Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

After giving BC 2 tough games and after watching BU last night, NU can handle BU this year. BU has no depth and they miss someone like Nieto. The defense looked very suspect last night.

I hope so.

However, not if we continue to play D like we did last week! It's going to be long season, but this team was picked last and I think we could perhaps make anywhere from 5th to 8th and all things considered we should be happy with that. I was expecting much worse, clearly offensively they are fine. However, the D is a tad shaky and the net minding might not always be strong enough to over come it. 2 weeks in we are in last right where we were predicted to be. Providence, BC, UNH, ND and UML are all likely tough this year, and we are going to struggle to be in the top middle tier. However, we are going to score goals and they should be fun to watch too. I think away in Lowell tonight is going to tell us a lot.

Big win on the road. Posts be ****ed, we hung in and Witt made the saves he could. With Rawlings in goal this game is a loss.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Where is c Ferreiro?

It appears that we can only have one Ferriero in the lineup in league games - for safety reasons.

Nice win and confidence builder. Nice to see Snydeman picking up some points. He busts his butt out there. Nice surprise.

That late clanger of the post by UML was simply puck luck evening out as it does over the course of the season. Posts are not SOGs.

UNH got 9 past UMass tonight.. hopefully we can contain some of that & get back on track nxt wknd. Least Witt gives us a chance.. btw nice crowd at Tsongas tonight.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

What a joy of a game to be at (though the whole third period has my heartbeat going a mile a minute). Great win for the team, huge confidence booster against a very good Lowell team. I love how we did not cave after they tied it, Hedges coming right back with the tying goal was a BIG momentum shifter. Took the life right out of the Tsongas crowd. Roy/Szmatula/Snydeman all played fantastic, Witt kept us in the game and continues to be stellar, and I need to say, Tanner Pond will quickly become a fan favorite. Already one of my favorite players, my buddy and I were commenting on his play, he just loves throwing his body around and hitting people. 110% every game. Love the effort.

Penalties do continue to be an issue, though I thought at least 3 of them were questionable calls at the very best. Saw Cody after the game in sweats, I'm curious if this was additional disciplinary action by Madigan or if there's something else. Gunn also can't come back soon enough, I am tired of seeing Fennell in the lineup. I believe Ryecheers said he could be back for UNH, which would be a nice blue line boost, especially since UNH just put up 9 on UMass.

All in all, great win, very exciting. First 2 points are in the bag, time to keep momentum rolling

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Watching games with Witt is so much better than you know who. Witt makes every save he needs to. It seems every goal minus the blip vs. BC has been a rebound or tap in on an odd man rush. But every possible save he has pretty much made and that is what you need your goaltender to do. And note that when he gave up that goal vs. BC he didn't collapse for the rest of the game.

Also, if Szmatula hadn't been kept, that was a huge decision and wise decision by Madigan to make the NLI mean something. He has at least one point in every game this year I believe and leads the team in scoring. He and Roy are clearly the best forwards on the roster, Roy's goal was just a ridiculous release.

Unsung guys: Pond, Snydeman and the biggest surprise has been Schecter. Kid's going to be a solid d-man. He was fantastic vs. BC.

The biggest issues continue to be recognizing threats in the neutral zone. And once again, 4 guys behind the net on a powerplay, can't happen. But this is a young team that should only improve so this was a great win.

Can someone who was closer to that play/watched it on TV describe what happened? We we're very low and blocked by the NU bench. At first I thought it went in but the whistle was blown before and then I heard Benning helped keep it out.

I watched the game on TV, and it looked like it bounced off the inside of the right post, along the goal line, off the left post and back out. I don't think it could have been any closer without going in. Huskies definitely had a lot of puck luck in the game, as Lowell had at least 4 posts.

I found it interesting the Bazin pulled their goalie with so much time left in the game. He did the same thing in a game at Matthews a couple years ago I believe, and it didn't work out for him then either.

I actually liked the move. Lowell was on the PP and was carrying the play the few minutes before that. It isn't done very often, but I can't fault a coach who goes all out to try and tie the game.

Given the game situation at the time, I make the same move.

He did the same thing two seasons ago against NU at Matthews, not sure if it was a PP for them or not, but NU came down and scored to take a two goal lead. UML put the goalie back in and then scored a goal to get it within 1 again. NU held on for the win.

I'm just personally not a fan at giving a team who can ice the puck for free an empty net to shoot for. Hey if it worked we would all be saying what a good call it was. It was just a coaching decision I thought was interesting. Their powerplay had already scored twice on the night, so I say let it run its course.

Nice to see the victory put the Huskies back into the top-20, not that it matters.
