North Dakota announces name.

Re: North Dakota announces name.

This UND grad thinks the list is fun, and if the question had crossed my desk, I'd have said "publish."

Further proof that we UND grads form a sophisticated and intellectually gifted community.

And even if we become known as the "bowl of turds," we have enough self esteem to know that is a little harsh.

Dunno. If you think of these institutions as billion dollar organizations (i.e., corporations)...don't know if you'd see these being published by a Fortune 500 company. I just can't imagine seeing a B1G or PAC school with the national exposure tied to one releasing that kind of official list. Guess its just me.

I think there's a difference, 5mn. Few if any F500 companies would agree to associate their name with either Allen Ginsberg or his signature poem, Howl. But Columbia University will not hesitate to do so.

And you might argue the name list and Howl will be similarly remembered as works of art. :)

And a swell fight song goes with it ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVsXseZJPg0 ). A package deal. Can't you just hear the crowds at the Ralph singing this at the end of the second intermission?

I think I like the "North Dakota Gang Fighters" better, since Rebecca Black seems to have already authored up a school song for them with definite hockey undertones. Hell, she even managed a Nazi reference in there, along with some drunkenness as well:

Yeah, the "gang" is down to fight.

I can't wait for UND to have "Party Hat Night" with a special appearance by Barney. :D:D

Re: North Dakota announces name.

And then there were 15.

Blaze
Cavalry
Explorers
Fighting Green
Fighting Hawks
Force
Green Hawks
Nodaks
North Dakota
North Stars
Pride
Roughriders
Spirit
Sundogs
Thunder Hawks

So, y'all will be sticking with just North Dakota then? The only ones on that list I would want are Blaze (for the weed jokes), North Dakota, and NoDaks.

Re: North Dakota announces name.

Wait, let me get this right. UND just went through a multi-year battle with the NCAA and the general public over a nickname which offends some people. As a "resolution" you come right back and put "Cavalry, Explorers, and Roughriders" on your top 15 choices? Really?? Oh, yeah, the parties that objected to Fighting Sioux will be thrilled to see one of those plastered all over the UND campus and teams.

There is either a supreme idiot or someone with HUUUUUGE b@lls steering this committee. In either case they certainly can't grasp why they are in the mess they are in now to allow those names on the list.

I see a zero percent chance any of those makes the final cut.

That is what I thought (per GPL, when I posted about it). I really hope they choose one of those names. That would be awesome.

Re: North Dakota announces name.

I'm not sure why the people who were against the Sioux nickname should get any more say than other people. They don't like some of the nicknames? Tough, there are a bunch of names I don't like either but I don't get veto power. Anyone who is associating Roughriders or Explorers and being upset by these nicknames is looking for an excuse to be upset and complain. They won on the Sioux nickname front, that shouldn't mean they get final say on what UND's new nickname is.

I agree, but it seems to me the more the PC side wins, the more they target. In my opinion they started with great intentions, but they don't know when to stop.

I don't see why anyone thinks those three will draw objection.

First, Roughriders is used by a number of teams/schools/organizations around the country without objection as far as I know. It obviously goes back to Teddy Roosevelt's days fighting the Spanish on San Juan hill.

Explorers is probably as generic a name as you can find, and is stupid in my opinion.

As for Cavalry, if the U.S. Army is still using it without objection, I'm not sure why people will come after UND for using it.

Re: North Dakota announces name.

What's another school that uses Roughriders?

We could finally have a renewal of the Roughriders-Roughriders football game.

Grand Forks Red River High School uses the nickname. That is the only negative I think it has. But most people do not even realize that, so it's not that big of a negative. It is by far the best nickname and I hope it is chosen.

I like the name as well. Ceder Rapids uses it in the USHL too, I look forward to seeing all the Teddy Roosevelt costumes.

The Ironic/ballsy part of these names is the Explorers came to "discover" the land the fore bearers of those objecting to the former name were already living on and then the U.S. Cavalry almost exterminated them.

You are correct, no rational person SHOULD object to those three under normal circumstances. HOWEVER... when you put them into the context of what has happened over the last few years, they are poor choices. They are either being considered to thumb their noses as those that wanted Sioux removed or just plain ignorance of what started this whole mess in the beginning. Heck, why not just go with Fighting Redskins or Battling Blackhawks and go back to the old jersey design? That works in the NFL and NHL so it shouldn't be a problem in college hockey, right?

Roughriders and their conflict with the Spanish, certainly won't be an issue since there are no people of Spanish / Hispanic descent left in the US...
Remember reading in your history books about all those Explorers that had no interactions with Native Americans and how their way of life remained unchanged for hundreds of years...
And certainly the use of Cavalry won't stir up any stories of conflicts with Native Americans on the Great Plains...

Along those lines... Hey, remember when we found that hornets nest and got stung a bunch of times? I don't see any hornets left now it seems pretty quiet. Just to be sure, let's poke it with a nickname stick and make sure they are all gone now and not angry any more...
