NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

This is true but for god sakes man, 7 of your 9 titles came before they even started playing the Super Bowl, when there was what, 9 teams in all of division 1 hockey? No argument on the continued success of your program since then but pump the brakes on tooting your own horn about winning a bunch of titles playing with straight blade sticks

Dude, the appendage measuring comments started from your peanut gallery. Doesn't matter when they were won, they still count. Between our programs, we have the latest one, so I wouldn't go there, considering your program wasn't even D2 worthy most of the last 17 seasons.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I gotta comment here on the 2012-13 Wildcat squad. I was at the NMU-U-M game last night and witnessed a Wildcat team that went through the motions. I was sitting with a half dozen Wildcat fans and all we could do was shake our heads at the apathy. Where did the fire go? Other than Seckel, it seemed this team packed it in a long time ago. This team needs a serious turnover of forwards as they were sloppy at best, leading to most of Michigan's goals. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. Cut some kids loose.

As a fan who loves this program more than any other sports team, it was painful to watch a very average to decent Wolverine club make our Wildcats look like a bunch of mites. Come on Cats, get that **** fire back in your bellies and fight!

Something has to change other than going to the WCHA. Last night was very embarrassing. Talk about feeling shame. This program needs some major fire. Any ideas? Any kids coming in that can help out on offense? The forwards just don't have it.

I don't want to sound negative, but seeing that club in person several times this year brought sadness to me more than anything....in terms of output and fire. Out shot 50-20 is wrong. NMU has a fantastic program and legacy.

Watched both games and I have to agree with you on the lack of fire and talent problems at forward. This team has had a season long issue with scoring with the Seckel-Thurber-Higby being the only consistent threat week in and week out. With Thurber gone this weekend, Seckel and Higby had maybe two decent scoring chances the whole weekend and looked much like our other lines.

We need to start recruiting more skill players to NMU so that we can be 2 or three lines deep with players who can score and not rely on just a few players.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I was at both games this weekend, and it was humbling to say the least. I always dislike losing to M. But, despite M's record in the CCHA they were the top scoring offense overall and 2nd behind ND in the conference. M is just now, over the last few weeks, settling into their season--they're playing good at both ends and Racine seems fairly confident in goal after playing musical chairs with Rutledge and Janecyk all season.

NMU on the other hand has struggled to find itself nearly all season in all categories. I don't want to get into who's playing with fire in their belly or not--I'd say most of the guys, with the exception of one or two on any given night, play tough, fast and furious nearly every time they are on the ice. We've beat some good teams this year; so, at times, something must have been going right.

What I was most disappointed with this season was our defense (it was kind of a given we'd be weak offensively) and not just our defensive core, but our fore-check and back-check from the forwards. The defensive breakdown is what caused so many shots and so much traffic in front of Coreau this season. I think on Saturday against the M we simply saw the complete meltdown of our overall defense with those 50 shots and 6 goals. Friday night, except for the 1st period, could have been NMUs game, but alas...

I am hopeful for next season. We're only losing 5 guys: 2 D-men, and 3 forwards. I hope Coreau stays, but I guess that's probably doubtful.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I think Northern Hockey is in trouble. This new conference will re-enforce an "apathetic" fan base to a "I really don't care" fan base. Way too many empty seats. How long will Northern be willing to fund hockey as a non-revenue sport?

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

When did hockey become a non-revenue program? Last I checked, hockey drove the rest of the athletic department contrary to the old AD's attempts to spread out the budgets.

Admittedly, last time I saw the numbers was a few years ago.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I think though it will be pretty exciting having a race with Tech again and our old pal Shick, Coach Shyiak and the Seawolves.

I'm waiting for the NMU AD to step up as well. I hear he is almost invisible in the PEIF.

NMU was only 5-5 against its soon to be league members this season with 7 home games and 3 road games.

Actually, we went 5-8-1.

vs Alaska - 1-0-1
vs MTU - 1-0-0
at LSSU - 0-2-0
at Alaska - 0-2-0
vs Ferris - 1-1-0
at MTU - 0-1-0
at BGSU - 1-1-0
vs LSSU - 1-1-0

4-2-1 at home (seven games)
1-6-0 on the road (seven games)

And Shyiak may not make be at the helm of UAA for the start of the new WCHA...

Define "visible." What does he need to do to "step up?"

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Dave he (AD) needs to get involved with the Blue Line Club Members, he doesn't even show up in the Wildcat Room, to introduce him self to any of the members. The only ones he seems to socialize with is the NMU staff! He (Forest) is not as social as Ken Godfry as Ken always walked around the building between periods. The President is another one that could use some PR skills too! Dr. Wong was a special person that was alway walking around between periods too! So YES Dave he does need to step it up!!!!!!!! I have been a Blue Line Club Member for the last Eighteen years and have seen better!!!!!!!!!!

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Well, I should bite my tongue. Looks like the AD has some brass. Not re-signing the b-ball coach was a strong move.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I'm sure most of you already know this, but I thought I'd post the link to the miningjournal.net article anyway:

Coreau-ready-to-move-on--turn-pro

Looks like it's 99.999% sure we won't have Coreau in net next year.

Best of luck to him.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I think the 'Cats will be okay. Goaltending never seems to be the issue, and we always seem to mold the most pedestrian goalie into a stats leader (Sort of the Wings method with Osgood and now Howard).

I hope the lack of departing forwards and defensemen means that we can go into next season without a learning curve.

Any chance Thurber could claim hardship against Mike Eaves and get another year (ala Andy Contois and Crazy Frank Anzalone)? Haha.

I'm excited for the move to the WCHA.

TSN's Bob MacKenzie has tweeted that Jr. Free Agent Jared Coreau will be in Detroit on Tuesday to eventually sign with the Red Wings. Terms to be finalized. Chris Osgood was at Yost two weeks ago scouting Coreau.

The article says he might actually "start his career in Detroit" (interesting) then join the Griffins later.

Would like to see him play in GR.

Big news out of MQT. Dave Danis has been let go by 100.3 The Point. I'm sure he can clarify my summary of his Facebook posts, but he has been asked to come back as hockey play-by-play on a part time basis for hockey season if he can / wants to.

I hope he returns. He does a solid job. I don't want another Ashley Sharge fiasco.

I like Dave's knowledge of NMU hockey and passion for it.

Very sorry to hear this. Dave is a pure professional when it comes to hockey. I'm sure he will land on his feet. Good luck Dave.
