Northeastern Huskies 2010 Offseason: Lots of home ice now

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010 Offseason: Lots of home ice now

5'9", 140 lb. forward Matt Gaudreau, the younger brother of Northeastern 2012 recruit John Gaudreau, has also committed to the Huskies.

The younger Gaudreau, a Dec.'94 birthdate who will be entering his sophomore year in high school, will join his brother on St. Botolph St. in the fall of '13.

Thanks, it'll be interesting to see where he goes (I assume USHL), and how he does in comparison to his brother. They both seem about the same size.

From USHR:
"Matt is a two-way player who will play as tough defensively as offensively," Beach says. He's excellent in all three zones. His still level is very good. He's not as dynamic as John, and no one will outscore John. But Matt plays a more complete game than John. He's a little bigger than his brother right now - and he's still growing."

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010 Offseason: Lots of home ice now

I love that Cronin has been getting commitments from some younger guys recently. It's crazy to think a 15 year old has already committed to NU (almost as crazy as having someone start the season at 17 this fall).

Almost time for a new thread! Ice should be laid down during the week of Sept. 12th.

I can't bleeping wait. I really can't. My expectations are low, however I look forward to riding the ride.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010 Offseason: Lots of home ice now

My question is how low are the expectations? I really think the team will be much improved from last year. Having said that I can see NU finishing anywhere from 3-8 but I really dont see them missing the playoffs again.

I don't think they'll miss the playoffs, and I suppose crazier things have happened if we end up getting home ice. It sort of depends if Rawlings steps up and if our offense can score a lot, and if the young defensive corp can shutdown the opposing teams.

I think 20 wins are very possible, especially considering the weak OOC schedule we have. The good thing about our schedule is that it's designed to give the young players plenty of experience before they get into the heavy part of the Hockey East schedule, which will hopefully give us a better shot to finish well at the end of the season.

I think we win a ton of OOC games, mainly all of them but the beanpot, but finish 7th in HE play. I expect the offense to kick it up a notch and the defense to be shaking. I could see us finishing anywhere from 4th-7th, but I'm keeping the expectations on the low end so I don't get my hopes up.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010 Offseason: Lots of home ice now

One aspect that hasn't been discussed much is the character of the team. The team last year wasn't as unified as the 08-09 team, they didn't have the same identity as Cronin had said. I'm interested in seeing what effect getting knocked out of the playoffs did to the team, whether it'll help develop a character, and whether it'll make them more hungry for wins.

Before Newton left i thought this would be a very good year. lots of veteran forwards, some experience for last year's freshmen, bring Quailer back into the mix and see how the Witt/Rawlings combo works out and i was thinking home ice was the goal. i still feel like home ice is possible, but less likely. i don't see this team dropping below 7th (PC, UMass and UML are my picks for anywhere from 8-10) and other than bc I don't think anyone is that far ahead of NU. Maine, UNH and bu should be, but again...depending on how things break and how the freshmen fare they could jump over any one of those teams (i'm not sold on Maine until I see how their goaltending shakes out).

Realistically it's a battle between MC, NU and UVM for 5-7, but I think 3 of the Big 4 have plenty of flaws and if these freshmen can play, watch out.

Ya and we definitely just took some games completely off. See the 9-2 game at UVM, the shalacking we got @ bc after we beat them at home. I feel like there was a mentality of, well if we get two points this weekend, that's all we'll need. I think that was the thing that frustrated me most, some games we clearly just didn't show up. At all.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010 Offseason: Lots of home ice now

All some good points people. Veteran o-lines have to continue to play well this season, the defense has to prove itself, and Rawlings/Witt has to be solid. Anything can happen when the whole team shows up to play.

Only a month before the puck drops, let's see if the team can exceed expectations.

I sure hope so as the expectations of the non-NU posters seems to be 6th to 8th place. We need guys like Muench and Hewkin to mature and help the freshman to adjust quickly. I'd like to think that McNeely learned some leadership lessons last year and can pull the team together internally and head them all in the same direction.

I'll tell you what...I'd been as critical of him as anyone in the past, but I was impressed with Hewkin last year. He's never going to be a top D pairing guy, but he was a solid 5th or 6th guy. If Muench and Maley can stay healthy that would go a long way. And of course those young D-men have to learn the college game in a hurry!

I just want to see more consistency out of the team, from the goal out. Hopefully having Witt in here pushes Rawlings to focus better, or if Witt can beat him out and win the job that would work too.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010 Offseason: Lots of home ice now

Every year there seems to be one or two teams that get low-balled in rankings and end up surprising Hockey East (Maine and Merrimack last year for example). I hope Northeastern can be one of those teams that sneaks under the radar to get home ice.

One could argue that they took more than "some" games completely off from an offensive standpoint, as there were very few games that I watched and thought "wow, they're on tonight"... luckily the defense was clicking for some of those games, or I feel they probably would have fared worse than just a point out of the playoffs. The one that really stung most for me was that UML overtime loss at Matthews.. I finally started to see some life in that offense when they came out for the 3rd period, but the damage was already done early on with a no-show from the opposite end.

The defense is definitely my main concern this year. I'm actually not worried about offense for once, as I feel NU has a lot of talent in last year's freshman class that's still developing, plus MacLeod, McNeely & Quailer. I just want to find out if these young defensive guys are here merely for size, or if they're actually going to be able to work well in the college hockey environment.

29 days...

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010 Offseason: Lots of home ice now

I'm not prone to optimism, but I think we may actually surprise some people this year. If our freshmen can have a year similar to the last two freshmen classes, we're going to put up some goals. While I'm most concerned about our D, if Rawlings has a poor sophomore year or one that isn't close to as good as last year, that would be more devastating than poor play by our defensemen. Given his plans to go pro after this year, it'd sure be nice if he played like a soon-to-be-pro.

The question of how NU does will come down to goal differential. I agree that the offense will be there, I think the D will be about the same as next year, and as far as Rawlings goes, if he doesn't play like a soon to be pro, then he wont be a pro. Chances are he won't be given a contract unless he is the team MVP this year.
