Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

If Benning is withdrawing from school to become a free agent, he's a bigger dumb ***** then I thought. He will never plat in the NHL. Maybe he gets a few games in the AHL but from there it's ECHL.
I just don't get why he would leave. Stay one more year and get your degree and enjoy playing coffee hockey.
There has to be more to the story. He seemed to me to be a bright kid.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

$$$$$$$$$$$$$, maybe?

I think that's about a dozen too many dollar signs. Should be more like $.

Look, this is a bad decision by a kid who got bad advice, nothing more. He was treated like royalty at NU and he was a mediocre player, at best. He should have taken another $60,000+ in scholarship funds from NU and obtained his degree. From all accounts, he is a smart kid who is well-liked by the players and coaches. He could have had excellent job prospects following his pro hockey career if he had stayed another year at NU with a C on his chest. He played pretty good down the stretch, though he still was beaten to pucks too often and flubbed too many passes. But let's not forget how he looked during the first 10 games of the season. It was a brutal stretch where he honestly did not look like he belonged on a Division 1 team. I don't see how the Bruins can forget that stretch, since they came to a lot of those games. The HE Championship run was a great thing - but films of those first 10 games still exist. Good luck to him.

He's going to get max bonus as well as max salary at both levels. He'll finish most of his degree this Summer and then either complete it online or Summer 2017.

As for advice, he's with one of the best in the biz and an NHL level exec has decided that he's going to get MB's John Hancock on a contract. In other words, guys in the business disagree with you.

Guys in the biz are all family. Gonna be nice to get a fat check for being average.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

As a college defenseman I'd put him on par with what Kevan Miller was at UVM. I would have said coming out of school no way Miller ever plays in the NHL (some argue he still shouldn't). I don't think MB is a future NHL defenseman but crazier things have happened. Good luck to him.

I think it's a bigger deal for NU that ZAR is coming back and Filipe is coming in.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Although I don't think Bennington is ready for pro hockey, I do think he was a very good college player who would have helped the Huskies next yea and probably improved his game. I have no idea on how pro contracts work, so if there is "big" money on the table, I completely understand it would be hard to turn down. Who knows the financial situation of his family. Good luck to him if he doesn't return. I thought he carried himself well on the ice.
OBTW, if we want him back, someone show tape of the OT loss two years ago to the bruins front office
:-)

92k bonus 70K AHL salary 935k NHL salary.

NHL personnel have enough offspring and nephews to fill the league twice over...so...so what if he has family? The Stevens boys have a father coaching and neither of them was drafted...

As for showing tape of Benning why not show the OT tape from this year?

Sure. Outside of the rare superstars, hockey at every level is about who you know and what your family lineage is. Junior rosters, college rosters, pro rosters are all tainted with inexplicable players until you look at their family backgrounds. Its comical how they take care of their own. And actually before the Stevens ever left LA it was never a question as to whether they were going to play pro hockey. Pretty tough for them to fail when they were Annointed every opportunity available in every circumstance possible at NU

You sound both bitter and jealous of the brothers' success this year. Do you think Nolan improved enough and scored 21 goals this season because he got extra ice time? Or because his dad coaches LA he knows some Kings players? Do you think John is not deserving of the captaincy ? If so, please share your reasoning with us. Perhaps the rest of us missed something along the way.

Connection=opportunity, ice time, special teams= Career advancement Fact

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Do you really believe that Player A is signed and advanced over BETTER Player B because of connections?

You sound very bitter.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Jason Smith was in Cedar Rapids both Friday and Saturday night to watch Jeremy Davies and Matt Filipe.

The Stevens boys played Youth in the Philly area and were dominant players in their age group. John then went to Dubuque in the USHL and played for Jim Montgomery and Nolan played at NTDP. Their home is in New Jersey. Perhaps you missed the photo of them posing with the Stanley Cup on the beach in New jersey?

Fascinating.

Is there a further point that you may have omitted?

I heard Keefer took the family to Sizzler and Madigan took advantage of the weather and cooked burgers and dogs on his grill.

Film at 11.

There's a good chance that Benning may have left because Jason Smith appears to be somewhat clueless about coaching Defense. The Defense was glaringly deficient in several aspects of Hockey 101. You had one player make the same mistake over the course of several games throughout the entire season, most notably in the second game versus BC which ended up costing them a game that they most deserved to win. You had another D whose routine plays were to either hook the opposing playerc, e.g. v Lowell, or stand still with his stick on his hips, e.g. every game. Normally, it would be a good thing that he's left but when you look at both the depth chart and how the D is being coached you have to wonder. The D constantly held the puck too long on the breakout/regroup and they continually forced the puck in to traffic and let's not even get in to the fact that clearing the front of the net was totally out of the question for most of them. IN fact, the only two defensemen who had a modicum of hockey sense have both left - Benning and Darou. So, maybe Smith is in Cedar Rapids as part of a general relocation. We can only hope.

If there is any loss over the last 3 seasons that caused a gaping hole it was the departure of Coach Foley.
