Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Yes Diehard Dogs is alive. It will be more active once the team starts winning. Not even the Hoops team, is generating much noise these days despite the fact that they are favored to win the CAA.

Here is a comment I posted about the Hockey team and the near panic on the part of some posters.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not at all sure that "it" is as bad as many have bemoaned. Other than the stinker against UVM, we haven't played badly. Colgate is a good team and Henry Dill stole a gume for UMass the same way that Witt stole some for us last year. If we had UMass' puck luck, we might have won 5-2. We had none at all (no good luck, anyway).

I'd bet serious $ that we will average more than 1 GAG for the rest of the season and that Roy and Szmats will produce >10 pts each. Many teams which are off to hot starts will cool down. Merrimack will not play.800+ hockey. Notre Dame will eventually have to leave South Bend and play teams which are likely to will more tha 10 games this year. In other words, there will be, as there always is, a reversion to the mean. Puck luck tends to even out over a long season.

This weekend, against a possibly overrated (in pre-season polls) QPac team, we will start to get a feel for how mean the mean may be.

In brighter news than our current season, the Ducks have called Josh Manson up to the NHL.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

A new recruit.

Over The Boards @OTBPuckWatch
99 F Kyle MacLean (@NJRocketsJunior U19) commits to Northeastern. Huge get for the Huskies. Fiery, smart, talented. Our #23 uncommitted.

Thanks for that. Looks like MacLean has some filling out to do, listed at 5'10 145 lbs. But definitely a nice looking get for JM and Co.

The kid is just 15 years old. If he was heavier then that he would probably be considered fat. Lots of time for him to make Taco Bell runs and to eat all of that excellent Jersey pizza.

NU has 3 kids from the class of '99 committed right now. It will be interesting to see how many of those 3 actually make it to NU. Lots can change in 4 years. Think of it this way, next years freshman class will be seniors before those three kids would get here. The chance that this coaching staff will even be around then is slim to none. And we all know that where Keefe goes, he will take the best recruits with him.

Thank you doctor. Perhaps a second opinion is need here - by someone who has actually examined the young gentleman.;) You might be right about Primeau and MacLean, not Petrick. It will also depend on whether the whole staff is thrown out or whether the relationships involve Madigan as much or more than Keefe.

Here's a terrific article about "Puck Luck" whick discusses the situation that the Huskies find themselves experiencing.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Anybody going down to the Q on Saturday? Hard to get tickets? How long is the drive? I am debating about going down to attempt to see win #1.

Did the drive down there last weekend, took about an hour and 45 min from Boston to Hamden using 84 and the Merritt. Not sure about tickets though. I have a cousin who is hooking me up with student tickets.

This is even more important considering the chatter about firing up the "Fire Madigan" bandwagon. We saw the mass exodus of talent when Cronin left. I'd expect a similar one in terms of recruits if Jimmy or Keefe were to get the ax, simply because it seems kids seem to be committing to a coach/system more and more versus the school, focusing on their athletic development first and foremost (Much to the HA's chagrin).

I too will be going down, I'll be the guy in the Szmatula jersey. I bought tickets a few weeks ago through QU, but they are quite limited now. I'd still advise checking them out via their website. The Ell Hall ticket office also had tickets, not sure when they get sent back to QU.

Even if Madigan is fired, which I'd give a 10% probability at this time, several of the recruits have family relationships with NU. Griffin and Felipe come to mind. The Cronin recruits had relationships with Albie, for the most part. Gaudreau mentioned that if any of the coaches he knew had stayed, he'd have honored his committment. If the HA knew then what he knows now, after the Szmatula controversy, HA would probably have found some other way to screw the program. He ws dtermined to "clean house".
As for the players' concerns about their education: Their hockey dreams dominate the thoughts of most of the top players and as well as the the thoughts of many of those who don't have a prayer of earning a good living from their sport. Remember Brodie Reid? After 3 years in the AHL, he has earned a demotion to the ECHL. Then there was Jake Newton and the latest Swede. They were students until they could get a contract. I bet they might do things differently if they had the chance.
Does anyone have the stats about the number of players leaving early during the past decade? I'm curious to know what trends can be observed.

I find this to be a silly reason to not let a coach go. Yes, Keefe would probably take some guys with him if he stayed in college if he was let go. But what would getting more talented kids into the system mean if the person in charge of coaching them and making them better players cannot do that?

I will repeat what I said earlier. Look at the sophomore class. Take out Szmatula, have those kids gotten off to a good start or look like better players? Look at the junior class. Outside of Roy, who there has gotten better? Even Roy himself! Is he a better player? He is stronger and such, but is he better?

Also, you hire the right person with the right pedigree, majority of those kids would stay. But I would never not let a guy go because he supposedly has great players coming in. When in truth, nobody knows if these kids are going to be any good anyway! Not even the guys who recruit them.

I wasn't trying to use that as a reason to keep JM, but I think it is reasonable to expect some of the recruits to decommit if he and/or Keefe were to be let go. I also do not trust the HA to hire someone with "the right pedigree," as weknow he does not prioritize the success of our hockey program. Also regarding your point about the sophomore class, I believe ZAR has earned his keep. Hedges and Gunn also have their proponents, though Gunn being scratched kinda mitigates that. Players from the two classes have shown flashes, just haven't show sustained periods of success.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Reading some of the latest articles the questions asked "What happend to Northeastern " they state that they were overrated, it was stated they are just not that good the article talked about the pathetic 0-18 PP is. The writer was right about everything, the one thing they did not mention "why" it's simple and yet very difficult to fix. Leadership plain and simple. No one has stepped up including our captains. Josh Manson was a great leader and when he was not there we collapsed. For this team to turn around a leader must emerge it must be someone that everyone will rally around. If its Dax than he must lead this team make plays and be influential on and off the ice. If its Reed than he needs to do the same. If its Witt than he needs to get on board and take control. This team has talent and allot of it but without that leader you can forget about it we are done. The PP must get on track if Roy is the leader than its time to lead. If some one does step up than we will see a team that will be better than last year. Hope some one steps up

What did Manson do that made him a great leader that the current players you mentioned are not doing this year?

A reasonable question, but you are asking the wrong people. The coaches or players themselves might be able to give you/us more insight.

NU Husky: I don't believe Gunn was part of last year's freshman class. Also JStevens has had his moments. He and his brother have the potential to help the program as they improve their skills.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

He did the intangibles key hits. A couple key goals but something maybe in the locker room. A team takes the identity of its leadership Manson, Pimm. I think this team will be fine but it has to have its leaders make some key plays and right now no one has done that. Lets hope that someone makes some key plays and we get some puck luck.

He wasn't, but H01 referenced the junior class outside of Roy, and Gunn was an example of someone who I think has shown flashes from that group. I'd agree on JStevens having his moments. I love Nolan's game, I hope John takes a step or two forward this year so he can step up and be our top C if (when) Szmats bounces.

Yeah, that was kind of my point. It is beyond silly for us on the outside to just say the problem is leadership. Plus it's not exactly fair to knock the current kids when for all we know they are better leaders than the guys mentioned from last year.

If a 3rd pair D gets a few "puck luck" bounces that result result in "a couple key goals" is he now a leader, and the team "takes the identity of his leadership"?
