Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

I don't think that happens unless the Bruins make it really sweet.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Twitter is suggesting Benning is signing with the Bruins.

The Bruins' crying need is for one or more experienced, proven defensemen. Benning wouldn't fill that particular bill but he could very well be packaged in a deal that would trade youthful prospects for said proven defenseman/men.

Garrett Cecere. former Colorado College player, went back to juniors and was previously committed to SLU.

He could have followed Carvel to UmaSS, but he only has two years to play. Apparently he didn't wish to be part of a "rebuilding" effort. After playing at CC for the past two years, who could blame him for wanting to be part of a program with good prospects?

Hearing Northeastern junior D Matt Benning is close to signing contract with Boston Bruins. Frees up scholarship for Matt Filipe for 16-17.

Thanks, these move make my head spin. I thought these types of transfers had to spend a certain amount of time enrolled and attending classes prior to game elegibility???

At a reported 5' 8" and 165 lbs, he is not very big for a defenseman.

I found myself standing next to Benning on a 21-floor elevator ride in Cincinnati a couple of weeks ago. I'm 5-8, 165. Benning was several inches taller with a solid, muscular build. I was surprised as just how big he actually was.

2016-2017 Captains:

C- JStevens
A- NStevens
A- ZAR
A- Collier

JM is on a roll lately. He got this one right too.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Other announcements from the banquet are that ZAR will officially be returning for his senior season while Matt Benning will be moving on to the next level.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

I got to say that I am shocked on Benning. I don't see him as an NHL defenseman? This is very shocking to me. Bothers me on 2 fronts, he is leaving NU and going to Bruins. I don't see him ever making it, bad move on both fronts.

Agreed. Not even close, must be related to someone.

Apparently his rights expire on 6/1, so he would be a UFA. He told me he wasn't set on Boston and he is also 4 classes from his degree. So maybe he thought the time was right and he can purse his dream while working online towards his degree. Can't understate what he meant to this team and D corps. He may not be NHL right away but I think he could be solid AHL in the right system. I doubt he goes to VAN where his uncle is.

As for Cecere, Saucerman was 5'9, and held his own. Schechter is 5'10 185. Once Cecere gets into Boothby's S/C programs will pack on some muscle. That's for sure. Allegedly he is a smooth skater and passer so if he's kind of an offensive zone specialist I'm ok with that. North Dakota showed that having defensemen who can work the offense adds a whole new dimension to the game. So, maybe that's what Cecere will bring.

Agree wholeheartedly as to the NHL comment. This is another case where a player chose bad advice over a good education. However, I see this as a net positive for NU. Let the more talented Dmen on the roster fight to be the go-to guy instead of a C- skater playing 25 minutes a night.

If he is graduating early, as NU_Husky stated below, how is this a bad decision for his education?

Have you seen the Bruins defense? How could he have no chance of making it? Degree in hand going to one of the organizations who need the most help on defense in the league. Yeah terrible decision

Probably because he's the fourth best defenseman signing by the bruins in the past month, so he had to beat out Gryz, O'Gara, and Carlo, along with every other defenseman in the system.

It sounds like he is not being graduated early, but is about one semester ahead of where he would be normally expected to be. I don't expect him to sign with Boston, but it would make it easier for him to pick off the courses he needs for his degree.
