NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Win and a Tie (CCHA win) this weekend against a strong Alaska team. Good showing from the boys. This will help NMU out in the CCHA race a bit. I dont see this doing anything Nationally though. Good jobs CATS.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Not the prettiest of wins but a win. I feel like NMU needs to work on getting the puck to the net big time. They need to be putting up twice the shots on goal they are currently.

Any idea on the mystery suspension Walt imposed?
There's no mystery to the suspension. A player violated a team rule. The player was suspended. The suspension will last until the coach decides it is over.

Wow Dave. Sounding a lot like a politician there. It also sounds like you know exactly what happened. I understand what is already known. However, there is little tranparency to what happened so I am just curious as to how long it will last. It is rare that a player is suspended and the fans do not know why or for how long. I respect the team and Walt. I am not asking for particulars... just time length as he is a KEY player and his absence has a significant impact on the team. I have never been one for gossip or airing other peoples laundry.

Very rare is it that you get a reason, other than "violation of team rules," from any college team. ( http://isearch.avg.com/search?cid={905B1B31-2BAA-495D-9D61-2A07D6222BF3}&mid=f4313412991e47d185b0d14acce4e9e6-0aa1c3f00fb509cf9df6c7597d34d68a32db831c&lang=en&ds=AVG&pr=fr&d=2011-09-25%2010:00:28&v=11.1.0.12&sap=dsp&q=suspended+for+violation+of+team+rule ) The bike situation involved legal charges which were of public record, but privacy rules don't allow too much disclosure. As far as the length, it will be until the coach decides he has atoned for his acts. If you recall, last year at Michigan, D-man John Merrill was suspended at the start of the year for 10 or 12 games. The coach decided to extend that suspension, so giving a g ame number that could change is fruitless. It is exactly as the coach has descri bed it in the media, until he decides the player will be back.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

What has happened to the NMU fanbase on USCHO? I know you guys usually do a weekly matchup thread but come on folks, how does your season thread only have 2 pages when it's approaching Thanksgiving?? I traditionally enjoyed reading your teams thread second only to my Lakers thread, here's hoping the chatter picks up!

I lurk hardcore...but listen to every game and read just about anything written by Wellens in the MJ or Danis on his blog.

I think facebook has something to do with the downturn in postings as well. Just my $.02.

To Aparch; have you ever been thinking, what has happened to NMU-players. No succes in hockey, but succes in studies. What about both.
I`m thinking seasons after Tuomas Tarkki. Tuomas have been good after NMU years and doing well even today both in hockey and in his private life.
After Russian year, his playing now in JYP-hockey team in Finish Elite Liga. The question is, what about the other guyis in that time- kaikki Ok. in Finnish

Looking at just a few players during Tarkki's last season...

Darin Olver has spent the last five seasons in Germany. Doing very well over there too.

Andrew Contois went through the ECHL and then overseas. Had a great season in Denmark last year. Not sure what hes doing this year.

Mike Santorelli plays for the Florida Panthers. In 10-11 he had 20 goals in 82 games. Last year he had 9 in 60.

Dirk Southern had a few good years in the ECHL and has been in Europe the last two.

Nathan Oystrick dominated in the AHL and then had a few years in the NHL. He is in Prague this season.

Kevin Gardner had a couple years in the ECHL and then 5 great years in Europe. He married a Marquette girl. Lost track of him over the years.

A
What about 2 3rd period comeback wins against Wisconsin. NMU led in neither game against Notre Dame, and closed the gap in the third period, scoring the only goal of the period n the Saturday night game, to cut the lead to 3-2. Last night was the only time NMU has lost a 3rd period lead this season. Try again.

Ok davyd, here's another try for ya. In the 3rd Period this season, NMU has been outscored 15 to 9 (if you exclude the Wisconsin series, 14-4!). I don't know about you, but that looks like a problem to me. The 3rd has cost the 'Cats too many games so far this year. If NMU is entertaining any remaining notions of postseason success, they are going to have to rid themselves of their complacency late in games.

I don't know where you get your numbers, but it's now 18-9. And the third period has become a problem. But how many games have the Cats lost in the third period? They have not lost a game that they led going into the third and are 1-2 in games tied entering the third.

According to the CCHA, didnt they technically lose the game that went to shots against UofM? They led going into the third on that one.

It's officially a tie as far as the NCAA is concerned. I guess it depends on whose glasses your looking through, the CCHA or the NCAA.

No y they didn't technically lose it, not the one against Miami. It goes as a tie in the CCHA. Michigan gets an additional point for winning the shootout. CCHA Standings have four columns. Wins-Losses-Ties-Shootout Wins. The final score was 2-2. That's true for both the CCCHA and NCAA.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I notice that Coreau was the third star last night; he really deserves the first star--doing so much more work than Slubowski. Jared kept NMU in the game--he made many saves that were shot through traffic. I couldn't believe he was able to see them (maybe he didn't). The way that WMU controlled much of the offensive side of the game, I was amazed that NMU was still very close to tying that game up late in the 3rd period--credit Coreau for that.

I was wondering if anyone else watched the game last night and could comment on what they thought of Ludwig's hit and game misconduct. From what I saw it was a fierce open-ice hit to save a breakaway that did not seem to be directly at the head--even though I guess the WMU player's helmet came off (I don't remember that). I only saw the hit live, so I haven't seen any replay. Did it really warrant a 5 and a game misconduct? The referees this year seem to not be letting the players play and hit and take hits. I don't know.

Tuesday is Tech at the BEC. NMU (5-8-3) and MTU (4-7-1) have similar records thus far this season and similar Goals and GA stats (NMU 36:47) (MTU 38:47). Any other similarities, differences?

Can anything be done about our fair-to-middling offense the rest of the season?

My 3 Stars: (3) Elias WMU (2) Slubowski WMU (1) Coreau NMU. But you can understand the goalie with the shutout getting first star in his home rink. We get a little 3 star home cooking at ours,

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Tech has yet to play on the big sheet this year. Slight edge to NMU on Tuesday, I'm guessing, especially since your goaltending appears to be set, whereas ours is all over the place.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

This season is collapsing into a travesty! It's time to show Walt the door and restore NMU to the great hockey program it used to be!

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

It's not Walt's fault Thurber acted like a **** punk. It's not Walt's fault his kids aren't putting the puck in the net. The Cats gotta step it up and want it more. They're adults and should show a hellof a lot more pride in being a Wildcat and representing all the great players who came before them!
