NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Well after this week we dropped about 7 in the pairwise, now at 25. Basically these last games will be just for higher playoff seed. Highest possible finish in the CCHA is 6th, that's if Alaska doesn't get anymore points this year (2 games vs MSU). Northern can pass Bowling Green this upcoming weekend if they sweep, that would put them in 8th (lose tie-break to LSSU). Then they need to sweep, or win and tie vs LSSU (if LSSU gets swept by Miami). Realistically they will probably finish 7th-9th. As for the playoffs, the only way they get to a regional is if they can win out the rest of their schedule and get to the Semi-finals, or win the league tournament.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Thought I'd move this over to the season thread:

Northern is having the same scoring issue we had last year but on a wider basis.

Last year we had 2 solid lines that were a threat to score every night, with three players ending up in the top 15 in the CCHA in scoring (Gron 37pts, Florek 36pts and Thurber 30pts). A issue we had last season was that we got no secondary scoring from the 3rd and 4th lines. As of late we have been only getting scoring from Thurber's line (Seckel, Thurber, Higby) and it seems if you shut them down, you have a pretty good chance to beat NMU.

A look at the CCHA stats below will tell you pretty much every thing you need to know why we are at or near the bottom of the league in stats. We have only 5 players in the top 70 players in the league in scoring:

5th Thurber - 29 points
16th Seckel - 22 points
39th Vigier - 17 points
48th Higby - 16 points
65th Macaulay - 14 points

I believe if you want to be a competitive level team in this league you need at least two lines who can score consistently (as we had last season). To be a championship level team in the NCAA, you need your 3rd line to chip in offensively and your 4th line to be tough as nails defensively and bring tons of energy to the play.

Not quite sure how we overhaul this for next year, but we are going to need more players to step up to the plate and produce or it is going to be "Groundhog Day" all over again in 2013-14!

The stats you quote are the overall stats; the CCHA numbers are not any better:

9th
Matt Thruber (SR)
20pts Forward
30th
Reed Seckel (SO)
15pts Forward
36th
Vigier (JR)
14pts Forward
57th
Daugherty (SO)
11pts Forward
75th
Ludwig (JR)
9pts D-man
Macaulay (SR)
9pts D-man
Jones (SO)
9pts D-man/Forward
102nd
Higby (JR)
7pts Forward
112th
Adair (FR)
6pts Forward
125th
Epp (JR)
5pts D-man
Follmer (SR)
5pts D-man
39 goals from our top ten scorers (Follmer has no goals in CCHA play). I don't know what that means, but I don't think it would compare well with other teams. Not sure. Anyone else?

Yeah its gonna be scary, we really need the younger players to take a big leap forward to keep things on track next year.

Nowick , Rose, Adair and Aynsley all appear to all upside skill to become scorers, but losing a playmaker like Thurber could also have a profound effect on the production of Seckel and Higby. I am hoping that Vigier can step up his game and have the sophomore's replace the production lost from Macaully and Thurber.

Following are Overall and [CCHA] stats for NMU freshmen and sophomores to date this season:

Seckel (SO) Pos. F: GP 29, G 12, A 10, P/M 19/49, +/- +6, SOG 82 [GP 22, G 7, A 8, P/M 16/32, +/- +2, SOG 64]
Daugherty (SO) Pos. F: GP 32, G 9, A 5, P/M 13/48, +/- +2, SOG 57 [GP 24, G 6, A 5, P/M 9/40, +/- +1, SOG 49]
Jones (SO) Pos. D/F: GP 32, G 2, A 8, P/M 9/18, +/- -9, SOG 48 [GP 24, G 2, A 7, P/M 7/14, +/- -8, SOG 37]
Baker (SO) Pos. D: GP 30, G 1, A 2, P/M 12/35, +/- -6, SOG 19 [GP 22, G 1, A 0, P/M 8/27 +/- -4, SOG 18]
Vandercook (SO) Pos. F: GP 7, G 1, A 0, P/M 0/0, +/- +3, SOG 10 [GP 6, G 1, A 0, P/M 0/0 +/- +3, SOG 9]
Kesti (SO) Pos. F: GP 16, G 1, A 0, P/M 6/12, +/- -3, SOG 13 [GP 12, G 1, A 0, P/M 5/10 +/- -1, SOG 11]

Adair (FR) Pos. F: GP 28, G 5, A 4, P/M 4/8, +/- -7, SOG 44 [GP 21, G 3, A 3, P/M 1/2, +/- -8, SOG 35]
Nowick (FR) Pos. F: GP 25, G 4, A 3, P/M 4/8, +/- +1, SOG 28 [GP 18, G 3, A 1, P/M 3/6, +/- -1, SOG 22]
Aynsley (FR) Pos. F: GP 29, G 3, A 3, P/M 4/8, +/- E, SOG 28 [GP 22, G 2, A 1, P/M 4/8 +/- -2, SOG 23]
Rose (FR) Pos. F: GP 19, G 0, A 6, P/M 3/6, +/- +2, SOG 15 [GP 12, G 0, A 4, P/M 3/6 +/- +1, SOG 9]
Trenz (FR) Pos. D: GP 26, G 0, A 2, P/M 4/8, +/- +6, SOG 13 [GP 20, G 0, A 2, P/M 4/8 +/- +5, SOG 11]
Lindores (FR) Pos. F: GP 13, G 0, A 1, P/M 1/2, +/- -4, SOG 6 [GP 10, G 0, A 1, P/M 1/2 +/- -2, SOG 6]

On ice +/- for Jones, Baker, and Adair? There doesn't seem to be much production from Sophs and Frosh except Seckel and Daugherty.

Simply thought I'd post these stats for something to consider and talk about. Others of you would know better than me what to think of these numbers going forward.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Just a thought.
Northern may want to throw this weekend's games at BG; this would all but eliminate the possibility that Northern might have to host BG in the first round again this year. That hasn't worked out real well for you guys recently:)

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I'm the host of Muskegon's "Wildcat Night Across the Country," and I'm seriously wondering what we're going to do next year. I've heard Bowling Green is a nice town to travel to, and maybe we can go to Big Rapids, but I'm thinking the days of gathering at a local bar and watching NMU on TV might be a thing of the past.

We'll see what the schedule holds next year...

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I just saw BG posted their WCHA schedule and they are not hosting NMU...just a series in Marquette.

Interesting that they're playing the two other UP teams home and away, but not NMU. And only playing the closest team to them, Ferris, at Ferris.

Home and Away: UAA, Mankato, LSSU, UAH, MTU

Home: UAf, BSU

Away: FSU, NMU

EDIT: Here's the link should anyone be interested: BGSU WCHA Schedule

Before Alabama was accepted into the WCHA, the Lakers were not scheduled to play in Marquette. I wonder if that has changed with Alabama being accepted to the conference.

Onei must remember that this years schedule is a bit of a crapshoot. Schedules, including non-conference games were already completed. That left very little flexibility. As far as NMU getting UAF, UAH and UAA on the road, every team will do it in the schedule rotation.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Hopefully other teams release their WCHA schedules soon like Bowling Green just did. I'm hoping NMU and LSSU will play four times next season.

They won't release their schedule or they won't play four times?

Won't play four times next year. Once the regular schedule rotation begins, teams will play their travel partner 4x (UAA-UAF, Bemidji-MinnSt, NMU-Tech, LSSU-Ferris, BG-UAH) and two other pairs 4x. So NMU & LSSU will meet four times twice every four years.

So I'm guessing NMU/LSSU will be just in the Sault in 2013-14, then both in 2014-15, then just Marquette in 2015-16 and then both again in 2016-17.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

That series should be a home and home. Every year.

Don't hold your breath for that to happen. It would only work if teams from two OTHER scheduling 'pairs' can do it the same way, or you'll end up with 13 games at home and 15 away (or visa-versa).
