NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Great 3-2 win for NMU tonite at Ferris State.... NMU Senior goalie Matthias Dahlstrom played a good game and NMU had some offense.... NMU is now (13-11-6) - Alabama-Huntsville (6-17-4) @ NMU next weekend....

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Good to see a lot of NMU fans at Ewilgleben last night. A real nice come-from-behind victory that keeps us within shouting distance of home ice.

2015-16 NMU Hockey (13-11-6) remaining regular season games before WCHA Playoffs
...

And the 'Cats have a chance to make up some ground. WCHA league games this week: UAH at NMU, MTU at BSU, LSSU at UAA, BGSU at UA_.
Standings:
1. MSU - 24 Games Played, 33 Points, +4 over 2nd. Bye Week
2. BGSU - 22 GP, 29 pts, +1 over 4th. At UA_
    MTU - 22 GP, 29 pts, +1 over 4th. At BSU
4. FSU - 24 GP, 28 pts, +4 over 5th. Bye Week
5. NMU - 22 GP, 24 pts, +4 over 6th. Hosts UAH
6. BSU - 22 GP, 20 pts, +2 over 7th. Hosts MTU
7. LSSU - 22 GP, 18 pts, +2 over 8th. At UAA
8. UAA - 22 GP, 16 pts, +2 over 9th. Hosts LSSU
9. UA_ - 22 GP, 14 pts, +1 over 10th. Hosts BGSU
10. UAH - 22 GP, 13 pts. At NMU

MSU is off. If BGSU and MTU sweep, it's now a three way tie for first headed into the final two weeks.
FSU is off. NMU can tie for fourth with a sweep over UAH. If it shakes out like that, that would kill BSU's chance for home ice, but create one hell of a push for the top five teams. At that point, a couple bad weekends by the top teams could allow Ferris or NMU to steal the MacNaughton. Likely? No, but mathematically possible.

Realistically, NMU is fighting for the final home ice spot with Ferris. It's now a straight up race to the finish line, and Ferris has a slight lead. Ferris ends the season at BGSU and at home vs LSSU. NMU has UAH at home, at LSSU, and Home/Home with MTU. UAH is NOT the free square in bingo that they have been in prior seasons. They're coming off a 2-3-3 in their last eight games (a .438 win percentage), while the 'Cats have put together a nice little run themselves at 5-3-0 (.625 win%). Ferris has a hot streak going, with their only loss since New Years Day coming from the hands of the 'Cats. (5-1-2 .750).

'Cats need to grind and play their game and just win from here on out.

*edit* Just looking at the scenarios, mathematically everyone is still in it. Five teams gunning for the MacNaughton (MSU, BGSU, MTU, FSU, NMU); BSU and LSSU could still finish as high as 2nd. Anchorage mathematically could slip into the final home playoff spot. _airbanks and Huntsville both could be as high as 5th.

Fighting for home ice, a winning record, a hot streak, and complete apathy. Ugh.

Interesting tidbit from the news that NMU is negotiating with Barnes and Noble to run the bookstore is:
Trustees also authorized the NMU administration to proceed with new academic and athletic logos. A special meeting of the board is scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, to vote on the final designs. The process was initiated last summer. NMU contracted with an outside firm, Rickabaugh Graphics, to submit initial ideas for a new graphic identity for general university use and an updated Wildcat logo and lettering for athletics. More than 500 people gave feedback in focus groups composed of students, faculty, staff and alumni. The designs will be refined for the special meeting of the board in April.

It's sad to see the student support so down this year. Even with a winning record and so much potential nobody comes out to support these guys. Where are the puckheads? I don't think we've had a semi-decent student section since Bemidji State.

They want beer. They got beer. They want better concessions. They got better concession. They want a winner. 15 home games only 3 losses.

Considering games are free to students too. Where is everybody? 8,000 students on campus and we can't get 1,000 to come out. As you said they got everything they wanted. I don't get it.

Also please keep Wildcat PA announcer Tim MacIntosh in your thoughts tonight. A friend informed me he went to the hospital today for health issues, thus his absence at the game tonight.

Well...they're not watching basketball. The Cats have a nice product on the ice this year and deserve more.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

This weekend is going to be interesting for the 'Cats. LSSU has been a tough team to beat this year, going 8-12-4 in league play and being involved in physical altercations during their losses lately. When LSSU went to MTU for Winter Carnival, Mel Pearson almost punched former co-worker and LSSU head coach Damon Whitten in the handshake line for the antics his team pulled late in the game. And, judging by Twitter, LSSU once again lost their temper in what turned into a UA_ blowout late in the third.

LSSU is third in the nation in penalty minutes, averaging 14.9 PIM per Game.

'Cats aren't too far behind, averaging 13.5 PIM/gm. BUT! This is consistant with the 'Cats reduction in PIM/gm since the 2010/11 season:

2015-16: NMU 6th in Nation 13.5 Penalty Minutes per Game (currently)
2014-15: NMU 7th 14.1 PIM/G
2013-14: NMU 8th 14.8 PIM/G
2012-13: NMU 7th 15.2 PIM/G
2011-12: NMU 7th 16.4 PIM/G
2010-11: NMU 6th 17.6 PIM/G

Thankfully the 'Cats Penalty Kill ranks 7th in the nation at 87.0% success.
