North Star Cup 1/30-31 - SCSU, UM, BSU, MSU-M: Who is drinking where?

Re: North Star Cup 1/30-31 - SCSU, UM, BSU, MSU-M: Who is drinking where?

Like I said, the article was more a slam on your programs than ours.

I don't know that the Huskies were slammed. They got a nice picture in the article, after all. Specifically, the Mavs were cited as being average, in an anonymous quote from an NHL scout ("You blow a two-goal lead with three minutes in your own barn against an average team, and it's a freshman's fault. It's another example of how they've lowered their standards, and Lucia gets away with it"). Since we swept BSU and got swept by SCSU, I suppose the implication is that the Huskies are above average, and the Beavs are below average.

Being called average is actually about the nicest thing the Twin Cities media has ever said about us, so we're thinking of posting it on a wall. "MSU-M: Recognized in the Twin Cities as Average!"

And yet billionaire and former state senator Glen Taylor, who owns the Strib, City Pages, Timberwolves and Lynx lives and works in Mankato. I'm guessing he thinks Mankato and everything in it is above average. Especially MSUM since he attended there before Harvard.

Bringing the humor unlike a certain set of fans. ;)

Unfortunately 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. games suck for me here. :(

You can say that until you are blue in the face. It doesn't make it true.

You guys are the ones who don't think we are on your level, and you make it known any time you interact with one of us on this board. The expectation is that with the financial advantages and recruiting advantages the Gopher hockey program has over the other in-state teams, is that the Gophers should be better. How is that a slam on our program? How is that making the other in-state programs out to be a joke? It is a reasonable expectation.

Dude, one of the main premises of his article was that our program is in shambles because we aren't consistently beating the snot out of lowly programs (his interpretation) like yours.

Again, which is it. Are the Gophers struggling because they're losing to crappy programs like yours or is the author misguided because your program isn't crappy?

The writer didn't mention SCSU at all in that article. He mentioned the other programs as the ones as being indicative of Gopher hockey being in shambles. Unless it's been edited since its original release, that is.

ETA: the exact quote is this:

Contrast this with Minnesota's supposedly lesser neighbors, schools like Duluth, Mankato, and Nebraska-Omaha, which have come to surpass the Goliath of Dinkytown.

Those teams may get the "leftover" players, those lacking the pedigree to find their way to the West Bank, says Pete Waggoner, a writer for Minnesota Hockey Magazine. "What happens is those players have to be a little more workmanlike, a little more lunch pail. You've got guys that are hungry, guys that are proud to wear that sweater and will do whatever they can to best represent it."

He cites the Gopher's recent record (I'll leave his selective memory issues alone) against in-state opponents. Is St Cloud now out of state?

He cited specific "lesser" teams that are recruiting the U's castoffs. SCSU didn't make that list. See my edit for the exact quote in the article. He's not going to call SCSU a lesser team when we're #2 in the PWR and #5 in the polls.

That would assume he knows what PWR is.

Not going to re-hash the endless list of hyperbole, inaccuracies, and hypocrisies that make that article the epic joke it is. Anyone that wants to legitimately discuss the merits of the article should be laughed at along with the author.

I'm merely pointing out that what is overlooked, but was discussed at some length by the guys on beyond the pond, is just how insulting the article was to the other in-state programs and programs like Union.

The author doesn't appear to understand that we're not living in the 1970's-80's anymore. The college hockey landscape has changed. I don't expect a clown like the author to get that, but I did think better of those who post here (for the most part).

The writer didn't impress me much, but you'd have to think he did at least some basic research before publishing.

Except he did. The author appears to think that a losing record over any stretch versus the Gopher's in-state rivals is unthinkable. And last I checked your program is an in-state rival.

And Goldy brings up a good point. The author likened the loss to Union to the Miracle on Ice, had the Gophers getting swept by Penn State when they blew PSU out 7-1 on that Saturday, etc... Do you honestly think the author understands the PWR system?

Their recent record against in state opponents is laughably bad. No matter what you think of the level of competition

The last two years, no doubt. But is that because our in-state rivals have been good or the Gophers have been bad? Author seems to imply you're incapable of being good, so it means we must be bad. Nevermind the 4 straight conference titles, two Frozen Fours, and best record in hockey the last 4 years.

It should be an article on how good the other schools in the state are and how the Gophers can't be expected to always have their way with the in-state competition. Instead it's a laughable hit piece on Lucia fueled by a disgruntled group of alums.

And the only people still talking about it on any consistent basis are gopher fans.
If it's so bad...then ignore it and let it go.
