Northeastern 2024-25: Last Days (Maybe) for the Old Barn

I’m not sure we watched the same game. they played ok for the last ten of the first and parts of the third but I thought they looked terrible. Half the team just stood around all game. Terrible passing and decisions. Constant icing. Really a dreadful game to watch.

Every team has their number. If you remotely pressure the puck bearer you force bad decisions.

Some questionable coaching decisions tonight also. I’m not sure taking whitehead out when the last couple really weren’t his fault. And Sig really should have been pulled earlier

Agreed but I think they still controlled play for more than half the game. If Whitehead had been sharp they may win this contest. I also agree on the poor puck control under pressure and horrific passing but I thought we already established that the team is fairly untalented. I'm just point out a path to a few wins. This is a basement squad not for lack of effort but for lack of skill. Oh there are a couple of good players but 4/5 of the roster might not start on a good Div 3 bench. That's the real issue. I agree questionable coaching at times but the game plan is score a couple and hope your goalie is having a good night.Have you really looked at the roster meanwhile Gunnerwolfe is on his way to a 50 pt season with OSU. We didn't replace the offence we lost.

So, the best they could do against a team they've dominated for years and one with a heretofore almost unknown goalie is 0-2-1 with only five GF (not counting the gimmick goal)? O-zone play has been listless all year and agree with Rossi that Whitehead seemed off his game. Not a fun game to watch.

Checked in when it was 2-1. Checked in next at 4-1. No reason to check again until it was over. I'm tired of reading Keefe's wishy-washy post mortems. I feel sorry for Wasserman and the Hockey Blog that try to produce positive content and support for the program. The process of moving on to a new Coach will be complicated by the Arena situation but things can't continue on this way. I won't be placated if this team pulls off another Beanpot. I'm past being concerned. I think it's time to try another tack.

Well, I went to the Bruins and watched an epic comeback, headed to the Liberty Hotel for dinner and drinks before I rolled into Matthews to watch them nearly blow a four goal lead after controlling 45 or 50 of the 60 mins. At times they looked great be it against clearly a more marginal opponent. However, in true Huskies fashion, up 4 to 0 with 12 min left they were whistled for a double minor hooking and un-sportsman like. After the play, and for the next 7 mins. they looked like the bad news bears of hockey. The refs then gave them not one, but perhaps two make up calls for nearly changing the completion of the game. You all know the script, with their standard it's all about the zebras snow show. The 2nd penalty on the Bears was the rarely called too many men while trying to to pull the goalie with under two mins remaining. Luckily, our beloved Huskies hung on to hold on, ending the game on a power play that prevented Brown from pulling their goalie for any significant amount of time. The greater concern is the deer in the headlights coach, who does nothing to settle the team when they were taking on water. Instead, he was chirping at refs to no avail. I really think he's on the spectrum and the program won't be going anywhere with this Captain at the helm. Did I mention Gunnerwolfe Fountaine could realistically get to 60 or 70 points over their at OSU. See what happens when good players get out of Dodge and away from a coach who should be riding pine and blowing his practice whistle at a regional HS. I blame Jim. Never hire a friend unless he's better and smarter than you. I good pal named Amar Bose RIP told me that on my 1st co op job in 1985. It's solid advise. We really need to find a way to play more disciplined and collected and Whitehead needs to figure out why he lets in a trickler every night.

Connor is just another highly touted prospect that is struggling to develop in this program.

Sebastian, who finally got bumped down to being the extra skater, is now 47-0-1-1 with decent ice time. Elite prospects has him at -19 but I usually find those numbers to feel light. At some point you think the puck would fall into the net, but that’s hard when the bottom lines combine for a whopping 3-4 shots a game.

meanwhile we have Williams with an injury requiring Lund to take draws full strength and borgesi to take them on the power play. Granted they each had an assist from a draw so maybe that was a good call

keefe chirping the refs must have inspired Williams to take that unsportsmanlike. Great coaching

Before I gather at the hanging tree, I'd want to have a better understanding of the realities of the recruiting trail. To be more specific, does the fact that NU's NIL bucket isn't as big or deep as others added to the arena uncertainties mean that NU is relegated to taking table scraps? And if the talent just isn't there, as Mr. Rossi has alluded, can we really put the so far disappointing performance entirely on the HC?

That being said, coaches "working the refs" to motivate their players is nothing new, but there are limits. Despite the constant whining from some quarters, the HEA refs are generally pretty good. Not perfect, but it's an imprecise science.

Do we think it’s that likely that some of these middle of the pack teams really have that big a recruiting advantage from NIL? Do maine, providence, and New Hampshire really have an edge on us? BC sure, BU too probably but beyond that I’d think we are competitive with the rest of hockey east but that’s not what’s manifesting on the ice.

Maybe the arena uncertainty doesn’t help, but that wasn’t known when most of the current players got recruited.

I just find it hard to believe such a large percentage of the team playing deeply under what they were billed for is all a skill issue.

Coach, Arena, NIL, are all issues. The drop in talent level has shown in the style they are coached to play. The emphasis is on preventing goals much more than scoring goals. They've tried to ride Defense First. Wiliing to be outshot most games and hoping to capitalize on the chances they can get. The fall off in Offensive ability under Madigan to Keefe is evident.

The bad news is it looks like the new arena is going to be built to attract new students rather than hockey players and fans. 40 might feel claustrophobic

NIL isn't really a problem but more specifically the portal is. My thoughts is that our recruits might arrive a little under ripe and polished for HE in general in contrast to those of the traditional powerhouses of the league and as a result we do a great deal of development in RS, Fresh and Sophomore seasons learning a system gaining expertise and experience. That's the recipe we must have with our program and that's nothing new. It's been that way for the 40 years I have been religiously following the program. Our ingredients are aged while in use while BU, BC and for many years UNH under Dick were and restocked ready to go every October. Good coaches pick good ingredients and recently spots like UMA and PC have been ahead of us in their ability to identify and lure top ready out of the bix ingredients That's what high profile coaches can do. However, the portal has drastically unleveled our ice surface. Yeah we aren't getting looks from the best ingredients but the truth is we never really did aside from the years under Fern and those under Jim late in his tenure. What the portal has done is allowed our ingredients to never reach their full potential and flavor in our pot as a result our current soup kinda sucks collapsing barn or not. Also we must remember the kind of institution the modern NU is in contrast to our competition, our alumni and facility. Hockey and Athletics in general are not viewed as a priority but as only a slight accoutrement to education. Clearly having Jim as AD helps but having a guy like Joe E Aun as President isn't. Until he's gone nothing much changes. NU runs like an Ivy league school which isn't a problem in the CAA but it creates several issues competing in HE.

I haven't noticed anything at the start of the games, but at the next home game, keep an eye on the team as they step onto the ice for the second period. This team looks absolutely lifeless, players coasting to the bench, maybe 2 or 3 guys with a jump in their step. Game 1 against Maine, it was 0-0 after 1. I mentioned this to my seat mate as they came out for period 2, "this game is over". He was more hopeful, but the impact of the intermission "coaching" appeared tangible to me anyway. Voila, 2-0 after 2. Looked even worse skating out for the 3rd, and magically a 4-1 loss. The games i have attended, its been a repeating pattern. Something happening in the locker room is not working........I have no ill will towards any of the coaches, i'm sure great folks, and great hockey folks, but you are correct about the dropoff from JM to JK. No excuse for not making noise with the best goalie in the country back to back seasons.......Wondering if this will be the "plan" until the new "Arena" (i mean "multipurpose whatever" building) opens.

Not to worry, NU will get it right next time around, when they are building the new arena in 2130.........maybe.

Woof. Got my hopes up during the second period only for them to get obliterated in the third. Nice to finally have someone other than the top line or top D score, but overall pretty miserable viewing experience. Looks like a lot more people calling for someone’s head

I don't think it's been calling for someones head as much as its been lamenting that this season has been another significant move in the wrong direction. Pre-season talk had this team considered as at least good enough to host a first round playoff game and maybe challenge for a first round bye. The reality of the situation is so grim that it unavoidably leads to questioning the direction and ability of the person running the program. We are in 10th place. One point ahead of UNH. UNH has two games in hand. UNH has taken 7 of 9 points from us in three head to head games. We have two games left against Merrimack. I've seen every HE team play in person. We won't lose every game. But I don't think there are too many W's out there for us. Last place is a real possibility.

What I said 2 mo ago, 7 to 9 wins maybe. I was a the Thom Lawler arena tonight and it was just ugly hockey. It's not really the coaches fault. They are giving effort but they are simply not as talented as their opponents. When pressure is applied on the player with puck possession in transition they are exposed and are prone to making bad mistakes. They are also slow to react. Look at the recent games on ESPN+ then look at some YouTube games from the 2017 to 2022 years and it's glaring.

And that lone goal was seeing eye, from a distance. With the exception of Lund, NU forwards seem to think the front of the net is radioactive. They just don't go there very often.
