Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Always thought he would have been great the past few years if given the start ahead of Rawlings more often.

..no kidding. Well, this yr is his chance to make the best of his opportunities & take a young team as far as they can go. Here's hoping.. & nice job Clay! :)

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Clay Witt named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week http://gonu.com/news/2013/11/11/MHKY_1111135321.aspx

He has been stellar, no other way to put it. Really makes you wonder how much things may have been different had he split with Rawlings a little more.

This weekend vs UNH is huge. They're coming off quite the scoring weekend, and we had our big win at UML. 2 teams riding high with 4 points on the line, and with only 20 league games this year every single point is critical. Need to come away with at least 2 (which is very possible). I bet we get DeSmith both times.

UNH has allowed 4 less goals than we have, though we have 10 more goals in the same span. Their PP has been middle-of-the-pack this year, but their PK has been worse than ours. Keefe better be working to exploit that this week.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Any word on Cody Ferriero?

With nothing to go on but my gut, I would say he plays today. We could use his firepower (just gotta also hope he keeps his head about him). Also curious if Gunn will make it back tonight, haven't heard anything about him.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

In 4 conference games NU has scored 2 powerplay goals on 21 chances. They have given up 3 shorthanded goals on those same 21 chances. Again tonight, another shorthanded goal that more or less put the nail in the coffin.

Yeah, we have designed a PP that does great against out of conference teams who are not as familiar with the setup and our players. Come up against conference teams, its a whole different ballgame.

Anyway, UNH goalie had a good night, Huskies cannot hit open nets when they are there, UNH played as well as they could and deserved the win.

Tomorrow will be interesting, and important if they want higher then 9th place. UMASS picked up a point against BC tonight. After tomorrow NU and UMASS will have both finished their season series against UNH and BC. So UMASS goes 0-3-1. We are at 0-3-0. Be nice to go even or even pick up a win. Lot of hockey to be played still, but a lot less games to make up in conference play this year too.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Congrats to UNH.. kept us off our gm all night & shut us down. Actually, the Huskies shut themselves down.. overskating pucks, missing open nets. That is the worst I've seen entire team look all season. Is there a bug going around? (Witt included)..? During nights like these I miss Cronin.. well, his coaching. He could get the group fired up.. would have liked Madigan to do something along those lines when they got the early goal..
its like.. I never see him coach.. i was observing again tonight.. he just seems to ..take it all in stride i guess. Must be a method i guess what do i know. hopefully it isn't a bug.. here's hoping team will come out stronger tomorrow. Quite a lackluster effort at home. Nice crowd though.
Way to go Wildcats.. won 4 in a row.. i don't see anything changing tomorrow. ?What's up with us giving up all these shorties..

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I did want to add.. we played outstanding vs BC (both gms).. dug out a W against a much talented Lowell team..
so.. there was that.. not sure what happened tonight.. not one positive..

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Ouch, I left after 2, @ 2 to 0, however it wasn't even close. I never expected a win though, they were totally dominated and rightfully so. We can't really ever beat UNH with any degree of certainty. I am still hoping for 6th or 7th, though, but as I was at the BC v. UMASS on Thursday, I am starting to think we may not be as good as we think we are. LOL,

Anyway, it is what it is, and we were picked last so, and now we are almost there. I really don't care too much anymore as long as they are fun to watch. Tonight they weren't fun so I went to OUR HOUSE EAST and met some old pals and profs.

Better Luck tomorrow Huskies, but let's face it your winning % in Durham sucks, so onward and upward.

I never really thought you were rightfully deserving of 18th or any ranking for that matter. You are a middle of the road team for sure, with far to many holes. However, still way better than anyone expected, too bad you play in Hockey East where you are both a patsy and a bit of a doormat. Anywhere else an you are a underdog contender!

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Last night may have been the worst game I have seen NU play in my time following the team. It felt like a lot of the puck luck we had vs UML came back around and bit us this game. It seemed like the only person who seemed to want to be there was Clay Witt. The rest of the team weren't even going through the motions. Sloppy play all around- passes into skates, passes behind players, passes to open ice with no one 10 feet near the puck, turnovers in all three zones, a season low SOG total...and I'm just about done with Cody in the lineup. For as much offensive prowess as he can play with, we're basically 5 on 4 with him out there. I pin the SHG largely on him with the "defense" he played. Get Reid back on the third line and put Nathan on the 4th if we must have a Ferriero in the lineup.

Ever the optimist, I try to find positives to take away from everything. From this one, I am very much at a loss. The lack of penalties is a good sign, and Clay continues to be fantastic. But that's it. Roy did nada, Stevens, Hedges, ZAR all did nada. Szmatula had a couple chances but nothing of it. I expect to drop tonight's game too, which would put us in a bit of an early points hole in HE. But as long as we play competent and keep it close, I'd be happy. Any points out of tonight would be gravy for me.

You must be a brand, spanking new fan! We've played much worse than we did last night - with better results. UNH played an outstanding defensive game and got enough offense to win. If we had scored anything like our average, the results might have been different. What we didn't do was connect with our passes in the offensive zone or bury any of the opportunities we had. We also didn't hit anybody. Nor did UNH, really. Skating is their game and we did little to disrupt it.

As for puck luck: You are correct that we had little to none. Puck luck IMO tends to even out over the course of the season - except for parker's bu teams, because, I firmly believe, he made a deal with the devil somewhere along the way:eek::mad: Last night's debacle shows that he's really gone.:D

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I actually paid $9.99 and streamed it from my PC through HDMI to TV. What a waste of 10 bucks! This idea of platooning goalies is crazy. Not that Roy the goalie, played poorly, in fact, I thought we looked a bit better then Friday night and it was close until mid way through the 3rd.

However, tricky Dick has our number in Durham, where we have won only a handful of games since the late 80's. Our top lines and goal scoring threats were shut out of both time and space and without that we had no chance. Same odd man rush issues and shaky D at times. We need to sweep Merrimack next weekend or we will be in last and likely for good!

This couldn't ring more true. I just feel that next weekend is the make-or-break point for the season. I hope that statement proves wrong and we can right the ship. I didn't get to see the game other than the highlights, and JM's press conference. Sounds like we played better than Friday but still pretty poorly. Clay needs to be in net for all HE games, no excuse for him not to be. He gives us our best shot to win. The weekend vs MC is important for both teams- it's going to come down to who wants it more.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I do not see us sweeping Merrimack. We have 1 win in our last 6 outings.. team looked awful at home as well, last wknd.
I do think however, we can split this wknd.. perhaps away.. build from there. Jim Madigan needs to rally the troops!.. then maybe we have chance at 4pts. Go NU

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I was going to bump this thread up, northeastern beat me to it. I think a split is possible- MC has a struggling offense, and if Collins is out it's even worse. They also take the 2nd most penalties in HE (behind us). If we can score (and we have shown we are capable of that) I think we will be fine. 4 points is a real possibility, with 2 being likely I'd say.

According to an article on gonu.com, our freshmen are the third most productive rookie unit in the country. Makes the optimist in me happy, thinking about the 2nd half and our future. JM has to be given some props for bringing this group together.

This young team really does look promising. With the discipline that experience would bring I hope to see great things in the years to come as they lose the #1 in PIMS status.

For the short term of this weekend they should be able to get a split as long as the ghosts of last Friday are gone.

Merrimack has a good goaltending duo, but I think we should be alright. This week could make or break the basement standing for both teams, and they know that. I expect both teams to come out strong. Looking forward to 2 good hockey games, I just found out yesterday I'll be able to make the game at Matthews Very excited!
