Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

For most of the posts regarding tonights game, the emphasis is on the D and Witt. While I do accept the fact that the D will have to play their best two games of the season so far and Witt will have to be the mid-season Witt, very few comments have been made regarding the O. I think that, if the O can get a few early goals and play their best games of the season so far, the need for the D to step up to 100%+ might not be necessary. Let's not rely totally on the Roy line either, but hope that the other lines play up to their abilities and give the UNH D and Goaltending something to remember. No, I don't expect all 4 lines to score, but if the team plays UNH the way they did against BC in the Beanpot Final (and I'm not necessarily referring to the last 4 minutes of the game), this could surprise UNH a bit and get the 2 wins the team needs to go further in the playoffs, and the NCAAs.

I typically find that if the forwards play well and score goals, the odds of winning typically go up too.

Obviously if they play well and score goals the odds of winning goes up, and I realize that, but do you think the NU forwards will be able to counter the UNH D and backchecking of the UNH forwards or do you think it is only the D and Witt who will determine if we win or not, because NU will score a few goals, I hope. BTW, who wins if a shootout develops, which I don't think will happen.

we haven't won at the whit since 2007 or so..!!! c'mon team.. that in itself is motivation.. that & that ncaa thingy..

I think the NU forwads can handle the UNH defense. NU forwards typically do not handle backchecking forwards well. We get shoved off the puck pretty easy, and one of my pet peeves all year is how careless with the puck this team is. But i do not see the game being won or lost there.

I am more worried about how the NU Defense, even with Manson and Benning back and how they will handle the UNH pressure. Because they typically do not handle it well.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

Win tonight and they have a shot. Don't and I would not bet the farm on winning two in a row on Lake Whitt..

Getting Manson and Benning back will help, but neither is a shut down guy. It just pushes guy who would be better off in Division III out of the lineup.

The new kid from Thayer is a typically JM/Keefe/Foley recruit. A prep school kid from a winning program, high character, who can come in and be a practice player who knows he wont play but wont rock the boat either. The idea you can pick up a dman this late in the game for next season who can actually step in and play, it just does not happen anymore. And as someone pointed out below, if he was good, no reason why PC would not have had him on their hockey team, or told him he could attempt to walk on and still play that spring sport.

If you are a scholarship player for any sport that then you are for all sports. Meaning that if Providence was giving him a full ride for lacrosse, then if he made the team for hickey he would count towards there 18 hockey scholarships.

that does not sound right. Matt Keating played baseball and hockey for us back in the day. James Wintson who just won the NC for FSU is on the baseball team.

There has got to be some kind of rule around that.

It's a little different, but it is true that if a lacrosse scholarship player plays ice hockey, then the scholarship counts in hockey, not lacrosse. There's a hierarchy to prevent football and basketball teams from bringing on additional players by giving them scam scholarships to play in other sports. You can play down, but you can't play up (e.g., a person on ice hockey scholarship can play lacrosse, but a person on lacrosse scholarship can't play ice hockey). Keating's scholarship money would need to count toward hockey and not baseball. Winston's would need to count toward football and not baseball. So, it doesn't count twice, but the NCAA rules determine which sport it counts towards. Here's a good summary of this. http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/tam/genrel/auto_pdf/comp101-4-multi-sport-sas.pdf

Interesting line charts:

Roy/Stevens/Pimm
ZAR/Szmatula/Snydeman
McMurtry/Hedges/Reid
Pond/Belonger

Schechter/Manson (I like this)
Dax/Benning
Fennell/Sauce
Gunn

7 Defencemen, interesting. No DD.

Glad Madigan didn't listen to Huskies01's delusional thinking. :)

Schecter in the lineup aside Manson.

No Darou.

A legit skater on every D pairing.

A legit skater on every D pairing.

And considering Manson and Benning are probably still going to have some rust, I'd rather have an extra pair of D legs to rotate in rather than a 4th liner who won't contribute much on offense.

Lots of possibilities. Wonder if Schechter will rotate up into the fourth line when they get out there or if one of the top line forwards will rotate down.

This could change after warm-ups. Teams can send more players out for pre-game warm-ups but must let the officials know the actual players for the game once the warm-ups have ended. I hope this is the way JM goes tonite, but I'm concerned about rotating 3 right wings thru four lines. Maybe the 7th D can take a turn on right wing.

Chances are they dont play the 4th line very much.

As for being wrong, lets see how much Schechter plays first.

I wonder if they are going this route because they feel that Manson/Benning may not be able to go a full game, and that Gunn is also playing injured?

Schechter/Manson is a disaster waiting to happen. One cant play defense, the other rather run guys in the neutral zone all night.

As for going this route to "fool" UNH, please, I am sure Umile is all worked up now.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

Stevens needs to bury that rebound on the PP. Should be 1-0, whistled it wide.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

The fact that they are going with 3 dmen on the PP shows how scared they are of the big ice up there.

Gotta like the way the first period went. Get outshot, barely see the puck, Witt plays well, 0-0. Its how they won games most of the season.

Literally was my exact thinking. :D
