Re: Northeastern Huskies 2012 Offseason
However, due to ever increasing travel costs and an ever increasing pathetic program, Rhode Island to downgraded to the NEC. It seemed imminent that Maine and UNH would eventually quit too, which I hope they don't by the way, but that's a side point. This caused UMass to upgrade to the MAC, since if you're going to have to fly to Virginia all the time to play FCS, you might as well fly to Ohio all the time to play FBS instead.
As a result, football is more of a priority than it ever has been. Just before Cahoon left, UMass announced a new deal with WEEI's affiliate in Western and Central MA to broadcast Football and Basketball games. They won't be broadcasting Hockey Games. The school also didn't say anything about trying to find a home for hockey games. The above is all verifiable fact.
Now, as to the rumor I've heard from people I trust. Cahoon got upset about this and that caused the meeting. Anything else I could say about the meeting is speculation, but I can sort of see both sides. On the one hand, you have an AD who is trying his best to make sure a Football upgrade is successful as possible. That's his legacy. He's also at a basketball school, so to keep the longtime donors happy, b-ball has to be a priority. On the other hand, you have a Coach in the premier conference in his sport, a sport which is by far the most popular among students, and his team is taking a back seat to others.
Had Northeastern killed it's program before stealing football from the A-10, or better yet, kept football, none of this would have happened. It's all your fault. Although, had Northeastern done either of those things, UMass also wouldn't have been FBS, so I guess you have to take the good with the bad.
Back to the topic, I've also heard rumors (from people I don't know so therefore trust a lot less) that the AD asked if Quick could bring the Stanley Cup to a Football game as opposed to a hockey game. If true, I think Cahoon would be justifiably upset.
Getting back off topic, I live by Parsons Field and there's an Atlantic 10 Football Banner hanging in the windows one of the sheds. The one closest to the parking lot on the first base line to next to the Locker Rooms. Who do I contact at NU to see about obtaining that banner? I really enjoyed Atlantic 10 Football and think it's a travesty the school that killed it taunts me by displaying it.
The timing of the meeting is Northeastern's fault. Northeastern kept their pathetic excuse for a football program alive long enough to steal football from the Atlantic 10. This meant the CAA was in charge of expansion. Northeastern stuck around for what, two seasons of CAA Football and then killed it. That caused Hofstra to also kill football, since the CAA, who both Hoftstra and Northeastern were part of, decided it might be a brilliant idea to add a team from Georgia to replace NU in the North, meaning the North had increased travel expenses. This destroyed divisions which meant the entire conference (thankfully) had to pay for that mistake equally.Among the many unfathonables in the coaching tumult, is why the AD or Cahoon waited so long to have their little chat. Had they decided to part ways in March, the school would have had a far easier time finding someone to take their dead-end job. Didn't they learn anything from our mistakes?
