Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

The head coach certainly seems to matter at Lowell and Providence. At the time of JM's hiring, the 3 schools we're pretty close. Now its obviously night and day. As others have said, it would have been nice to see Greg Cronin coach Johnny Gaudreau and Jon Gillies.
Wait... The Zlax45 would have been lost with no one to complain about the past 3 years! NU fans can be so self serving. ;) :D

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

Cronin, O'Connell and Laplante had the program going in a winning direction. The last 3 years under Cronin, the program had its highest winning percentage in NU history by a mile. They went to 2 hockey east final fours, 2 beanpot near miss finals, a hockey road playoff series win (1st time ever), an NCAA tournament birth and a school record 11 game unbeaten streak. Most importantly, Cronin's players got better every year. Say what you want about his gruff exterior, but he was great player development coach.

On the recruiting front, Cronin had the Arena enhanced dramatically which improved the Staff's ability to recruit better athletes. Look at the players NU had committed the year Cronin left (2011).

Freshmen in 2010-11 Incoming Recuits

Jamie Oleksiak nhl Johnny Gaudreau nhl
Anthony Bitetto nhl Ryan Johansen (yes of Columbus but he bolted to WHL in the Fall prior to Cronin leaving)
Luke Eibler Vinnie Saponari ahl
Brodie Reid ahl Josh Manson nhl
Braden Pimm Garret Haar
Clay Witt Ludwig Karlson ahl
John Gillies soon to be nhl

Look at this list and tell me if NU was not getting a better player than any other year in history. Look at how many left early because they knew they were not getting coached (Bitetto, Eibler, Reid, Oleksiak) and look who never made it on campus (JG, Gillies, Karlson left after 1 year, Manson after 2)

I don't get involved anymore with NU hockey. I agree with the previous posts: NU should be where UML and PC are today and would have been if Roby didn't blow up that staff. That was the biggest fiasco in college hockey history. He mismanaged that texting "crisis" so poorly it stinks of some selfish hidden agenda. And then Roby and Madigan mismanaged the incoming recruiting class. Sebastian actually committed Manson while he was interim coach, while Roby let Gaudreau and Gillies walk as soon as Laplante left.

Remember the big crowds, the excitement of those last 3 years....what would have happened if that staff stayed and Gaudreau, Gillies, Karlson, Manson, Bitetto etc stayed.... Where would NU be now?? Disgraceful

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

P.S

I left one important stat out:

Cronin's last 2 years would have been more successful if Theissen didn't leave early. Remember, the last 2 years were with Rawlings and he was the worst goalie for letting in soft goals. (IE remember the Beanpot Final overtime loss to BC as a small sample). If those two years were blessed with either Theissen or Witt (who carried Madigans team a few years ago with a high save percentage than any of Theissens 3 years), they would have make the NCAA's.

Look no further than the goal tending at PC &UML. You can not win without it. Both programs have been back boned by great goaltending. PC's goalie this year has better stats than Gillie's.

Nice job of summarizing what may have been the nadir of NU hockey. I'd add that we also lost Justin Kovacs, who had a decent 4 year career at Western Michigan and Matthew Gaudreau, who, along with his brother, have inflicted all kinds of damage to the NU hockey team - as recently as last Sunday.
Perhaps the #1 screwee from the HA's mismanglement was Sebastian. He came in as the runner-up for the NU HC job and was offered a role as "Associate Head Coach" by JM, who really wanted to keep him at NU. He was advised by someone to get some experience coaching the pros and then return to college coaching. He spent two years in steamy Houston as an AC for Minnesota's AHL team. Then the parent team moved the franchise to Des Moines and cleaned house. He took his degree back to CA and took a job in the healthcare field that pays more but doesn't involve much skating. The kids really liked him. Things might have been very different if....

And Saturday we will see the HA in all his glory when MSU comes to show us how the game of basketball is played. When I see him preening, I'll try my best not to puke!:(

I hereby nominate Sully75 for Post of the Year, at least so far in this increasingly miserable thread. What he says pretty much sums up the continuing sorry state of our once-credible program. See also Post #277.

True enough. I personally believe Cronin had the program on the edge of greatness until our inept but oh so Politically Correct AD totally overreacted to a texting practice that was in the process of being legalized while the track coach, who handed out illegal inducements, was allowed to retire, presumably with benefits. His handling of these two situations reveals Peter Roby as an effete hypocrite who left a corrupt track program pretty much alone while transforming the hockey program from the brink of national prominence to the depths of national embarrassment. My contempt for this man knows no bounds.

Colonel, you are too modest to nominate your own comments as POY, so I will do it for you. You know what happened - what really happened - and probably are as disgusted as I with the actions and demeanor of the HA. We have to remember that colleges are supposed to be non-profit organizations, not representative of the real world.

BTW, I have a ticket for you for the MSU game, if you decide to come north. Give me a call, yea or nay.

ATTENTION DOGHOUSE. Print out Sully75 analysis and distribute/leave on seats at the next home game. It was well thought out, concise and totally accurate. More people need to know how/why this program has been destroyed by the Bozo and his supporters.

Ha. Good idea. The nice Spanish-speaking cleanup crew will enjoy the extra trash.

While I agree with the post, I think that's the kind of thing to spread around to the people who can talk to the University with their pockets, rather than telling the casual fan students that they're wasting their time even showing up and killing further attendance/morale around the terrible hockey team.

Agree. The beef is the AD and upper echelons of the administration. It only digs the hole deeper if we take our frustrations out on the players.

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

Heading to Matthews tomorrow for hoops and hockey. Is that parking lot off of Columbus going to open, and free as per usual? What is the name of it? Or an address? I gave directions to my cousin who is going but I can't recall the name of the building or lot....I know how to drive there myself but I'm meeting her and her husband. She wants to plug it in the GPS, didn't have any specifics to give her. Thanks in advance!

Camden Lot.. right after the baseball fields on Columbus ave.
Get there early though.. the BB gm is sold out last I checked.. so I'd think a lot of folks would be using the lot for the evening. Cheer (more like pray) for my Huskies since they don't play your team tomorrow.. & Happy Holidays.

To elaborate, entrance to the Camden lot is through the entrance to the Columbus parking garage located directly across from 716 Columbus Ave. (look for the NUPD HQ sign on the front of the bldg. The lot may be full because of the hoops game and I'm not sure if they're going to open the garage to overflow parking (IMO, they should). And yeah, give is a break for once.

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

Thanks guys. I know that lot, I park there when BU plays you guys. My cousin and her husband (who is a Mich St alum) were asking. I just know how to get there, not any names, etc. :) And I don't know what made me think of it but there are three Holiday at Pops shows today. Ugh. I'm going to park at my office and take the T over.

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

This has to be the most random hoops/hockey doubleheader ever. There has to be a connection somewhere between athletic directors or coaches...who orchestrated this?

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

Roby loves basketball and would do anything for them plus Michigan State's AD apparently has some weird fetish for Matthews' history and his teams having one big cross-country slumber party together.

Globe article about it: https://t.co/ppFfnCk3hI
