NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Didn't get a chance to watch or listen to the game last night, but what happened? Did the Cats get over-confident from last weekend? From the stats it looked like the offense couldn't generate anything, and defense wasn't quite there. Hopefully this game was a wake up call, and they can bounce back tonight and get the split! Go Cats!!!

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Big win for the Cats on Saturday night! After seeing 2 weekends of games I think we can hang in there with the rest of the CCHA. After watching Saturday's game I also think I would leave Follmer up front as he bring some size to the forward line. I also like the way Thurber plays, nothing super fancy, but he always makes the right play and makes the other players around him better. If the stats are correct, we have scored 9 goals this season and Thurber has been on the ice for 7 of them.

Should be a good series this weekend, will be interesting to see how we play back on the big ice sheet in Marquette.

Well, the 'cats were swept at home. In the CCHA, ND had two wins, everyone else managed splits, OSU & BGSU tied Saturday night. So, NMU is the only team without any points after the first weekend.

For those of you who saw Saturday's game, were there any highlights or strengths that the 'cats displayed worth mentioning? Sounds like the freshman Adair and Aynsley had a good night. Walt said the quality of play was high. Sounds like we're still trying to find our line sets and who plays well with each other. MiningJournal.net Video Report

Next weekend it's UOM. They're coming off a split with Miami.

Go 'Cats!

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I'm making the 400-mile drive from Bemidji to Marquette this weekend. I have tickets for Friday's hockey game, then FB Saturday afternoon. This will be my first NMU home hockey game. The closest thing to early NMU hockey I saw was the Marquette Iron Rangers in the Palestra (sp?). I did see the Cats last year in Bemidji and sported my NMU letter jacket (70-71 version, hey, I may wear it Friday if that's not too kooky) and my green BSU sweatshirt underneath.

Will also be visiting an NMU college basketball teammate from '72 who I haven't seen in 40 years so should be a great weekend.

Go Cats!

Welcome back home :)

Should be a good crowd given that it's Michigan... It'll be a fun game, trust me... You'll get the full NMU experience on this weekend :D

As RaceBoarder said, you should have a great experience. Wish I'd taken this weekend off and driven up for what will probably be UoM's last weekend in Marquette for years to come--who knows. I was up in Marquette for the Lake State series a couple of years ago for the first time in about 16 years and had a great time. Enjoy your trip, stay, events and GO 'CATS!

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Watched both games online this weekend. I was throwing stuff at the monitor on Friday night when the M tied it up. On Saturday I sat on my hands and hoped for a win.

Macaulay's goal on Saturday was sweet and Reed Seckel is one of the most determined players I've seen in a while.

Here's the miningjournal.net article and video after Saturday's game: Northern Michigan holds off Michigan rally in third period for first CCHA win

On to Oxford...anyone know much about Miami this year?

Go 'Cats!

Other than them having a CCHA and National rookie of the month and another as a CCHA player of the month, and splitting with Michigan and Ferris? Not really. They lost a few key players to early departures this summer, so the 'Cats are going to have to avoid Goon Rico's game plan.

I see Miami as a Wisconsin type opponent: lots of turmoil that is still settling, and the 'Cats need to take advantage and get a pair of wins.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Good weekend for the Cats, would've been nice to see a sweep, but 4 points is good against a strong Michigan team.

Looking forward to Miami, they have a very strong team. I Think Northern can manage a split or even a sweep. Miami split with Ferris and Michigan.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Great rebound win from the Cats this weekend! Hope the team learned a lesson about staying out of the box from the Friday game.

I also hope Walt continues to use the Saturday night combo on the 4th line. They held their own and provided a physical presence. I thought Kesti played his best game of the season.

The other guy I really thought played well was Thurber. He just seems to make scoring opportunities for everyone who plays with him.

Determined is an excellent word to describe Reed, I've grown up with the kid and he's one of my best friends, he's the type of guy every coach wishes he had a roster full of......now If only he didn't decide to play for the chief rival of my alma mater......lol

I'm a grad student at Miami now, so I always look forward to the 'Cats coming into town. I'll be the goofball in the student section this weekend wearing NMU stuff

From the few games I've attended, Miami is very young, no standout goaltender from what I can tell. As usual however, Miami is big, fast, and very talented. Just like last year, Miami is still learning to play together as a team, but should easily be a top contender by the end of the season. Northern will have to keep defensive breakdowns to a minimum in Oxford, because Miami will make you pay big time.

It's too early to make any real determinations about goaltending, but if we're going to, it's pretty hard to argue that McKay was anything but exemplary in both his starts this season (24/24, 36/37).

At any rate, there's no word on if McKay is back from injury yet, so I'm just assuming we'll see Williams twice this weekend. He's been fairly erratic thus far, which doesn't really come as a suprise, most fans expected McKay to emerge as the clear #1 rather quickly. Even if Rico did maintain a rotation.

What has happened to the NMU fanbase on USCHO? I know you guys usually do a weekly matchup thread but come on folks, how does your season thread only have 2 pages when it's approaching Thanksgiving?? I traditionally enjoyed reading your teams thread second only to my Lakers thread, here's hoping the chatter picks up!

Honestly, I'm part of it and I'm wondering the same thing.... I know a lot of posters have "grown up" and gotten on with their lives post-college.... They all still support the Cats and all... The fanbase is still out there... They just don't post on USCHO much anymore... Also doesn't seem to be a "new generation" coming onto USCHO either... Such is life I guess...

Maybe message boards are just old and unpopular now  Several that I post on seem to have fallen off in the past 2-3 years... Not just here on USCHO, but also boards related to Snowboarding, Fishing/Hunting, and Auto Racing where I'm a regular...

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I am glad to see the Cats still in the top 20 rankings after a tough weekend against Miami. I think the Cats number 1 enemy right now is giving up stupid penalties that allow their opponent to capitalize. Saturday night is a prime example. Keep the penalties down.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Looking forward to seeing the Cats and the Bucs at Value City/Schottenstein on Friday.

1) Will the back-to-back road trips of 11+ hours affect the Cats this weekend?
2) Will NMU be p***ed enough about last week's results to take it out on OSU?
3) Will any fans actually show up at the game? (If not, perhaps they could move next door to the intimate co9nfines of the OSU Ice Rink.)

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

This was the first great college hockey team that I knew, the 1979-1980 team:

19537.JPG

Short article at CCHA.com "Celebrate the Legacy Team of the Week"

Some pretty good players were on that team and a few went on to have successful NHL careers: 79-80 roster

As for this weekend against tOSU, I hope the 'Cats fare better than last years trip to Columbus when they were swept and the team was in the midst of Bicycle-gate.

Both tOSU and NMU are coming off a loss and a tie last weekend, so this could be a closely contested series in order to gain some points and avoid the basement in the CCHA.

Go 'Cats!

Some of us have grown older and don't have the time to post as we once did. And there doesn't seem to be "new recruits" coming aboard from NMU to replace our posts.

I also hope that the chatter picks up a bit. It's good to hear from and keep in touch with Wildcat fans.
