Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

This has to be the most random hoops/hockey doubleheader ever. There has to be a connection somewhere between athletic directors or coaches...who orchestrated this?

It's actually pretty cool.. just wish we had a more exciting hockey product to go along with (what should be).. a nice atmosphere with the hoops. Both gms are on NBC Sports tv as well.. so in that respect.. good for the U.

It gets better. All three NU teams go to East Lansing next year (though I'm not sure all on the same weekend). Actually, it makes some sense from the marketing perspective if you're D1 in both hoops and hockey, assuming one of the networks picks up both ends. The NBCSN promos during the week and today's coverage gave NU some pretty good national exposure.

My ticket to the hockey game say 7:30 but the game is at 7:00, right? When did they change it?

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

Made the spontaneous decision to come down for the game after arriving home last night. For thirty dollars this game better be good...

This may be the only college hockey I see live before the frozen four.

Who is the idiot in the Dog House with the megaphone and how has he not been thrown out of Matthews?

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

Made the Basketball game and the only thing I can say is that must have been the 1st sellout in 20 + years. As far as the game well, considering MSU is ranked #1 and we play in the Colonial which isn't even rally a mid major anymore the fact we lost by 20 seems pretty good. Roby was all smiles! As for the hockey game, it was a win and I will take it. However, MSU might be the worst road team in the nation. So don't get your hopes up. We are at the break without a Hockey East win and that has never happened in the 31 years I have been associated with or been following the tea. Even n the 3 win Cronin season I believe we had won a HE game before the break. That said, I think we are playing pretty well over the last 5 games and could still finish in the middle of the pack. However, that leads me to my next question, when is K Roy coming back and do you think they just figured to get him another weeks rest before the break or is it possible we have seen the last of him? I have heard nothing conclusive since upper body injury report and week to week but I really thought the plan was to get him back for this game today.

I will say that during the early and mid 1980’s the NU basketball teams Led by Perry Moss and Reggie Lewis that made 3 or 4 NCAA tournaments allowed fans to show up with air horns at Matthews and the Cage without any consequence. However, Megaphones are totally uncharted territory and if Jack Parker or Jerry York coached team were in the barn the refs would have had that guy removed.

Good to see another win at home - long time since the last one. Great to see Ruck get his first win - especially against a Big 10 team to make it even more memorable. He has played better than his record suggests. It was nice to see the Huskies actually hold onto a lead in the third period.

All and all a good night except that it does not mean much in the bigger scheme of things. But, it was good to see NU beat Michigan State in hockey after the two basketball losses.

I'm not sure why the megaphone is just now coming up, we've had it for quite a while now. At least this entire year, I honestly don't remember how far into last season it goes. I could see it being new to Scarlet considering BU fan and all, but anyone who has been to a Northeastern game in the last year or so should be well aware that it exists and has existed against Jerry among many others.

That idiot would be me. NU senior and leader of the doghouse. Not thrown out because we have spoken with Matthews event staff and head of security regarding the megaphone and the vuvuzela. There are specific regulations they make me follow in regards to both. I abide, and it's all kosher. I step out of line and it gets shut down. NU has worked with us on that part of the DogHouse, for which I am grateful. Matter of fact they bought the megaphone for me to use, for the student section. And I had it for the BC home game this year and last year. No issues with the megaphone. Only issue this year was a BC parent took issue with us saying 'sucks' a lot. A story for another time. But yeah, York has had no bearing on what we do. I wasn't in charge for Parker, but none of Quinn, Jackson, Lucia, York, Umilr, or Leaman have had anything to say that got directed to me in the time I've been in charge.

There's been a megaphone of sorts as well as other artificial noisemakers going back into the late 2000s from what I remember. I never once heard of Parker having any issue with it. I always wondered how that didn't fall under the NCAA artificial noisemaker ban, but really it's meh. I've never been able to really make out any of the words coming out of it anyways.

Happy for the W but not happy with the attendance (3,142 which, based on the TV screen, must have included the concessionaires and security people). From my perspective, I got more advance hype from the NBCSN promos than I got from NU, which seemed to be all basketball all the time.

Getting back to the game, I thought Ruck was solid and had some difficult saves at key moments. Also nice to see Brendan Collier pick up another point. The kid has been hustling his buns off all season with little to show for it.

The Dog House is an excellent student cheering section on its own without having to resort to one individual yelling out stuff on a megaphone. It might be different if you were using it to lead cheers, as I would think the leader of a student section would be responsible for. Instead, I heard you make comments towards Tom Izzo. That then makes it all about you, and not The Dog House. YMMV obviously. I figured that the folks at NU were trying to counteract you because each time you started to say something, either the band started playing or the canned music started.

i thought it was very cool. Kudos to NU for pulling that off, i was kinda jealous actually.

I can see your point. With turnout as poor as it was I took the chance to be a little more solo in what I did. At a normal game with a better turnout, I use it to rile the troops and get people engaged. Kind of what I tried to do yesterday, and people definitely reacted to what I was saying, just not loud enough to make a difference. The band/house music play whether I speak or not, so I chirped in when I had something to say if I knew I could get in ahead of them as they set up. I'm not allowed to use it during play, when the puck is live. That's the major rule I need to follow. So once the play is blown dead, I can speak with it, usually a 15 second window before music. So I try to take advantage of it then. The Izzo-type comments aren't normal. Usually I chirp the goalie. 6 hours removed from the basketball game and with the weekend hyped as it was, I took the shot. I'd do it again. It's not the normal garb on the megaphone, that's for sure.

Wait, people who wear a Santa outfit instead of apparel about their team to a game might also do other things to try to make it about themselves and not the team whose game they are attending? Color me shocked.

Moving to the game, I thought the dogs controlled play nearly the whole night. MSU had some stretches of control in period 1, not much in 2, and brief ones in 3. Ruck played his finest game imo, couple very good saves especially on the PP. He had one post to post to make a save on a one timer that had me rocking. Also good games from Collier, Gaudette, JStevens, and Cockerill. ZAR obviously gets the GWG but that setup and patience from John Stevens was incredibly pretty. PK did its job today too, discipline has come around for the boys. That hooking call on 7 was atrocious. Sauce had a bad penalty. Otherwise, thought we played a good game. Good note to end 2015 on. Now for some conference wins...

What on earth does him wearing a Santa outfit have to do with anything? So what? It's Christmastime. Nothing wrong with that at all.

NU Husky - that's all well and good that you are just using it during breaks and what not, but honestly, I never thought The Dog House would be so stupid as to use it while play was going on. I just think it makes you look like you want to be that one solo snarky guy with the wise *** comments. I don't know. It just doesn't fit. The few comments I did hear weren't very funny and were pretty annoying. Which is totally opposite of what I know The Dog House to be.

When I was at the basketball game, I told my cousin's husband, the MSU alum and huge Spartan fan that The Dog House was way more interesting, funny, creative and loud at hockey than what we saw at the hoops game. I told him about the "Fat Guy In A Little Suit" chant The Dog House directed at Jason Tapp many moons ago and how it should've been offensive but to this day cracks me up because it was comical. You guys are loud enough sitting right over opposing goalies that you don't need to use a megaphone to say derogatory comments. You become that annoying heckler at a stand up comedy show and to me, that's not the sign of a really good student section. Granted, I know your numbers were limited last night, but personally, I didn't think it warranted the use of a megaphone. I would say that's just my .02 but I've seemed to ramble on more than I intended.
