Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

He came on ice cold. No warm-up whatsoever. If we had started Witt in the Beanpot, we win. Did you watch any of last season?

Admittedly not a NU fan, but have seen many NU hockey games over the years when my teams were playing at NU or were off and just went to Matthews as it's a great venue. I've seen NU play about 10 times past couple years and with a few exceptions have never been overly impressed with Rawlings. A lot of NU fans seem to want Witt to play more. Not arguing, but why do people think two different coaches now have chosen Rawlings over Witt? Must be something they see.

Because he's more experienced but Cronin made up his mind last season before Witt had a chance to prove anything. Witt on the road would make me happy.

"He came on ice cold. No warm-up whatsoever. If we had started Witt in the Beanpot, we win"..........Skinsfan09 since you have the ability to predict outcomes with 100%
certainty can you use your super powers for the greater good.......or at least let us know what lottery numbers will be picked next week. By the way where did Witt de-frost
himself last Sunday before he entered in the 3rd. What did he do skate around the locker room on roller skates? Excuses...excuses....

First off, who taught you how to type? Keyboards have been around since the 70s.

Second, the larger sample size, that includes regular season and playoff games, supports the idea that Witt deserves more playing time than he gets. I'd love to go back and watch all the momentum-killing goals in big games that our starter has let in over the last two seasons.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

It is clear you do not like Rawlings. I will leave it at that. Again if you have any predictions on anything that will change this crazy world we live in please share them with
us as it would be a crime for your special talents not to be used for the greater good. LOL!!!

I doubt he came on ice cold. Chances are he knew the third period was him and was warming up inbetween the 2nd and 3rd period. He came in cold on Sunday.

Anyway, the backup goalie is often the most popular guy on the team.

Its a style over substance argument. Witt just looks better with all the flopping and the movement, Rawlings always looks old and slow due to his style. That is why people rather see Witt. This is Rawlings job to lose. Once Madigan and the coaches get around to stressing playing in our end, I am sure we will see the best Rawlings has to give, and the argument will not be there anymore.

That being said, I am sure he is going to see a ton of puck against UNH on Friday due to what the last two games have shown, so I would say that giving Witt the start out at Merrimack would not be out of the question.

It's not a matter of flipping like Hasek. Erratic play can get you in trouble. It's that 9 times out of 10, Witt has proven that he will make the opposition pick and scratch and pick and scratch for every goal. You don't have the constant momentum-killing what the heck moments like you do with Rawlings. Good Rawlings is very good when he uses his size to get pucks into his chest but he is killed when you have a team with any sort of speed that will pass across.

Witt is much quicker laterally. He's more likely to give you that one big save that you need. If Rawlings were more consistent, I'd have no issue whatsoever. When he's hot, he's hot, when he's not, he's really not. Roberto Luongo of the NCAA.

nice pick up by NU on Mike Gunn. was going to Michigan State but not anymore. Big, strong 92 left shot d with offensive talent. Been in USHL for 2/3 years but has had pretty serious knee injuries. If they are gone, will be very good for them.

Shot to shot it is much harder to score on Rawlings then it is on Witt. His size in net gives shooters nothing to look at. The guys that were beating Rawlings at the end of last season were the top of the top guys, guys who are going to the NHL or will have long careers in the minors. Guys with pro shots who can pick those little corners above his shoulders when he goes down a bit early. Speed teams kill everyone, but as long as the NU defense stays in their lanes, it is not an issue with passes going side to side.

He sure did not hurt them when they won the playoff series at bu last year. I love this momentum-killing argument. What exactly is a momentum killing goal? I would subscribe that EVERY goal given up is. Is there ever a good time to give up a goal that does not kill momentum? As if when the other team is pounding away it is ok? So the final goal we scored on Friday against UMASS was not momentum-killing?

Witt has proven nothing in his short time in net outside of the fact he flips and flops like a fish out of water. the idea that Witt is this amazing goaltender who time after time gets passed over dating back to his days in the USHL where it took until his final season for him to be a starter, I do not get it. If he was that great, three different coaching staffs at NU, (Cronin, Sebastian, Madigan) would have put him to start. So far outside of a game here or there, it has not happened.

Again though, I would not be surprised if Witt does get a turn in one of the games this weekend.

I don't think he should be the full-time starter, just he should get more time. And I don't think he's "amazing", but that he is a different style goalie that hash is advantages. The issue I have with Rawlings is consistency. If he was more consistent this wouldn't even be a topic of conversation. But you cannot deny in the games Witt has started, he has looked very good. Nobody is saying he is Hasek which you are implying.

I was not thinking Hasek at all. while he did flip and flop, I did not compare Rawlings to anyone, I did not compare Witt to anyone, nor did i say you think he is Hasek in net.

Witt has looked like Witt looks. Does he deserve more starts? I do not know. He has a very small sample size, playing in games that were either over or did not matter one way or the other.

As for Rawlings and consistent. I would say the ENTIRE NU team has always lacked consistency. Since i started back in 96 through today, the majority of the players on the ice have lacked it up until their Junior years at which point they become what they will be the rest of their careers. Ouside of a few guys like Esner who get hot (finally) the last 3 months of their careers, what you see junior year (or you could make the case last half of sophomore year) is typically what you get. Some guys start off hot freshmen year, tail off, and you never see much of them again (Scott Selig would be the classic example, Tuckerman and Quailer to date though injuries play a part there). Some guys start slow, and gradually get better. (Thiessen, MacLeod, McNeely) How many blue line goals and misses with his mitt did Thieseen give up his first two years? A bunch if I remember correctly.

All Rawlings has done in his stay here so far is get better year to year. Yeah occaionaly he lets one in that drives you crazy, but as long as he keeps getting better we are in great shape. So far this year, it has not been him, more the guys in front of him who have been to busy not gettng back on defense, or turing around to start offense before the puck is cleared. Thus our defense can not stay out of the box, 11 of the 18 penalties so far are on dmen, to busy covering for forwards who are not in the play, and are getting tired out by the end of the game. Not to mention breaking in two new guys ( one of which i think is a perfect 8th dman but is early to tell), and our best guys trying to do to much.

Classic new coaching staff stuff that I am sure (hope) is being addressed and will get better as the season rolls along.

As for more starts for Witt, where? Do you want to play him against the top Hockey East teams or the bottom? Which games would you like to potentially sacrafice needing divisonal points by not playing your #1 guy? UML? Merrimack which does not have a dymaic offense or play a speed side to side game like bc or bu? Or bc/bu since those are the teams that do play that speed game?

Its not that easy.

Nope. Marginal player with top speed but that is about it. He can sit in the section named after him and probably provide the same out of offense as he did last weekend. Maybe a bit more since he cannot pass for his life, thus less turnovers.
