunct watering hole, it was known in various incarnations as the Lobster Claw, Nick's, Jim Plunkett's (the then-Pats QB had a piece of it), Huskies, and probably a few other things before Uno's found a way to turn a silk purse into sow's ear.

To watch.... sports bar baby!!! Mookie was in the hood late 80s

and none of those names rings a bell

;)
Oooooh! You're so old

Mookie is older than dirt (to which he bears a striking resemblance););)

The bar was known as The Lobster Claw in September 1964, when I first tried to patronize it. That was the day I learned of the strange law that Required me to be 21. Coming from NY, it never occurred to me that such a condition could exist!

Maybe you should have left your loillipop back at the dorm:D. I first bellied up to the bar at the Claw two weeks into my college career and didn't get carded that time or any other time. Don't know of anyone else who ever got carded either. Times sure did change.

Some Lobster Claw Jeopardy: The first name of the African-American bartender universally beloved by both NU students and BSO musicians of the day.

(BTW, Mookie is OK in my book. A little strange, but good for a chuckle now and then.)

I can agree with you about Mookie. His sense of humor indicates lots and lots of OTB thinking.
As for being served at the “Claw”, I was just 17 and looked younger. OTOH, I bet you walked in and ordered just as soon as you got your ROTC uni. How could they not serve a future officer? :>}

Sad news indeed. Leo was a classmate although I didn't know him on beyond a "Hi, how ah yah" basis. Very impressive numbers considering the number of games played (freshmen couldn't play varsity in that era) and the fact that he played on less-than-stellar teams. But he left the world a better place for his efforts both on and off the ice.

J...Strange year indeed & this forum too is not the same. Not sure how much longer or often i'll continue posting...Stay safe all.

I'm with you on this. The "new look" just seems klunky to use and overall not as user-friendly. But yeah, stay safe and see you for the delayed season start.

May I recommend migrating over to dieharddogs.com if you haven't already? Pretty quiet there with currently, but plenty of posting during the season

You're absolutely right about DHD being a lively and informative forum for all things Northeastern sports (even football)! I'll stay on here to get a flavor for what's happening in the broader college hockey world. So two different purposes.

But both platforms have a problem in attracting new users given that the millennials and GenZ tend to regard posting to message boards as something akin to scratching things into clay tablets.

It's almost November and I am really kind of lost. I have been coaching Town C since late August, no games just practice and scrimmage for 2 months and its been fun to keep my mind off of the reality of this what soon will be a lost season. The fact is I really don't see a delayed season at this point. I am thinking no season as Winter turns into Spring. Anyway, I hope you are all safe and healthy and are working from the comfort of your homes. By now our Huskies would have been maybe 3 and 0 and sitting in 1st place atop Hockey East. I have a sinking feeling, that we don't get back to the old barn until the Fall of 2021. Cheers!

If the source of your gloom is the Mass. edict closing all ice rinks for the next few weeks, you can cheer up just a bit as the directive doesn't apply to colleges. But I very much share your concern as the numbers are clearly trending in the wrong direction.

Although the pre-season prognostications I've read have NU finishing in the middle tier, I can see them giving BC a run for the top if 1) The Young Turks i.e., Colangelo, Gunnarwolfe, and the Jacksons can produce up front to balance out what should be a veteran shut-down defense, and 2) Devon Levi can bring to the college game the abilities he had in Canadian junior.

Hoping and praying we get to see it. And BTW, NU has officially announced (to nobody's surprise) that no spectators will be allowed at Matthews in 2020. Will reconsider for 2021 based on the public health situation.

Yes, this is the source of my gloom. That, and the fact that I received a robo call last night form the Commonwealth asking me to curfew between 10pm and 5am. As a result, I don't see a season possible until late Spring based on the trends I see. I am fairly certain that Hockey even in it's best years, is a break even proposition at NU. Much of HE operates at a loss when thin budgets and little revenue derived from anything other that ticket sales and alumni and fan contributions are the only thing to fuel the tinder boxes. As a result of COVID these have pretty much dried up. I just don't see even a Big10 style start. I hope I am wrong but we are fast approaching Thanksgiving.

I had planned to put up a 2020-21 thread later today or maybe tomorrow but that's on hold for the time being as NU has paused all winter sports through Dec. 18. Apparently, some "small" outbreaks and quarantining involving men's and women's basketball & track, plus several women's teams, including hockey. Nothing involving men's hockey. So collateral damage there.

Very frustrating considering NU, as of this morning, is running an institution-wide positivity rate of only .19%, which is remarkable considering the size of university population and its location in the middle of a city that's running at ~10% positivity.
