Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

If Manson and Benning are back, Fennell and Schechter both head back to the stands. They like DD back there more. Fennell I hate to see on the big ice sheet, though i think he has played the best of the replacements, and Schechter can only go forwards, not backwards and has no idea how to play the position. Schechter is like a less talented Saucerman.

Driving to work this morning it really hit me that we wont have home games this weekend. Was really annoyed by that. Was looking forward to going to Matthews at least one more time this year.

anyway, only a few more days until we can discuss wheter or not Roy is coming back. Hurray!

Agree that Fennell has performed well, but completely disagree on Schechter, who has been the best defenseman on the team during the past two weeks. His skating and passing are as good as we've seen this year on the blue line. I think we'll see a lot of him against UNH on the big sheet this weekend.

If Schechter is our best dman any weekend, we get killed. Which maybe we why got swept two weeks ago. Look beyond the flash, which is what he has to offer.

He was our best Dman against Maine and we took 3 of 4 points. The BU sweep was definitely not due to his play.

The biggest question for this weekend has nothing to do with the injuries or the defense. We win if the best Clay Witt shows up and we lose if he doesn't. That has been the story all season.

Still flying high ranked 14th in the USA, im happy about that and some great weekend hockey!

Here is the current Pairwise #8-#14:

8 Massachusetts-Lowell 51 21-9-4 .6765 8 .5537 8
9 Notre Dame 50 21-12-2 .6286 12 .5482* 9
10 North Dakota 49 20-11-3 .6324 10 .5465 10
11t Providence 47 19-9-6 .6471 9 .5463* 11
11t Vermont 47 19-12-3 .6029 16 .5418 12
13 Cornell 45 15-8-5 .6250 13t .5412 13
14t Michigan 44 17-11-4 .5938 17 .5404 14
14t Northeastern 44 18-12-4 .5882 19t .5393 15

The only way NU climbs up a bit would be with the following games as i see them:

NU has to defeat UNH to have any chance at the NCAAs whatsoever.
BC has to defeat Notre Dame
UML has to defeat UVM
Maine has to defeat PC
Clarkson has to defeat Cornell
Minnesota has to defeat Michigan

That being said, the following is most likely IMO:
NU defeats UNH (cautiously optomistic)
BC will defeat Notre Dame
UML will defeat UVM
Maine/PC is up in the air but most likely PC - which would still help NU
I don't know Clarkson or Cornell
Minnesota will defeat Michigan (I've seen a few Minnesota games on cable and they are powerful)

Anything can happen so - GO Huskies!

I'll take Schecter on the big ice over DD.

I do not think he made it on the ice in the third periods of those games, unless it was a shift or two. Gunn, Dax, Sauce were the best the dmen those two games.

I was unaware that we had any defenseman who might have been call "best" during those games.::(

I think that Schecter would be better than Darou on Lake Whitt. I would not be surprised if his future role with the team might be as a RW. We could use a good defensive forward and PK guy with Pimm leaving.

No way he sits Gunn and Saucerman, they have played the most. They will get lost on the big ice. I think Schechter should play, he is a better skater.

Now I am convinced that you do not watch the games. Biggest turnover of the season was commited by Saucerman. He is brutal, there is no scenerio where he is the best player on the ice.

I think you're watching the wrong number. He's number 11. In the first game, he was on the ice regularly in the 3rd period, including when Pimm tied it up at the end. He also ran point on the second PP unit. He had the most ice time in the second game and double-shifted in the third period. Here's the story that mentions his ice time. 25 minutes in the second game. Probably 10 of those in the third period. And he was plus 3 on the weekend. The guys you mentioned were plus 1, even and minus 2. Are you really watching the games? http://gonu.com/news/2014/2/25/MHKY_0225143921.aspx

IF NU beats UNH they will move up in the rankings. Michigan has a tough road, and it would be nice if Lowell could help them out and beat VT in 2 games. But all of this means nothing if they lose!

Agree that Gunn and Saucerman play. I think NU_Husky had the right six, though the pairings may get jumbled some.

I paired them that way thinking it would be best to have 2 OD/DD pairs as the bottom 4 rather than a DD pair (Dax/Benning) and an OD pair that can't play actual D (Sauce/Sheks). I'm terrified that DD will be in the lineup, he will be eaten alive on the big ice.

Makes sense. Ultimate pairings may be influenced by how healthy Manson and Benning are and how that impacts PP and PK personnel.

I thought a couple of weeks ago I saw a tweet or post that Benning was not going to be back anytime soon. It said frozen 4.

So will Gunn. So will Dax.

Its not a great skating defense. Any team that goes with skate at them instead of dump and chase will typically find it pretty easy against us.

If it comes down to a choice between DD and Schechter, I'd likely go with the better skater (Schechter). The tradeoff is DD's experience vs Schechter's mobility or, put a different way, the potential for a freshman defensive mistake vs the probability of a veteran defensive mistake.

If these games were to be played on a standard-size rink, I might think differently.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

Madigan only played Schechter this year because of injuries. If Manson and Benning never get hurt, he never makes it back on the ice. If both are back, I doubt he gets on the ice this weekend. He would be as lost as Gunn and Dax on the big sheet, his skating ability wouldnt help him any.
