NMU Offseason 2010

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

He signed with the Blues in July... Not sure if he'll be in Peoria or St. Louis though...

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

Not sure why anyone in their sane mind would say fire Walt!? Look what Walt is working with.....let's be honest...I love Marquette, the U.P. and NMU with all my heart....but stack up the setting against Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth and their new arena, Michigan State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Miami, etc.......how do you compete with that? The only reason NMU can compete is due to Walt. It's not because of the tiny Berry or the 170 inches of snowfall every year in Marquette. Walt is the man with a ton of connections all over.

Please ignore boot_walt... He is a troll, nothing more.

That said, you do bring up some great points about the increasing divide between the "haves" and the "have nots." Hey, I went to NMU during the dark days (early to mid '90's), and thought that the BEC would bring the 'Cats back to national promenance just by being a shiny new rink. Little did I know the amazing rinks that would be built post-BEC (a likely incomplete list): Denver, OSU, Wisco, (all 1999), Miami (2006), Quinnipiac (2007), UNO (2003), NoDak (2001), BU (2005) plus UMD oening in Dec. 2010 and Bemidji State (2010), not to mention the Notre Dame rink opening in 2011... Even 20 years ago the BEC would have been a huge recruiting advantage. Now, it's just keeping up with the Jonse's...

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

There still are some secrets that the BEC has in the lower bowl that fans never see. Dallas Drake invested a good chunk of coin, and the ammenities that NMU players have are better than AHL rinks, and rival a few low end NHL rinks.

Cozy seating for less than 4000, a few bad angles in some spots and a cramped concourse... things fans may complain about but recruits couldn't care less about.

NMU is also able to offer a fringe recruit immediate ice time. Players like Olver, Hanson, and Florek are able to jump right in where they would be struggling for ice time at a Michigan or Michigan State.

I've toured the bowels of the BEC, and it is nice. The problem, however, is that that is the easiest area to upgrade for any program. In other words, you can have a POS rink, and if you have enough space, you can turn it into a first class lounge, weight room and locker room. Not saying that NMU's isn't nice, just that there are other places that have nice player areas too.

Same as Minnesota State, SCSU, UMD, BSU, or even places like Miami, OSU or Notre Dame.

Listen, I don't want to bang on NMU here - I'm just saying that if the BEC would have been built in, say 1990, rather than 1999, it would have been a much bigger advantage than it is now. As an example since I now follow BSU, there were a lot of folks that just assumed that by building the new rink here, recruits would sign up just because of the new rink. Now, while the rink has gotten them in the door with kids they might not have been able to, those kids, again, are the kids that are choosing between BSU and say, SCSU or UNO (rather than deciding between BSU and an AHA school).

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

In strange alumni news (Yeah, I know there's another forum) Darin Olver had 2 goals and an assist to lead his team to victory against Michigan Tech during Tech's European exhibition trip.

I was just coming over here to report this. I was listening to that game, and I heard Olver's name quite a bit. It sounded like he had one heck of a game.

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

I don't recall this being mentioned before, but NMU has a family ticket package for hockey. 2 adults and 3 kids for $40. They might have had that around for last year, but I just saw it.

Also single tickets are $15. What were they last year? $13?

Season tickets at $180 are a darn good deal, though. As is the group rate of $6/ticket for groups of 15 or more.

About da** time!!! I've been pushing for something like that for almost five years.

$15 isn't a bad price to pay for tickets for the product that we see every year (perennial CCHA Championship weekend visitor, flirt with NCAA); even in the economically struggling UP.

Great news to hear. :)

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

That's not a bad deal at all. I just took my wife and kids to the movies and spent almost $65 for tickets and food.

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

The Heisenberg recruit site lists a new verbal commitment for '11-'12.

Gerard Hanson, brother of Gregor. he's a 5' 11" 165 lbs. left winger. Born 7-28-92.

Sorry that's all the info I have.
