Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

It's like week 1.5, easy on the prognostications of doom and gloom, at least save it for the end of the month. We showed some good signs and some bad, let's see how many of our mistakes we can fix.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Where is everybody?.. these threads aren't what they used to be..
i guess i'm leaning toward joining DHD.. all the action seems to be on that thread.. true?

Anyway, g'luck against UNH.. Umile will make sure his team does not repeat its Boston performance 2 gms in a row. Hope Coach has them ready, Go NU :)

There seems to be more news and opinion regarding NU hockey on DHD than there is on here, IMO. USCHO remains good for getting insights on the bigger picture, plus it's been mildly amusing to watch the westerners slime each other in the wake of the NCHC-WCHA split.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

So who starts in net Friday after the dud Rawlings put up in Maine? Were they all "good" goals - or were there soft goals he should have stopped? I know Witt stopped everything he saw but it was only 1/2 of one period after the Black Bears were already up by 4

They were mostly good goals, although a couple caught Rawlings a bit deep in the crease. Mostly it was a lack of defensive discipline on the part of the forwards.
Interestingly, Bitetto was on for 4 of the goals, but he and Eibler can't do it all themselves. witt looked like last year, which is good, flipping flopping and doing whatever it takes to keep the puck out. The D didn't support him any better than they supported Rawls.

We should see Quailer and Karlsson become available for UNH on Friday, which will essentially rplace our 5th line with a second line. You might also expect to see Mclauglin's line refigured as it has accomplished very little so far.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

You mentioned Quailer & Karlsson becoming available.. what about Ferriero? Does he have more gms (sit out) left?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I believe all three return Friday for UNH. It should be noted our first weekend was played minus an forward line and our probably second-best player (#10). Also the McLaughlin-Vrolyk-Dongara line has to be broken up. Not enough size.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Glad to hear full team will be back. Let's work on that powerplay as well. It won't be easy, but gotta get Madigan his first home 'W' Friday :)
Go Huskies

There is barely enough size (5'10, 5'9", 5'7") + decent skill - chemistry - a real mucker. Just three roadrunners.

I hope you are right about Cody returning this weekend. I had the impression that his suspension would last about two weeks longer than Quailer's. The three amigos have been practicing together as a line and could certainly replace Reid - Stone - Morra (although IMO, Morra deserves more playing time. that would instantly add size and skill.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Does this mean he (Cody), will be back for the BC gm.. or right after?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Very glad to hear about Quailer and Karlsson returning, I think they'll provide an immediate boost. It was apparent that NU was using the top 2 lines a lot, and now we can use the top 3 lines and create more offense. I agree with others, that speed line doesn't work as is, and I think will be altered. Here's what I think:

Pimm-Daniels-Saponari
Quailer-McLaughlin-Karlsson
Dongara-Vermeersch-Tuckerman
Reid-Morra-Vrolyk

Keeps saponari line together and moves them up to 1st, and takes replaces Donagara and Vrolyk with Karlsson and Quailer. I think that could be a solid line of players, and when Ferriero comes back McLaughlin moves again (perhaps replacing Pimm on the 1st line). 3rd and 4th line are a mix of speed, skill, and hitting power, and there's any number of switches you could make there. Not an expert on the lines or anything, just my 2 cents on what we might see.

That's not known, I'm guessing he comes back either for BC or UNH. Hopefully Madigan mentions something about it next weekend.

I like your first three lines. On the fourth line, I'd play Manno in the center with Morra and Vrolyk on the wings. Reid simply isn't ready yet. Let him sit and watch how it's done for a few games.

I didn't expect Cody back for UNH1. I would like to see him uncorked in time for BC. He'll probably commit a few offsides violations in his zeal to make his presence felt by birds.

Makes sense about the 4th line, Reid hasn't done anything that I've noticed, and probably could use some more time practicing and getting acclimated to D1 hockey.

As for Ferriero, hopefully he's back for that game, he played well the end of last year and hopefully is hungry to score some goals against BC.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Throw Vroylk in there as someone who could end up spending time in the stands. Really, what does he add at this point? Do we need to play all 3 of the small guys every night in Vroylk, McLaughlin, and Dongara.

A rotation between Vroylk, Manno and Reid, until one of them starts to add some offense works for me.

By the end of January, I would not be surprised if you could add Dongara to that list. Outside of the occasional odd man rush, he really adds nothing either and can disappear for games at a time. If it was not for his awesome speed to excite people at times, nobody would notice if he was missing.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Guys you likely won’t see the hanful's of blue chip commitments to NU, like you did with Cronin who had a small pipe line as a coach with prior college and AHL exp. Madigan was a scout part time, but let’s face it he really has been working for the University for 25 years most recently as Dir. of the physical plant and later as some sort of administrative Dean in the School of Business Admin. So we will see, what that amounts too. Now for the real news, I know it’s early, but I watched the Maine game on the Live stream and bottom line, we are going to have a rough time playing the metal of the league this year, w/o big improvements. However, they will at times be fun to watch, so we should enjoy that, but clearly this is a rebuilding year and 10 wins will be a challenge. Just being realistic. I think we should just hope they can make the HET. Although, I will add, that this team will surprise at times, and should be pretty fun to watch, but we are not going to be beating BC or BU this year unless we get some luck like if Chris stands on his head. If we can finish 6th or 7th, that will be a big accomplishment. Just got my NH tix. So will do my best to cheer them on regardless, but BC kicked the crap out of SD today and well, you can all do the math.
I meant ND of course, but SD deserves its props too, I don't know what if anything they have out there is SD in terms of fans, I guess about 500k people live there. LOL!

I think you are under-appreciating Vrolyk's place on the team. The kid brings speed, streaky offense and is one of the team's best penalty killers, although the best PK is not to take so many penalties.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

All great points.. I do not think Rawlings had his best gm in the home opener last Friday (he was good, not great). Far as Sunday.. combination of first road gm & being hung out to dry. He did better in the period against the X Men in the scrimmage from what i saw. Glad to hear Witt played well against Maine in the time he got.

Would love to get a goalie or two get hot, as we get the full roster back. Looking forward to seeing a solid outing from Rawlings this Friday (with some help from D). If we can get a good tandem going (Rawlings at home.. Witt on the road).. might help us down the stretch. We've weathered a lot as a team this offseason.. time to take it to the opponent.
Let's go Huskies :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

a) Joe Vitale got 2nd star last night. Great to see.

b) Witt absolutely deserves more time but sadly will probably not see it...sigh. Witt on the road sounds good to me. He's so much more athletic and on the road, you need that one BIG save more than at home.
